  • Krazy Ivan IV: Speedy Sings, Fracsac Frowns – from The Hammer

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair…for Fracsac apparently. The man who has a folder on his phone dedicated to the Freedom Hammer was crestfallen for a second year running. Bordering on tearful, Fracsac and his Southshore breathern had to witness a spritely Speedy Gonzales hoist the Freedom Hammer in triumph after the Northshore thumped the Southshore for the Crazy Ivan IV, 257 to 153. Precision results, thoroughly vetted and audited by the governing body, are as follows:

    1. Speedy Gonzales 31:22 (6:30 average pace)-recruited years ago by Jose 10k
    2. Amnesia 33:55
    3. In Time 34:07
    3. Cowbell 34:07
    5. The Hammer 34:34
    6. Saban 35:09
    7. Kuch 35:37
    8. Steve 36:45
    9. TankedUp! 37:20
    10. RevSox 37:36
    11. Sogo 37:47
    12. Hog’s Breath 40:25
    13. Thumb War 41:30
    14. Bongo (time between 41:30 and 42:43-you should have found me afterwards Bongo!)
    15. Snooze 42:43
    16. Pelican 42:44
    17. Shooter 43:34
    18. Flea 45:16
    19. BBQ 46.35
    20. Russo 46:55
    21. Jose 10k 47:38
    22. Pai Gow 49:55
    23. Baywatch (it was raining hard, lots was happening, Hog’s Breath was talking to me…sorry Baywatch I didn’t get your time)
    24. Belloq
    25. JV (not that JV, the other one) 55:19
    26. Kenner Brah
    27. McGiver

And honorable mentions to PickAxe and Chainsaw, The Hammer’s 2.0s, who finished the first lap together in a blistering 13 minutes.

Thanks for coming out guys. You all get a trophy for participating in this unequivocally, completely stupid and utterly pointless annual competition. YHC was thoroughly impressed with the total disregard for your personal wellbeing and safety and looks forward to a repeat performance same time next year. Over and out.

  • Easy breezy – from Waterpik

2 pax along with YHC braved the elements and posted to the milestone marsh on windy chilly morning to start the week off.

Pull-ups at the playground, then mosey to the lakefront stopping at several intersections for some additional exercises.

Hit the seas all for 3 sets of Bulgarian split squats and derkins.

Mosey back to the marsh to circle up for cot.

  • Holiday calories -BAM – from Waterpik

YHC felt the need to work off some Holiday calories after a week of Big meals, late nights, desserts, beer, wine, and cocktails. The holidays—YHC enjoyed a bit of it all, and they’re not over yet. But, alas, it was time to get back to work, including “work in the gloom”

After a brief warmup, YHC led the pax through a benchmark beatdown that was intended to be reminiscent of the origins of the milestone marsh- started by butt splice.

    One minute of AMRAP merkins.

One minute of AMRAP big boy Sit-ups,

1 mile timed run down to the lakefront’s sea wall and back. (Hence the moniker, milestone marsh)

Back at the AO, it was time for 3-6-9. Thank you shooter.

Pull-ups, burpees, merkins. 4 sets total.

Close out by heading to center court for some mary.

cot and thanks to Akbar for praying us out.

  • The Nightmare Before Christmas 2021 (The Return) – from Grundy

Twas six nights before Christmas, in 2020 it was spurned, but now the year reads 21’, and the nightmare has returned.

This workout is intense, you need not take my word, that’s fine. But if you need a reference, Tanked up will tell you I’m not lying. Sometimes we went slick and other times was with a ruck, and in the times that it got hard we had to just embrace the suck.

This year there was Hogs breath, Steve, and Junior Varsity. Russo and Amnesia and the newly disdained Grundy

For those still unaware (or knew before and did not show), here’s the list of all we did…

    For workout see below:

    150 burpees
    2 miles of running
    150 man-makers
    2 miles of rucking
    100 Merkins
    100 Sit-ups
    100 Squats
    100 4 count SSHs
    100 4 count mountain climbers
    100 4 count flutter kicks
    100 Ruck Presses
100 2 count Ruck twists (American Hammers)
    100 Ruck Pull Throughs

We left with aches and bruises and pray we have no long term damage, but the tales we heard from Hogs breath will help us carry on and manage. The man shows up to beatdowns from the far land of Slidell, so if there was a “commitment” award he’d surely win the title.

JV has become a real staple of our crew. With his completion of the nightmare he’s now earned his stripes to boot. He now joins a fraternity of those who’ve reached the end, forevermore he’s one of us and one I’m proud to call my friend.

Russo showed up with what seemed was insufficient baggage. But once more it’s been shown “it matters not the size of package”. In the end it made it through with Russo’s sheer determination, and that describes the man I’ve come to have such admiration.

Amnesia powered on when his body said ‘enough’! But just one look at that man’s legs will tell you that he’s tough! When the last rep was accomplished, and after talking with his spouse, Amnesia climbed up on his bike and then he rode back to his house.

Steve returned once more for what could maybe be called penance, but how could one commit such evil where this would be the sentence?! The only way I can account for Steve repeating this endeavor, is that he’s a man who’ll walk ‘longside a brother through whatever.

These examples, and countless more, are the reasons we all do this. And thus our workout completed once more “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.

    Until next year….

  • Bowl season has begun – from Shooter

For those lovers of the game of football, this week will prove to be one filled with decisions.. Wether it be watching a bowl game of teams with a 500 or less record in a bowl named after the Iconic play toy Mr. Potato head (Famous Idaho potato bowl) or say The Dukes Mayo bowl for you mayonnaise fans, perhaps you might want to checkout the Cheez-it bowl if your a snack er.. There is also the option of the NFL doubleheader tonight due to postponement from COVID protocols… Whatever one decides, it appears the networks have you covered with either choice.. So, the YHC decided to have a beatdown reflecting the week ahead.

    Warmup
Alternating 20IC and 10IC PAX completed SSH, Cherry Pickers, Hillbillies, Grass grabbers, Imperial walkers and slow Mosey to OLL.

    Thang
Utilizing the parking strips in front the Church we completed 1st and 10 from the Exicon. Starting at the 10 yard line PAX completed 10/1 Merkins and Burpees. Sprint 90 yards returning with a mosey to the 20 9/2. Return to the 30 8/3 etc. etc. At this point YHC calls out Russo who was actually doing it as detailed from the Exicon Merkins one end and the Burpees at the other like 11s.. Maybe next time the YHC will read the proper instructions a 2nd or 3rd time so he gets it right..Upon completion we picked up a Mosey back around the block stopping at another parking lot with curbs for our next round.. PAX should know by now that YHC hates the Ascending count of a called exercise so instead of doing Ascending curb crawls we did Descending curb crawls.. Started with 13 Irkins bear crawl 12 Derkins back with the bear crawl 11 Irkins back with bear crawl 10 Derkins , etc. etc. etc. back to 1.. Moseyed back to the breezeway for the wrap up of Donkey kickoffs 10 followed by 20 2/1 Mountain climbers. R/R descending by 2 on the rep counts to 4 donkey kickoffs and then finishing off with the return to 10/20 again..

    Count, announce, COT

Appreciate the post gentlemen and until the next Gloom 👍🏼👊🏼✌🏼!!!

  • Slow Ride – from Akbar

4 HIM at the Marsh today. Mumblechatter was all about Goose’s beatdown and the pain he brought to all. JV And YHC were sore from head to toe.

    Conditions: 67 and misty

Warm Up: IW, Grass Grabbers, SSH, Butt Kicks, Self-Love x10

Great to see Jose 10k out again with the school break. Waterpik came running in hot after being greeted by 2 dogs on his typical run to the AO. The dogs circled back around and hung out with us for a while, racking JV at one point. Rep counts were 17-20 before calling time. No clean up required this gloom, the playground was in good shape.

    Til next gloom, Akbar

  • The Walls of (Chris) Jericho – from Steve

Simple beatdown at the Marsh this past Monday, the ol’ Walls of Jericho. But these were not the insurmountable, Grundyesque walls of old (which featured bear crawls halfway up the Gipper garage, sprints, and other such nonsense). No, we opted for much shorter walls – Steve-size walls. And good thing, too, we didn’t want to scare away the FNG that JV brought out.

Warmorama: IW’s, windmills, seal jacks, arm circles, cherry pickers, butt kicks, all around 15x IC.

Then a short mosey over to the Treen Center to get cracking on those walls. Seven reps of seven exercises, followed by a lap around the building. Seven times. The exercises were:

    7 burpees
    7 sit-ups
    7 jump squats
    7 t merkins
    7 leg raises
    7 smks
    7 wide arm merkins

Finished all 7 rounds and headed back to the court for one final set of each (OCD kicked in and I couldn’t leave the final count at 49 for each of these, had to bump it up to 50).

COT and naming of our FNG, which was maybe the most painful naming in memory. But welcome, nonetheless, Wrestlemania™! It was great to have a new face out at the Marsh and we look forward to seeing you Saturday. And t-claps to JV for the EH. Thank you men for posting and getting me out there, it always feels good to start the week at the Marsh with you guys.

  • Old faces, new faces – from Waterpik

Brisk 45 degree temps greeted the Pax at the milestone marsh. Speaking of pax there was a mix of old faces (Bushwacker) and new faces (fletch) who showed up for the beatdown. It was good to see fletch out there making his first post to the marsh. And Bushwacker’s return visit reminded us how much we miss his constant chatter throughout the entirety of the
Workout. His stories and commentary were out in full force as were his wardrobe (beanie hat, his trusty sweatshirt and I think he even dragged his bed comforter out there to keep warm. All joking aside , please grace us with your presence more, mr fire fighter.

Thang was 4 corners, then mary.

Men, have a great week! Let’s all try to be the best version of ourselves this week.

    Pik

  • Something Borrowed – from Akbar

3 PAX at the Marsh this morning, arriving to a near perfect 61 degrees. Mumblechatter before warm up was of course IronPax, and JV was telling his tales of Saturday.

Mentioning his sister’s wedding happening this weekend, the tie in was perfect since YHC had already planned to borrow some ideas of a recent workout and modify it for the Marsh. We could have made the tradition work since Waterpik was wearing something blue and JV is new. But YHC is not old, and no one knows what a sixpence is.

Warm Up: Walkout plank merkin hold x 10. (Standing position, bend at waist, touch the ground and walk out to plank, merkin, walk back up = 1)

Mosey to the lakefront stopping for SSH, IW, Self-Love x10

Lakefront Wall: Freak Nasty/ Bulgarian Split Squat L/R leg 12,8,5 IC

Rips: wall sit + 50 air presses; 25 Calf raises OYO

7’s at Rips stairs: T Merkins bottom, SMC top. JV guessed where this came from, one of Steve’s favorites.

    25 calf raises OYO

Lakefront Wall: Freak Nasties | Copperhead Squats IC 12,8,5 IC

Mosey back to the Marsh, stopping at the first 3 intersections for bear crawls and 5 Merkins. Jog to the Marsh for another round of Wall sit and 50 air presses

Mosey to playground for 7’s: Pull ups and LBC’s

Count, Name, and Pik prayed us out.

Announcements: 7 Year Convergence October 16th at City Park/Mothership

Thanks for letting me lead – Akbar
