  • Toilet Paper Recall – from Disclaimer

21 pax showed up for a Charmin/Disclaimer Que

Charmin led us out to the football field for a warm-up that included:
    SSH x 21
    Monkey Humpers x 15
Mountain Man Poopers x 10-15 based on vive
    Hillbillies x 10-15 same as MMP’s
    Hairy Rockettes x 10

Disclaimer took us over to the play ground and instructed everyone to get in groups of three (we had 7 groups).

25 mins total time of work (stay together as a team….every complete the work)
    -800 meter run
    -25 pull-ups
    -50 merkins
    -75 air squats

The goal was two complete at least two rounds.

We had a bunch of people finished two rounds (good sign for the murph coming up!)

After that we ran in over to the rock pile.

-Shoulder press, bicep curls, tricep extensions overhead
15,15,15 hold your rock until the group finishes

    5 burpees

Repeat same exercises 12 reps of each hold rock until everyone finishes

    10 ROCK on swings

Repeat same exercises 9 reps of each hold rock until everyone finishes

5 burpee rock ground to overhead press (I looks and feels like it sounds!)

Indian run ( which was more of an Indian sprint back to the flag)

  • War Eagle Would Have Been Proud – from Fast Tax

El Diablo 3/23/2022 – Better late than never…

As YHC was heading to El Diablo that fine morning, the plan was to introduce a few new routines that had bounced around my creative brain yesterday, together with some Fast Tax favorites. However, as YHC walked up to the flag and saw the 15 other PAX in attendance, that plan got tossed as YHC realized, with a little prodding from Rudy, that we have never had a 16 PAX game of Battle Frisburpee. Time for an audible…

With disclaimers being said, we headed down the jogging path toward the rock pile pausing every 30 yards or so for warmups, consisting of:
    SSH
    Hairy Rockettes
    Swan Dives
    Crab Merkins Plank

Once we arrived at the rock pile, and unwilling to jump right into the Battle, YHC began the day’s festivities with Fee Fi Fo Fum: PAX selected medium rocks then starting on a line with your rock, each PAX performed the following sequence OYO: Squat, double arm shotput rock, broad jump toward rock, lunge the remaining distance and repeat the sequence until Q said stop. Repeat back to the rock pile.

    Welsh Dragons were next.
Remain in plank position the whole time. Bear crawl forward 4 steps, do 1 merkin, 1 plank jack, and tap the BACK of each shoulder 1 time. Repeat adding 1 rep to each exercise each time – bear crawl forward 4 steps, do 2 merkins, 2 plank jacks, 2 sets of back of shoulder taps… etc. Go until you get to 10 reps each, you’ve covered 30-50 feet, or until your arms fall off – whichever comes first.

Next event was Wall of Fire: While PAX are doing People’s chair, take turns doing 10xmerkins 10xLBCs and 3 burpees. YHC quickly realized that 16 in a circle may be a little too much to hold people’s chair 3 times around…Time for Battle Frisburpee

    Battle Frisburpee:
After laying out the cones and a quick recap of the rules for PAX in attendance, we divvied up into teams and began to battle. YHC later realized that with 16 people, the field should have been at least 5 yards wider. Thus, the new width guideline is 15 yds for 10 or less people, 20 yards for 12 – 14, and 25 yards for 16+.

Team 1 (Shirts): Vagabond, Hawgcycle, Rougarou, Left Coast, MacGyver, Pilsbury, Bogie, Hand Grenada
Team 2 (Skins): Hokie, Scantron, Rudy, PVC, Gabrielle, Boo Boo, Mahatma, Fast Tax

The battle was hard fought and close. The “last one touched” rule (strategically hit opposing team members that guard too closely) was used effectively and often by both sides. The potential of the Baller to dole out punishment (vis a vis penalty burpees when the ball hits you) was best epitomized by Hawgcycle, who was by far the most promiscuous Baller in history. Also notable was Team 1’s (and maybe Team 2 once or twice) utter lack of regard for the 3-burpee contact rule.

However, the most noteworthy was MacGyver’s expansion of the game into a full contact sport in a way that would have made War Eagle proud.

In the end, Team 1 could not overcome Team 2’s superior strategy and execution.
Team 2 carried the day with a final score of 5-4.

With game over we headed to COT for name-o-rama, announcements, intentions, and prayer.
Followed by Coffeteria and a discussion/clarification of the rules at PJs (See below).

    Rule clarification:
    1) If the Frisbee goes out of bounds in the air and then back in without touching the ground, it is still considered out of bounds and a turnover at the point it initially went out.
    2) If a PAX catches the Frisbee in the opposing team’s goalie box and is hit by the baller at the same time, THE TIE GOES TO THE FRISBEE RECEIVER.
    3) There is no interfering with the other side’s ball.

    Thanks for the fellowship! SYITG

  • Bringing the Wood (-en toothpick) – from Rudy

El Diablo Bringing the Wood. Thanks to Thumb War for inspiring Hawg to start a new tradition! The El Diablo bat was to make its first appearance this fine morning. From here on out – 30 El Diablo workouts, including 5 Qs, will get your name etched on this fine bat.

The PAX were all anxious to see The Wood. The anticipation. The anxiety. The desire to be like Reggie Bush, bringing That Wood to El Diablo. YHC had the Q, so Hawg who was allegedly travelling delivered the wood the night before.

YHC took one look at the Wood, and suspected there would be problems. And as the PAX gathered in the gloom, YHC was right. “Where’s the Bat?” asked Scantron. “Wait, is that it?” sez Bogey. “That looks like a Toothpick” mocked Bolt. And on and on it went. YHC had to deflect criticism, happily throwing Hawg under the bus – “Hey, don’t hate the messenger.”

But anyway, this is our Wood (or Wood-let, or Wooden Toothpick). Whatever, lets get started.

Quick Warmup, then all the PAX grab one of the presents that YHC had delivered to the football field. A Log, a Bag o’ Rocks, A workout rope, dumbbells (not the War Eagle kind), medicine ball, etc.. All in, some 10 toys were available. But alas – there were 16 of us (counting the late arriving Triple Shift). So make do with some other exercises (burpees – what else would FracSac pick, 8 counts, etc…). One good addition – balancing on a basketball for derkins. Challenge both the upper body and core to stay on that ball.

The Thang: one PAX (“it”) runs a lap with the bat above their head. (shortly modified to half a lap in the interest of time). Everyone else is doing their exercise with their thing. Then we rotate. Everyone got a chance with all of the toys, and everyone got to run once with the glorious bat. FastTax had an interesting take on “Thruster” that looked strangely like a “Squat”.

Still had time for a Brian Kelly inspired game of “Turncoats and Traitors”. Groups of 3 – one PAX sprint backwards across the football field. The other two start with 2 burpees (later 1 burpee, later 1 8 ct) then sprint to catch the traitor. If they caught him, the traitor did burpees. Otherwise, the chasers did burpees. Or maybe everyone did burpees. Depends on how YHC felt at the moment. So everyone got to be a traitor and get chased down. Good times. Enjoy your coach, LSU.

COT – 16 PAX welcomed the bat. Great seeing everyone in the glom, and welcome to Downhiller from Birmingham. Thanks for letting me try some new things – look forward to June 22nd, 2022 (the 30th El Diablo workout from now) to see who may be first to get their name on the bat.

  • Back to Burpees by Popular Demand – from Fracsac

12 pax at The Uptowner looking to put some work in to improve and get stronger. Weather was a bit humid, but cooler awesome weather is on the horizon! Bogey, Hand Grenada, Left Coast, War Eagle, Mahatma, Hokie, Hobbs, Boo Boo, Triple Shift, Fast Tax, Pass Interference (DR from Atlanta) and YHC got after it at 0530 sharp.

Disclaimer given, then mosey to the well marked and groomed field.

Warmup was typical with some bat wings to get the arms ready! Yes, Moroccan Night Club dancing happened!

    Dirty Mac Duece

We did 4 rounds of 12 reps of a leg, an arm and a core. Ran a full lap between sets on first, modified to half lap on other 3 to ensure we would finish.

One minute left, so some West Bank Lazy Boyz!

    Mosey back to the flag

    COT

    NMM

-War Eagle was upset with YHCs lack of burpees recently. This beat down provided resolution.
-The Uptowner is sort of a non running AO, but that’s just a guideline and is flexible. The pax didn’t mind. Maybe running meant less burpees, so will have to address that next time. Less running, more burpees….
    -Coffeteria was awesome as always.
-Pass Interference visiting from Atlanta was great, we always enjoy visitors down range!
Convergence is tomorrow 0630 City Park to celebrate 7 years in Nola!

  • Rush and the Giant – from Fast Tax

It was a pleasantly coolish morning as eight Pax manned-up to start the week appropriately at Rock City, eagerly anticipating what YHC had in store.
After disclaimer, we headed to the rock pile.

    Warmups consisted of:
    o Abe Bagodas X 10 IC
    o Matt Biondis X 20 IC
    o Seal Jacks X25 IC
o Mountain Man Poopers X10 IC
    o Swan Dives X 10 IC

After med-heavy rock selections, we headed to the field.
The first exercise was Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum, starting on the line with your rock.
Each Pax performed the following sequence OYO: Squat, double arm shotput rock, broad jump toward rock, lunge the remaining distance, pick up and overhead press rock, and repeat the sequence for 40ish yards, then, turn around and repeat back to the starting point.

Colt 45s (basically a broken down curl) were next, with rock IC: 15 reps go from the bottom of the movement up to the halfway point (with your arms at a 90 degree angle and hands at elbow level). 15 reps go from the halfway point up to the top of the bicep curl (hands up near shoulder level). 15 reps Start at the bottom of the movement and complete a full range of movement all the way up.

Captain Thor followed, a 1:4 ratio of BBS to American Hammer, performed OYO, increasing by 1:4 each rep (i.e. ending with 10 BBS and 40 Amer Hammer).

The Red Barchetta was the next event (should have been done to the musical accompaniment of Rush’s 1981 hit – Red Barchetta if YHC had remembered to bring his phone).
Sequence OYO but plank after each sequence until last Pax completes:
o 100 yard dash, 100 SSH, run back to goal line
o 75 yard dash, 75 mountain climbers (2 is 1), run back to goal line
o 50 yard dash, 50 BBS, run back to goal line
o 25 yard dash, 25 merkins, run back to goal line
o 10 yard dash, 10 Burpees, run back to goal line

Then it was back to the rock pile.

With a little time to spare, YHC thought a little absolution would be good for everybody…make that 15 Absolutions OYO followed by 5 burpees (for Fracsac) and a mosey back to the flag for COT.

    Thanks for the fellowship!

  • Cowbells on the Mountain – from Rudy

5:30 am. 80 degrees, and at least 80% humidity. Summer in NOLA. 11 PAX ventured out into these glorious conditions to enjoy a run.

YHC gave the disclaimer. He clearly indicated that it would be important to watch for potholes. Apparently, some PAX would choose not to listen. But with that, we were off to the base of the mountain (just over 1 mile away).

YHC and Belloq had an enjoyable run to the mountain, discussing future plans for Beignet. Great kid, great future in front of him. Belloq kept up steady stream of conversation while YHC was focusing on just trying to keep up. Thanks for the push!

Everyone gathered at the base of the mountain for a new drill I call the “Cowbell”, after the PAX who introduced me to it. 1 Minute sprint up the mountain as far as you can go, followed by 2 minute recovery stroll/mosey back down the mountain. Rinse and repeat 6 times. YHC still hasn’t made it to the start of the fence. That’s the elusive goal… Cracklin didn’t seem to have a problem getting there, nor did Snooze (at least the first 2 or 3 times). Way up ahead, Kuch and El Guapo seemed to have no problems reaching at least that far. Nice work!

After everyone got 6 sprints, time to mosey back to the flag. And 10 of the 11 managed to make it back. One PAX forgot the disclaimer and was waylaid by a pothole on Wisner. Be well Snooze!

COT back at the flag. Prayers for kids, parents and teachers as we all struggle to navigate through a new school year and the challenges this will present. May we all try to reflect God in our words and actions. Thanks for joining me!
