  • 100/200/300 Dora-Hammer Style – from Jose10k

A great way to start your weekend off right: a beatdown at the A1C. Where else can you have the average age of participation over 55, gasous emissions from Hammer that could be weaponized and used to torture terriorists?
The Thang: A hammer style dora on the side of the parking garage. Partner one runs a lap, while partner 2 completes the exercises. 100/200/300 big boys, squats, merkins. 2 calf raises each step back to the the top for some 4 corners. 7 reps at each corner, then 14, 21, and finish with 28. Merkins, Squats, Big boys, lbcs. Hammer pushed me to finish it right at 6, COT, prayers for JV and my family. Run to remember next Saturday, Russo’s Q tomorrow. Thanks for letting me lead Brothers. • Swamp Crawlin’ – from Goose

YHC knew that today would be tough after yesterday’s push with Cardinal to complete the Yankee-Jerf-Lee Challenge at The Stage in time to get him to say Mass without mud on his face. And, we also needed some warmup for Week 0 of the Iron Pax Challenge to be completed on Thursday morning. So, with the truck loaded with coupons, YHC moved slowly and trepidatiously (behind the usual creeping vehicles on Main Project Rd.) to Schriever Park. Simultaneously, Goats in the Machine was traveling to The Stage with dreams of sweaty brotherhood dancing in his poorly mistaken head.
Due to the slow traffic, YHC arrived exactly at 6:00 to meet Enron and do a poor job of unloading the truck, which required a second trip through the mire to get the bug spray and the coupons. That’s when Elmer’s pulled in hot, saying something about slow cars and a snotty baby. So, warmup commenced at 6:06, which ended up being a merciful gift of providence since six more minutes may have been the death of us.

Warmup: the usual routine, but added a never-before-seen-in-Thibodaux exercise that was a favorite on the Northshore–Good Mornings: hands behind the head, stand up straight, and bend over at the waist as far as possible before coming back up again. Fires up the lower back muscles to get them warm and flexible, for they would be much abused today.

Thang 1: Swamp Crawlin’ and Coupon Ploppin’
Partner Dora of the following exercises: 100 coupon thrusters while partner bear crawled the length of the fence (at the back of the tennis courts, near the playground, in the mud) and ran back; 200 coupon curls while partner bunny hopped through the mud and ran back; and 300 coupon rows while partner nurred through mud and back. Gloves and socks were muddy, and the coupons made a satisfying plop as partners flapjacked.
The thrusters were to prepare for Thursday morning’s ridiculousness (some pre-trauma trauma), and the curls were to keep the Jerf-Lee routine strong, though Enron seems to remain completely unfazed by any and all coupon curls. Even Elmer’s, with his beefy carpenter arms, had to bow to the finance wizard’s steely biceps.
At some point during this routine, Goats drove by honking wildly on his way to Mr. Ronnie’s (I’m assuming) after showing up to a dark and empty Stage at 6:05. (Cardinal and Yankee Joe were able to respond quickly to his GroupMe plea for help–well done, fellas.)

    Thang 2: Thunder-dome
With very little felt energy left in the tank after the Dora (thrusters are truly the worst), YHC knew the mental battle was just getting started. Anker was activated and AC/DC echoed through the mini-Thunderdome with pounding rhythm of “Thunderstruck”. PAX instinctively started Imperial Walkers and dropped for burpees at every “Thunder”. They didn’t even have to be told–they felt it. We began to feel a number of other things as the song continued, such as the desire to tell Ozzy to shove it and just end the song already, and ideas for how to travel back in time and remove Imperial Walkers from the Exicon.

Slow moseyed back to the flag for some Mary and to get mud on the parts of us that weren’t muddy yet. COT and Elmer’s prayed us out.

It’s been awesome to see so much engagement and drive moving into September with the Yankee-Jerf-Lee and the Iron Pax Challenge, not to mention potential resurrection from Goats, Gordon, and the newly minted Toe Loop. Looking forward to some serious growth!

    SYITG,
    Goose

  • Duck Duck Goose! – from Russo

77 degrees to start this morning, which has YHC longing for the days when he is chastised for wearing short sleeves in 24 degree weather. Whatever God has been baking is done.

I’ve got Q on Saturday for a cakewalk, and there’s a very good possibility there will be a breakout IPC group if masochism is more your speed.

Special intention for JV and his family.

  • Less Than or Equal to One Man Left Behind – from Tinkles

  • The Incredible Weight of Zero* – from Steve

Week 0. Meaningless. Inconsequential. Akin to a preseason Saints game with Ian Book in for all four quarters. A mere hors d’oevres for the real deal, which starts next week. A warm up, really.

I’m sure the seven pax that posted – most of them blithely unaware of what was to go down this morning (despite the leak on slack) – would agree with this. I am sure they would not have preferred to do the simple four corners mosey down to the lakefront and back that YHC had originally planned. I mean, these Greenwood guys gently ramp up the Iron Pax challenges each week anyway, right?

Ugggghhh… let’s hope not. The Fat Coe Sandwich, as this beatdown is called, is a brutal joke for a week zero beatdown. It consisted of:

    – 20x Squat Thrusters w/ coupon, 20x merkins. Rinse and repeat 5x.

    – Bear crawl 100 feet, burpee broad jump back (3x burpees, 5x jumps). Rinse and repeat 3x.

    – 20x Squat Thrusters w/ coupon, 20x merkins. Rinse and repeat 5x.

Woof. That’s rough. For a Monday morning, that’s real rough. And for a Monday morning where you ran a few miles from your home to the Marsh, well, that’s just plain mean. (As always, t-claps to Hammer and Waterpik.)

Luckily we had Bacchus, a Southshore transplant that Quarterpipe EH’d the night before, post and inspire us with his incredible athleticism. For a guy that hadn’t posted in two years (I believe?), this guy was unbelievable. I mean, if I hadn’t proctored the event myself, I probably wouldn’t have believed it.

To see him go toe to toe with Bushwacker, the man whose bear crawl is as fast as my running, was just incredible. While Bush still had the edge on the crawls, Bacchus’ broad jumps were something to behold. Eventually he just outpaced us all, by a long shot. And it wasn’t just the endurance and speed, he was slinging those cinderblocks like they were nothing. It’s like Grundy, Tank, and Cowbell somehow had an incredibly tall child together.

YHC cannot recall the times – I know Bacchus was in the 18 min range (almost 19 mins) and Bush was in the 21 min range, and everyone else was 25 mins and beyond.

Incredible job, everyone. To get out there on a Monday morning and complete this challenge – or even attempt it – is incredibly inspiring. T-claps to Akbar, who prodded me to run with this instead of something easy. And t-claps to Bacchus, of course, for his first Northshore post and a memorable one at that.

And hey, as it sounds like Week Zero could ultimately provide an edge in the case of a tie breaker, well, this month’s contest – on the Northshore at least – could conceivably already be in the books.
