  • Its march, must be basketball time

It’d been several months, but YHC was ready to get back to business. Unfortunately, in the meantime – apparently YHC had forgotten many aspects of how to Q, and the PAX was always ready and willing to point out his many mistakes and flaws. Oh well. You get what you pay for….

Arriving at 6:20, YHC enjoyed some good F2 with the early arriving PAX. Slowly but surely a good size crew pulled in, and as 6:30 rolled around, the crew of 19 set off towards the east – enjoying the pink and orange hues from the sunrise as we moseyed towards the lawn in front of the museum.

    Warm up:

    • SSH x25 (Here comes Coxswain – he seems to think the workouts start at 6:35)
    • Smurf Jack x20 (Mumblechatter about “Smurf Jack” and “Cowbell” seemed rampant)
    • Hillbilly x25 (Bogey decided to point out some flaw in YHC’s form.  YHC thought his form was perfectly adequate.)
    • ISW x20

Its March, leading up to the NCAA tournament.  So lets talk basketball…

Thing 1: Notre Dame reference, of course.  Wednesday Night, YHC making dinner and turns on the TV to discover ND playing Va Tech.  Early in the second half, ND is down by 21 and looking terrible.  End of second half, ND is up by 5 and celebrating.

    • Peter Parker x21, 5 Merkins
    • Parker Peter x21, 5 Merkins
    • Shoulder Taps x21, 5 Merkins
    • Floyd Maywether x21, 5 Merkins

Little did he know at the time, but our FNG is a Va Tech fan.  Sorry (but not really) about that.

Thing 2: 2000s and the advent of the “1-and-done”- 1 year of college bball before moving on to the pros.  Anthony Davis wins national championship and Final Four MVP.  Then on to the Pelicans.

PAX splits into 3 groups for the “1-and-done Indian Run”.  Each group runs from the front of the Museum out to Wisner, then back and on to the Refinery.  The “1-and-done” part: the last PAX drops for 1 Burpee before sprinting to the front of the line.  Each PAX seems to get about 5 burpees in during the run.

Thing 3: Duke and the dreaded “Bobby Hurley”.  Dang them and their slap-the-floor approach to defensive intensity, epitomized by Bobby Hurley in the early 1990s.  PAX pair up – 10 groups.  YHC fumbles a bit trying to get the 10 exercises ordered to intermix legs, arms, and core.  YHC fails miserable.  Many PAX point out YHC failings.  YHC perseveres.

    • 15 Bobby Hurleys (the timer)
    • Box Jumps
    • Ski Jumps
    • Pull Ups
    • Step Ups
    • Dips
    • Mountain Climbers
    • Rows
    • Knee Ups
    • Merkins

Repeat for 2 cycles.  Bobby Hurleys followed by Box Jumps followed by Ski Jumps: that’s a bad ordering of exercises.  Note to self to try and avoid that next time.

    Mosey to the great lawn

Thing 3a: Quick Pitstop at the Tool Wall for 25 Calf Raises and 25 Monkey Humpers.  Just because.  Mosey on to the great lawn and plank in the center for the 6.

Thing 4: Dean Smith and the 4 Corner offense.  OYO – 8 8-count-body builders at each of the 4 corners around the great lawn.  Start where ever, go in whichever direction.  YHC doesn’t care.  Just get to each corner and do 8.  Go.  El Guapo had to be reminded what a “corner” is.  its not the straight away.  Its the corner.

Return to the center to plank for the 6.

    Thing 5: Fab 5 from Michigan – we’ll do the Ab 5

    • Ray Jackson (the lesser known member): LBC x25 (because YHC couldn’t think of a J ab exercise, though several astute PAX later pointed out the J-Lo….
    • Jimmy King: flutter Kick x25
    • Jalen Rose: dying cockRoach x25
    • Juwan Howard: american Hammer x20 (YHC feeling the pain…)
    • Chris Weber: that’s right, the dr. W x10

Thing 6: Nolan Richardson and Arkansas “40 minutes of Hell”.  PAX finish with our version of “4 minutes of hell”.  Suicides across the great lawn OYO for 4 minutes.  Go.

Mosey to the VSF (20 PAX and we have a VSF?  Where are the flags?!?!?!?)

Count-off, Name-o-rama.  YHC told he is doing it wrong (which, apparently, he is).  Naming of our FNG – was “Papa Bear” (celebrating his brood of 3 married children and youngest 9 year old), until we realize that “Papa Bear” is already claimed.  So late pivot, naming him “Hokie Pokey” for his Va Tech connections.

Announcements (Thursday Night Basin Run, next week’s Tough Mudder).  Intentions and Prayer to close.  Today’s scripture is the parable of the pharisee and tax collector praying in the temple.  Jesus instructs us to pray as the tax collector, humbly.  Lord, teach us to be humble.  Lead by our example, not by our words.

Gentlemen, thank you for the opportunity to lead.

  • Skeeters!

    Disclaimer…

Mosey to rock pile for brief warmup:

    SSHx25/Peter Parkerx25/Arm C.x20(front&back)/Abe Vigodax15/IWx25…grab a rock, one that travels well.

Mosey to the track…here’s where things get dicey, at least for the slow learners.

Split up into 2 pax.  Pax one stays put – 8 squats in cadence, then a run to catch Pax 2.  Pax 2 immediately runs(while Pax 1 squatting) 1/4 with 2 rocks, puts rocks down(or hands off), and they do 8 squats in cadence.  Flapjack style.

Next up is 8 Merkins…you know the drill.

Two laps around the track repeating those two exercises.

Not a great explanation, but I am available for verbal communication if needed.

    Mosey to the shelter…

Pax 1 human chair while Pax 2 does Dipsx20 in cadence…flapjack.

    Pax 1 human chair(rock above head) while Pax 2 does I. Merkinsx10 in cadence…flapjack

Pax 1 human chair(rock held out) while Pax 2 does Derkinsx10 in cadence…flapjack

Mosey to the field of skeeters…

Rock Curlsx20, slowing down after 10/rock squatsx20, slowing down after 12…”mosquitos are killing me…can we please move?”

    Mosey to concrete….

Rock dipsx20, slowing down after 10/LBC’sx35…”mosquitos are killing me!”

Mosey to Rock pile to unload and sprint to flag.

    CO, NameO, Announc, Intentions, Prayer….

  • Man, the weather was great this morning!

This weekend was hopefully a start to why many of live here in the south,  the heat has not arrived and the cold is on the way out.  And In New Orleans,  spring time means the start of festival season and all things outdoors including Saturday  F3 workouts where the “Gloom” term may very well be omitted.  “Roll down the windows, pull down the top,  crank up the Beach Boys and don’t let the musics stop,  we were born to rock…..”  well not quite southern California but enough to pull in a good crowd Saturday morning for F3 New Orleans.

Here is how it actually went:

Quick disclaimer and off to mosey to museum area.  I had my doubts last night the way my lower back felt from Hawg’s Friday morning Rock City with squat jumps and rocks and the ISI challenge of the day.  However we all persevere.

  • RED Friday – Captain Dan Whitten

This RED Friday Workout was in honor of Captain Dan Whitten.

Army Captain Dan Whitten, 28, of Grimes, Iowa, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, died February 2, 2010, when enemy forces in Zabul, Afghanistan, attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. Whitten is survived by his wife, Starr Whitten, his mother, Jill Whitten, his father, Dan Whitten, and his sister, U.S. Army Captain Sarah Whitten.

    Warm-up:’

    Imperial Walkers x 10

Then YHC turned it over to Abacus to complete the warm-up:

    SSH x 20; Windmills x 20; Low Slow Squats x 20; Arm Circles x 15 forward x 15 back

    The Thang:

22 Kettlebell swings; 22 box jumps; 400 meter run; 22 burpees; 22 Squat Thrusters.

Do as many rounds of the above as possible in 30 minutes.

    Moleskin

    • Great work today.  Everyone finished at least 3 rounds.  Mahatma was a beast, completing four rounds in honor of a friend with very serious health issues.
    • Kobains for the box jumps on the wall.  Not the safest exercise.
    • Great job by Abacus leading the workout. Come support him next Friday for his VQ.

  • Record Breaking Workout

A record 26 PAX showed up Wednesday morning to the heavy, humid smell of duck shit. We ran quickly from that spot in order to introduce the PAX to some special hip-loosening yoga stretches. Seaman got a little too excited about these and had to be publicly asked to stop the #mumblechatter. Yankee rolled in hot, as usual, and caught up in time for some downward dog action. From there we took with some run/sprints, burpees, then some BrownBag special – defensive basketball slides. We stopped at the fountain for some power-ups, etc., then continued the run around the park to our soft, special, wet golf course green. BrownBag whipped out another special with some Climate Change – PAX in the Al Gore, tree-hugging position. We finished off with some more run/sprints before being welcomed back to base with the comforting smell of duck shit once again.

  • Friday windup

Hawg sent around a text the night before that there was no Q for the morning Post.  QHC stepped up to the plate two weeks ago and didn’t want to hog the honor, but wondered who would do so.  As YHC meandered over to the AO, he saw a familiar silhouette moseying his way: HVAC.  Just the two of us?  We’d split.  As we started, Abacus joined in, as Rudy lapped up a few times for his marathon training.  TClaps to anyone who runs or trains for marathons: those are not meant for normal humans.

Anyway, HVAC started off with a bang–as usual.  I used to think Hawgcycle was the King of no pauses.  But then there was HVAC.  Keep us pushed to the max.  If I remember, the first COP was something like:

    • SSHs 20xIC
    • Windmills 20xIC
    • One-two-threes (touch toes, then hips and praise Jesus) 20xIC
    • Peter Parkers
    • Mountain Climbers
    • Bicycles (legs circling with hips high in the air)
    • Russian twists
    • Something else evil and fast
    • more Bicycles
    • Something else evil and fast
    • Evil yoga stretches: warriors, etc.

Then a handoff to YHC, so we mosey to the nearby fence for a People’s Chair for about a minute OR SO.  Mosey to the rock pile to pick up rocks not SO big.

    • Overhead press 20xIC
    • Curls 20xIC
    • Tricep lifts behind the head 20xIC
    • Deadlifts 20xIC
    • Squats 20xIC

Rinse and repeat with 15xIC, then with 10xIC and finally with 5xIC.  Mosey back to the fence with our rocks for some more People’s Chair.  About half of minute and then overhead presses 10xIC and then curls 10xIC and a short cool off for maybe another 15 seconds.  Mosey back for a Circle of Mary burdened:

    • Russian twists with rocks 20xIC
    • Flutter kicks with rocks 20xIC
    • Hello Dollys with rocks 20xIC
    • Penguins 20xIC
    • Slow, slow merkins 10xIC

And as the PAX circled up for a countoff and name-o-rama, Rudy joined us with his sweaty self (no bleeding nipples yet; that was the next morning).  COT for all that is good.

    Jingle Vader

  • Spartacus II – Wet n Wild

The rain stopped just in time for 7 men to work, grow and sharpen the iron.

DISCLAIMER, let’s mosey…Grab a rock, medium, one you won’t drop on your head…Let’s mosey to the shelter (cuz it has benches).

    COP:

    -SSH x 30 IC

    -Mt Climbers x 30 IC

-Arm Circles x 30 IC (15 ea. dir.)

    -IW x 30 IC

    1. Bulgarian Split Lunge (30 sec/ea leg)
    2. Shoulder Press
    3. Goblet Squat
    4. T-pushup
    5. Alternating Step-up w/rock
    6. Squat Press
    7. Side Lunge with Touch (Elf on the Shelf)
    8. Merkins
    9. Lunge and Rotation
    10. Elevated Wife Pleasers (Rudy, stop looking…)

Rinse and Repeat for a total of two rounds.

times up…send your rock home and mosey to the SF.

Countoff, namerama, announcements, and a prayer.  It was an honor to lead.  SYITG…

  • Double Dir-TAYY Mac Deuce

Pre-Thang:  Weather was awesome 70-ish with the temp, a little humid but nothing crazy.  Ground was wet from Friday rains – perfect for something on your six.

My first workout ever with OBT was a Dirty MacDeuce.  It makes me happy every time.  Happy in an I hate you but I love you kind of way.  So on past Saturdays I have often done a regular old Dirty MacDeuce.  I have done other things — Rounds with Tyson, 11’s, the Route 66, the baseball diamond, deck of death, etc but I have always loved the total body workout given by a MacDeuce.  So I wanted to one up it – and I Q’d a Double Dirty Mac.

The Thang:  Mosey to the big Quad.  Here we did a SSH x 20, Merks x 20, Imperial Walker Squats x 20, Low SLow Squats x 20.

LOOOONG Mosey to the track.  Through some puddles.  Tried to go around then at some point it was too much so we just went through the muck.

Once at the track we did some LBCs just to rest from the long Mosey.  Then we went straight into the DMac.

Lap with backwards run at the end — Circle we did:  Staggered Merks, Roaches, Reg Squats x 12

Lap with kerioke at the end —  Circle we did:  Staggered Merks – Right, Freddie Merks, Lunge x 12

Lap with butt kicks at the end — Circle we did:  Diamond Merks, Iron Cross, Lunges to the side x 12

Lap with high skips at the end — Circle we did:  Plank Walk, Pickle Pounders, Lunge backwards x 12

Started to worry about time so the 2nd mac deuce we had to double up all exercises.

First lap Indian Run.  Second lap on your own.

We did x 24 Mat Jumps (had to make up 4 at the end), Russian Twists, and Shoulder Taps

2 full laps – at your own pace

We did x 24 Hip Dips, x 24 Nolan Ryans, x 24 Low Country Crab

We did it!  With 5 min to the buzzer and mumblechatter holding my feet to the fire about the “time email”  we walked to the street and ran to the flag.

We arrived at exactly 730am.  Good job men.   We logged 3.6 miles.

Rudy arrived from his LONG run just in time for the Circle

Immediately after I couldn’t stay for coffee – I had to hustle to the 504k race.

COT:  For Splash.  For friends who are sick.

    Thanks for letting me lead.

  • QuadraOkwata

When it’s cold out, the wind from Okwata makes it colder. When it’s humid with no wind, it’s just really humid. The Pax was treated with a light breeze that kept the temperature quite remarkable, while keeping the fog at bay. YHC arrived a few minutes early to plant the shovel flags, one for our Country and one for our Nation! Before long, 3 other Pax arrived, so it was time to give the disclaimer…..and then….

Mosey to the mardi gras fountain, take a quick lap around it, then circle up on the grass in front for:

    SSH IC x 31
    Imperial SW IC x 10
    Abe Vigodas IC x 10
    Mountain Climbers IC x 20
    Peter Parker IC x 20
    Parker Peter IC x 20

Mosey to the fountain for an Okwata favorite, especially given the return of Surge!

Double Shots with Jack Webb at the Barre!

1 merkin with 2 air presses (aka double shot) in the peoples chair against the railing at the fointain.
2 merkins with 4 air presses in peoples chair
    3 merkins with 6 air presses….
    You get the idea….
    10 merkins with 20 air presses…..

Mosey to the House of Pain for Stations:

    Station 1: Squats AMRAP
    Station 2: Dips AMRAP
    Station 3: Pull Ups AMRAP
Station 4: Bear crawl up levee, do 5 burpees and run back to HOP (Timer)

Mosey to Canal for a modified Dora, so partner up:
    100 burpees
    100 LBT’s
    100 Jump Sqauts

    Pax 1: Does exercise
    Pax 2: Run lap
    Flap Jack until exercises complete

This turned into 25 burpees for each pax twice (getting to 50 each) to make it the 100, and a few more laps to each get to the LBT’s and Jump Squats. Good thing we had the best of F3 nation present to keep it from going south! The laps took a bit longer than expected. YHC should have remembered how awful it was from the last indian run!

Mosey back to flags for some Mary

    Flutter Kicks IC x 20
    Tin Snips IC x 20
    Dying Cockroach IC x 20
    Hello Dolly IC x 20

0615, so time for the COT

Countoff, name-o-rama, announcements, intentions and closed with a prayer.

    NMM
YHC got lucky today with the Q on the fly. The modified Dora could have been bad, but lucky for YHC the pax kept it on track. Lesson Learned? Probably nothing…..
T-Claps for all the prayers and thoughts in regard to Mahatma’s grandson, which is Disclaimers son. He’s out of the hospital and doing well!

Thanks for posting with me today!

  • Friday is great day for DownPainMents

Get after YHC, cuz he’s waiting too long to post back blasts and now can’t remember squat–other than it was achy.  So after a disclaimer, THE THANG.

Warm up with some SSHs, Low Slow Squats, Slow Sun Gods, and surely someone on our faces.

Then gets some rocks to mosey to the bleachers for:

    • Bench Presses 20xIC
    • Squats 20xIC
    • Dead Lifts 20xIC
    • Curls 20xIC

Rinse and repeat with 15xIC, then 10xIC and finally 5xIC.

Saunter to the fence for some people’s chair–some times with rocks, some times without.  Holding your rock out in front for more than a few seconds sux big time.

Circle of Mary: lots of stuff with and without rocks.  [Putins with rocks is of course a favorite of YHC.]  Close out with 10 burpees.

Countoff, Namorama and COT.  Thanks, JV
