  • Gimme the Usual – from Rudy

Gathering around the flag early. RevSox emerges from the gloom and emits a quite audible groan when he learns YHC is the Q. Thanks for that vote of confidence! The 8 PAX are muttering about how the esteemed Site Q seems to never appear anymore. But lo-and-behold, just as YHC starts the disclaimer, Mahatma appears! Great to see you brother!

Today for the disclaimer: YHC has been thinking about and praying for his sister lately. She and her daughter are having a very challenging summer. So today, YHC asked all of the PAX to think of someone they know who is struggling – physically, emotionally, mentally, whatever. Offer the workout for them today. Offer our pains and struggles in the gloom as a way of trying to relieve their struggles. And use thoughts of their struggles to keep pushing us forward. So with a silent prayer for my sister – we were off to the rocks.

Grab a rock, and lets head to the field. (The Tree field, not the football field, as Hand Grenada needed some clarifications).

Circle up. Because Hand Grenada asked, we’ll start with 2 burpees OYO. Go. OK, now the warm up. Usual stuff – SSH, IC, Peter Parkers. Then some Glute Bridges – pinch some diamonds and really really activate them glutes.

Then line up. Its the Rudy Special. Or Rudy Standard. Or “No, not this again.” Or “Rudy is just a one-trick pony”. Whatever.

11s. Burpees and Big Boy Situps. When you pass the rock (left in the middle): 10 Overhead Presses in one direction, 10 curls in the other. Go.

War Eagle was off to the races! Whoever he was praying for clearly motivated him to push push push. Needed to throw a few more reps his way just to keep him going while the rest of the PAX finished.

Next Up: Groups of 3 in the parking lot. PAX1: Start LBC/LBT. PAX2: Start Rows. PAX3: Sprint to the gym door and back. Then rotate. And keep rotating till everyone got 2 of each set in. Pai Gow helpfully pointed out that the Row -> Sprint transition helped emphasize good form for the rows, or your back would really feel it in the sprint. Wise man!

Rifle carry the rock back to the pile, and mosey back to the flag. YHC had the privilege of having to help a lumbering Triple Shift. When YHC attempted to pick up that rock, he better understood just why TS was lumbering…. That rock was a wee bit heavier than YHC’s rock.

At the flag, we closed with COT and prayers – specifically remembering again those that we offered the workout for. Thanks for letting me lead!

  • Not a Dry Shoe in Sight – from Fast Tax

Only 4 pax braved the sloppy Rock City soup to see what new creative adventures Fast Tax had put together.

After disclaimer, we headed to the rock pile.
    Warmups consisted of:
    o Abe Vigodas X 10 IC
    o Happy Jacks X 15 IC
o Bat Wings FAC, RAC, SC, OH, MNC X 20 IC

We grabbed our rocks and headed to the field for the first routine, Field of Dreams.
Partner Sequence OYO consisted of: PAX 1 begins to traverse the field as follows: lunge with rock to 25yd line, drop rock, bear-crawl to 75 yd. line, lunge remaining 25 yds. 50 BBS at goal line, repeat back. PAX 2 does 15 rows, 15 curls, and 15 O/H press then runs to switch with PAX 1 who runs back and does the rows, curls, etc. Cycle repeats until they are back at the starting point.

After Field of Dreams, it was time to get our rocks off (or up). Holding wife pleaser position with rocks on the ground past their head, sequence is IC:
As YHC called “up,” triceps lift to overhead and back down. 3 sets of 10 reps.

Next was Head, Shoulders, Knees, & Toes: a 10 count arm and shoulder workout with rock, 20 reps IC.

Following 2 cycles of an Indian Crabwalk, the festivities on the field culminated with Captain Thor, a 1:4 ratio of BBS to American Hammer, performed OYO, increasing by 1:4 each rep (i.e. ending with 10 BBS and 40 Amer Hammer). Then it was back to the rock pile and a quick mosey to the flag for COT.

    Coffeteria at PJs followed.

    Thanks for the fellowship!

We went double or nothing on the last 4 and ran up a total of 80 8CBBs. Ran out of time so those 80 are for homework.
Back to the flagless gathering spot

COT: Announcements: Frac’s five year manniversary is tomorrow at Okwata. Show up for the celebratory burpees and levee work. Q-School with Professor Catfish is this Saturday at City Park. Encourage everyone, especially recent FNGs to come. City Park Clean-up after the workout. Prayers for Ryan and Rob. Gratitude for our health and F3.

NMM: It seemed especially sticky out there today. Make sure you are hydrating constantly. If you are working out everyday, a gallon of water should probably be your goal. T-claps to War Eagle and Papa for the hard charge on the last two 400s, although there was grumbling that they were sand baggin’ on the first two. Where was Catfish when I needed him? No one was with me on the Bonnie Blairs, apparently not a crowd favorite. Our B-Ball skills need work. 1-7 from the line this morning. T-claps to War Eagle for the make. Found out he was the Middle School MVP in Podunk, AL.
It was humid today and we are looking at hot, humid workouts for the next 4 months. The heat and humidity in New Orleans is what the F3 Lexicon terms a “condition,” a dis-Advantage that cannot be remedied. We cannot change it; we can only embrace it and deal with it. We do not have mountains here. We do not have thin air. But we do have more heat and humidity than any place in the country.

  • Better Late than Never – from Fast Tax

Absolution and the Mad Mad Race

Forgetting that Saturday beat downs started an hour later, YHC showed up bright and early at 5:30. After a short nap in the car, 6:30 rolled around.

9 Pax, including 3 that made the Beer-run the night before, ventured forth to Mothership to see if Fast Tax had yet run out of creative ways to Embrace the Suck. With the shovel flag flapping in the breeze, we welcomed War Eagle from F3-Tallahassee, disclaimer was given, and Pax moseyed to the parking lot for some warm-up.

    Warmups consisted of:
    o Abe Vigodas 13 IC
o Mountain Man Poopers 10 IC
    o Bat Wings 20 IC
o Happy Jacks 4 cycles IC

To the rock pile (aka Fountain) we go…yes, Bogie, there is a rock pile at Mothership.

As we lined up amidst the chatter, YHC thought maybe we needed a little absolution first before we got started…make that 12 Absolutions (an 8 count exercise starting in the plank position: feet forward, feet back, left elbow down, right elbow down, legs out, legs in, left elbow straight, right elbow straight).

To the delight of the Pax, Mini Hairburners were next. Starting in plank position, on a line, in cadence, Pax pushed their rocks forward and pulled them back until YHC thought we scarred the grass up enough.

Rocks down, we raced to Humpty-Dumpty, sat on a wall (People’s Chair for 45 secs), and, of course, ended with a fall (to Merkins) and a run back to the rock pile.

Next bit of fun was the Mad Mad Race.
We formed teams of 3, with each Pax in the team choosing one of the following exercises: soldier crawl, broad jump, or crab walk – no duplicates. From the line, the teams had to traverse 40ish yards, switch positions, and come back. Losing two teams had to do 15 burpees [Bogie and the winning team graciously took five].

Rock-a-bye Baby was the next event.
In a chair position with our rocks at chest height, sequence is IC: rocks overhead, back to chest, arms straight out, arms to the left, back to middle, arms to the right, back to middle, back to chest. 10 reps.

Finally, it was time to Get our Rocks Off.
Holding wife pleaser position with rocks on the ground past their head, sequence is IC:
As YHC called “up”, tricep lift to overhead and back down. 15 reps or until it hurts.

With plenty of time remaining, YHC introduced the Bear Crawl Snake as the final event. Pax line up in a plank, head to toe, three feet apart with last man bear crawling to the front, weaving between each Pax until last man passes the finish line (40 to 50 yards).

To close out the morning’s entertainment, we circled up and did a round of choose your own Mary, in reverse direction so as to not hurt Snooze’s feelings.

At 7:23, as the picnic-goers began to arrive (and stare at us), we headed back to the flag with Catfish lamenting the extra 45 seconds we could have exercised.
To ease Catfish’s angst that we would finish early, we counted off 3 times before name-a-rama, announcements, intentions, and prayers.

Coffeteria at Café Navarre with Hokie, Gabbie, and Fracsac joining.

    Thanks for the fellowship!

  • It looked better on paper – from Rudy

Large crowd in the gloom at El Diablo this am. Weather was delightful. Ground was moist, promising a nice, muddy workout. So at 5:30 – YHC gives a disclaimer and 12 PAX head to the football field. BooBoo starts the festivities by mocking the Q about said disclaimer, so all PAX get to start with 5 OYO Boo-Boo Burpees. Then we warm-up. Stretches, SSH, IW, arm circles. Get the blood flowing. And lo-and-behold, Vagabond emerges from the gloom just in time to make for an even 13 PAX.

The Thang 1: Two teams, count total reps. Losing PAX team will have to do more Boo-Boo Burpees. What’s the event? 10 8-cts, run to the other bench and back (i dunno, maybe 20 yards each direction?) 10 BBS, run to the bench and back. That’s 1. Do it again. OYO. Count how many iterations you get done. YHC sets a timer (8 minutes, but don’t tell anyone. Its more fun when you have no idea how long you’ll be working….). Go. Team 1 (with only 6 members) still outshines team 2 28-27. Way to go FastTax and Hawg, leading the way.

    OK, that part worked ok.

Lets head to the playground. Quick round of 6 stations with pull ups as the counter. I’m not even sure what other exercises we did. This part definitely did not work out right. YHC was very confused about how to split PAX into 6 groups. So rather than multiple rounds, lets just get the heck out of here and go get a rock.

The Thang 2: Line up. What’s the event? 10 Overhead, 10 BBS, 10 Press, Bearcrawl 2 trees (20 yards-ish), mosey back. That’s 1. YHC sets a timer (again, 8 minutes. But don’t tell anyone). Go. OYO. Timer finishes, line everyone up by how many laps they got done (Bogey, FastTax, Vagabond and Hand Gernada led with 7). (one brief pause for 5 Hawg-Burpees as punishment for mocking the Q)

Lets do it again – the winner of each group gets to watch the losers do burpees. YHC sets a timer again (4 mins this time). FastTax, BooBoo, LeftCoast and someone from the “other-side-of-the-fence” group were the winners. Everyone else got to do 5 RevSox Burpees.

Overall, that one worked pretty well. Some room for improvement, though.

The Thang 3: OK, this one didn’t work. I hesitate to write it. But it happened. Partner up. PAX 1 does *whatever PAX 1 wants*. PAX 2 mirrors it. 90 seconds, then flipflop. The idea is to challenge our awareness, responsiveness, agility. Rougarou nailed it with a weird Irish clog dance that Hawg desperately tried to follow. War Eagle seemed to take it to mean “Can I just stand here?” which is, technically, allowed.

This one didn’t work so well. But YHC will adjust and try it again one day. Be warned.

Mosey back to the flag (3 mins late…)

NMM: Thanks, Vagabond, for sharing a story of forgiveness. Good reminder for each of us to avoid holding grudges. Reach out to those we may have hurt, or those who have hurt us. Offer forgiveness. Bring ourselves to feel the forgiveness in our heart, even when our brain is not ready to.

  • Great Day for a Beatdown! – from Fast Tax

PAX at El Diablo: Bogey, Bolt, Hand Grenada, Rev Sox, Vagabond, and Fast Tax
Not to be swayed by a little water and mud, 6 pax ventured forth to El Diablo to embrace the SUCK and see what Fast Tax had up his sleeve this time. It was quickly pointed out that I was 45 seconds late, so disclaiming while moseying, we headed to the rock pile.
    Warmups consisted of:
    o Abe Bagodas
    o Matt Biondis
    o Mountain Man Poopers
    o Star Jacks
    o Swan Dives
    o Australian Snow Angels

Though Vagabond was hoping we would be heading to the parking lot that would have been waaaay too clean…to the field of puddles we go.
The first exercise was Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum, starting on the goal line with your rock. Each pax performed the following sequence OYO: Squat, double arm shotput rock, broad jump toward rock, lunge the remaining distance and repeat the sequence until you got to the 40ish yard line. After a 20 sec breather, we repeated the exercise back to the goal line. One of us may have “accidentally” thrown his rock in the very large mud puddle by Rev Sox’s feet…oops.
Red Barchetta was the next event (would have been done to the musical accompaniment of Rush’s 1981 hit – Red Barchetta if the Q remembered to bring his phone)
    Sequence OYO no resting:
o 100 yard dash, 100 SSH, run back to goal line
o 75 yard dash, 75 mountain climbers, run back to goal line
o 50 yard dash, 50 LBCs, run back to goal line
o 25 yard dash, 25 merkins, run back to goal line

The festivities on the field culminated with the Rapid Fire Rock Set.
Set of 20 curls, overhead press, triceps extensions, and rows all with rock, IC, and fast paced. Repeat – 15 reps then 10 reps.
With Bogey lamenting that Rudy was not here to enjoy the festivities (and the mud), we moseyed back to the rock pile to drop our rocks.
After determining pax were not muddy enough (and time remaining) Q introduced the Welsh Dragons: Bear crawl forward 4 steps, do 1 burpee, 1 merkin, and tap the BACK of each shoulder 1 time. Repeat adding 1 rep to each exercise each time – bear crawl forward 4 steps, do 2 burpees, 2 merkins, 2 sets of back of shoulder taps… etc., repeating until we covered about 40 feet.
Light stretch and head back to flag for countoff, name-a-rama, announcements, and prayers.

    #Bogey, #Bolt, #Hand Grenada, #Rev Sox, #Vagabond, and #Fast Tax

  • First Weekend of Jazzfest F3 Nola Style – from Fracsac

    NMM

-It was great to be back at the Mothership! Sign up and bring some heat! YHC proved the Pax could enjoy a serious beat down without ever leaving the Great Lawn!
-YHC wasn’t sure about the play list, but Tool complimented the Dr John choice, which is major coming from the guru of Nola playlists!
-City Park cleanup and Coffeteria at Cafe Navarre with great F2

Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of this awesome brotherhood!
