  • Convergence ’18

    f3nola.com/…/uploads/2018/10/IMG_5366.mov

In celebration of the 4 year Anniversary of the starting of F3 NOLA,  a Convergence was called at the site where it all started, the Mothership.  PAX from every AO in F3 NOLA; Northshore, Westbank, Kenner, Baton Rouge, Metairie, Mid-City, and Uptown, converged on City Park for a celebration of the past 4 years of Men growing in Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith, and the growth and success that F3 NOLA has experienced during that time.

Rudy got the party started early with a small group that arrived at 6:30 with a quick 5K Run through City Park; around the Festival Grounds, the Lagoon and back around to meet up with waiting PAX back near the Peristyle.  8 Flags were planted in the ground at the corner of The Great Lawn and the PAX slowly began to gather.  The Detailed Disclaimer(“You can’t sue us”) was given by Triple Shift, and off we moseyed to the large lawn near NOMA.

The Beat-down was divided into four 15 minute segments, each with a different Q taking an opportunity to lead.  Each Q was selected to represent each of the 4 years of F3’s existence.

1st Q – Triple Shift – Led off representing the founding group that started F3 NOLA that first year

2nd Q – Turbo Tax  – represented the 2nd year growth and addition of Northshore PAX to F3 NOLA.

3rd Q – FracSac – represented the third year and the growth of the Metairie, and Lakeview/Mid City AO’s

4th Q – Medulla Oblongata – YHC, represented the recent surge and growth Uptown by the recent “HNJ Invasion”

After a quick mosey to the lawn to the side of NOMA we circled up for the a warm up.

    WARM UP  – In Cadence

31 – Worlds Slowest, Side Straddle Hops

    10 – 6-Count Burpees

    20 – Imperial Walker Squats

    10 – Abe Vigodas

    10 – Arm Circles – Fwd & Rev

    20 – Plank Jacks

    20 – Peter Parkers

    15 – Merkins

The Q was passed to Turbo Tax who moved the Pax over to lawn slightly closer to NOMA.  Turbo started off by asking everyone to take off their shirt and create a “Flag” by tucking it in the back of your shorts.  This generated plenty of Mumble chatter among the Pax.

    FLAG GAMES

2 Minute Flag Games – Your shirt is your Flag, Don’t let it get pulled!

1st Round – 2 Knee-to-Chest Jumps every time your flag gets pulled, reload and continue  pulling after jumps.

2nd Round (x2) – Tennis Balls and a Nerf football were added as additional “Ammo”, In addition to Jumps for flag pulls, if hit with the tennis balls – 5 Merkins, hit by the football – 5 Burpees, reload flag and keep going after exercise.

3rd Round (x2) – Same Rules as 2nd round, but no reload of flag, perform penalty exercise, Plank and wait in place till end.

4th Round – Trophy Flags – Same rules as Round 3 but Flag puller keeps and collects flags he pulls, Person with the most flags wins.

Not sure if anyone kept track of the winners but as Turbo Tax said we’re all WINNERS!

The Q was then passed to FracSac.  We remained in place and lined up along the First Tree Line.

    SUICIDES

Run to tree 1 and back 5 Burpees

Run to tree 2 and back 5 Burpees

Run to tree 3 and back 5 Burpees

KimChi lost his Applewatch in the Chaos that was Flag Games so we lined up and Bear crawled to the 4th tree while looking for the watch.  Not found, but later found by KimChi behind the area we bear crawled.  Crisis averted!

The Q was passed to YHC and we moseyed back to the Great Lawn.

    CONVERGENCE CIRCUIT

8 stations had been designated around the perimeter of the Great Lawn with a Flag positioned in the Center. Each station was marked with a sheet of paper with the exercise for each station.  The Pax was divided into groups at each station.   The Bobby Hurley station would provide the count of 20 reps,  while every other station did AMRAP of their designated exercise.   At Halt, Everyone ran to middle of lawn to CONVERGE and partner up for 5 Patty Cake Merkins, then rotate clockwise to the next station.  PAX was instructed to pick a different partner each time they returned to the middle between stations.  The stations were:

    Bobby Hurley’s

    Merkins

    Mountain Climbers

    Plank Jacks

    Low Slow Squats

    Jump Lunges

    Dips

Monkey Humpers – (by the street, of course)

One round was completed and time was getting short so we circled up for some quick Mary

    2 MINUTES OF MARY

Dying Cock Roach IC x 20

    Wife Pleasers IC x 20

    We are done!

    COT

    Circle up for Count-O-Rama – 66 PAX!!,  Name-O-Rama 3 FNG!!

FNG’s Named – Welcome to Blanks, Chalk Talk, and Green Screen!!

Bring it in tight for a Sweaty Ball of Man!!  Butt Splice finished it up with a prayer.

    NMM

We moseyed over to Morning Call  where a awesome spread of food awaited us.   Spinach Mushroom Egg Scramble, Bacon, Pork Loin, Bananas, Croissants, Bottled Water, and Iced Coffee.  Mike as usual took great care of us with plates and napkins and great service.  Rudy presented Mike with his honorary membership and a blue F3 NOLA shirt.   Some great F2 went down as we ate and drank our fill.  Big thank you to all who made it out for this awesome beat-down in the park.  Big thank you to everyone who organized and provided the food and drinks we enjoyed.  Finally, big thanks to Woz for documenting the whole event with pictures and video.   I know, I  speak for all the Q’s when I say, it was a pleasure to lead as always, and thanks for the opportunity to lead this great PAX.

Hope to see everyone and more next year!!  SYITG!!

  • Winter Is Icumin In

Well maybe not GofT winter, but I’ll take it.  So with a quick disclaimer from YHC, the PAX moseyed off to a new location (within a circle of palms at Loyola for a good echo) for the First Circle of Pain:

    • SSHs 25xIC
    • Imperial Walkers 25xIC
    • Low slow squats 25xIC
    • Squat pulses 15xIC (we miss ya, Shorty.  Quick fartsacking and show us how its done)
    • Peter Parkers 25xIC
    • Parker Peters 25xIC
    • Mountain Climbers 25xIC

Slow mosey to the bottom of the closer parking garage for a little Dora 1-2-3.  PAX paired up with each pair to finish off 100 merkins, 200 squats and 300 flutter kicks (QHC reminded the PAX that he wanted to see no whiskeydicking: push your lower backs into the ground, you know at that sweet spot your Ms like you to rub before the real #WifePleasers, and keep the legs straight: work your core): as one PAX did 1-2-3, the other climbed the stairwell to the top then down the other stairwell; flap jack, etc.

Slow mosey to the bottom of the ramp.  OYO, each PAX moseyed to the top of the parking lot with 5 burpees at each end on the way up for a total–if QHC can count–of a meager 55 burpees.  Rats, should have added an extra burpee for 56: a good luck number.

Just two Minutes of Mary: LBCs 56xIC (PAX, it’s goal: next year, 57xIC, etc.  Can’t wait for double-respect  Jadaveon, YSR, Amnesia: QHC will probably be six feet under when you get there, but don’t let me slow you down).  Then the PAX moseyed back to the flags for Count-Off, Name-O-Rama, Intentions, and Prayers to be wise, generous and kind.

See You in the Gloom, Jingle Vader

  • Shoulders, shoulders, and more shoulders!

Knowing weeks in advance that I had the Q today I tried to plan my workouts accordingly.  I have been having some annoying sharp pain in my knee over the past few months that only bothers me when I run.  So, I thought today would be a good day to work on some upper body…particularly the shoulders!  A short disclaimer at 5:30 and we were off!
Mosey to grassy area right off of the track
    SSH x 20/PETER PARKER x 20/PARKER PETERx 20/MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS x 20
Mosey to row bars – 4 groups
ROWS were the count x 20/MERKIN/WIDE MERKINS/DIAMOND MERKINS (Thought we might get in two sets of these but after the first round decided against it!)
Mosey to cinder blocks – 56’s
(Increasing reps starting at 5 count all the way up to 11 count for a total of 56 reps per exercise – run/walk to next light in between sets)
BURPEE PRESSES (There was lots of moaning and groaning about this one!)
    CURLS
    KETTLE BELL SWINGS
    SHOULDER PRESSES
Return cinder blocks and mosey back to the flag (Not enough time left for Mary!)
Count off, Name-o-rama, announcements, and a prayer to lift up the family of Darth Visor.
Thankful for F3 and the opportunity to lead!  Until next time…
Saban, Reluctant Yankee, Seaman, Bartman, Tube Steak, Landing Strip, Gabrielle, Sandbar, Moriah, Jadeveon, Roots, Nip Tuck, Schlitz, and one other?
  • No counting before 6am.

Started with a jog a block uptown down St. Charles and back across the street, and circled up in front of Tulane… and then things went down hill.

This was my second time Qing–and my first go at it was a year ago, so I probably should have prepared a bit more than I did.  In any case, I had just rolled out of bed and my wheels weren’t yet spinning, and I totally botched the count on the first exercise: side, straddle, hop.  So there the whole group was counting along and exercising away, without my count.  I pulled it together by around 12 side, straddle, hops and we rolled on from there.  The rest of the warm-up included: imperial walkers, squats, mountain climbers, etc.

Then, we moseyed over to the corner of Loyola, at St. Charles and Calhoun.  We did two rotations of four stations on each grassy landing: merkins, burpies, russian twists, and crab cakes.

This was followed by a sprint on your own down Calhoun to Freret, where we turned to the parking lot on Freret.  After doing some modified Nolan Ryans (specifically, Captain Morgans) while the six arrived, we broke into two lines and did Indian runs to the top.

At the top of the lot we broke into pairs, with one partner exercising while the other ran down and back up the stairs.  The exercises included 50 burpies, 150 lunges, and 250 LBCs.

Then, it was back through Loyola’s campus to the flag.

  • This Birdcage ain’t big enough for the both of us

28+ gathered for the Birdcage in the thick, sticky gloom of Audubon Park.  Men of various shapes, sizes and ages – but all with the purpose and drive to get out of the fartsack and better themselves and others. F3 is a wonderful thing… so here we go…

    Thang:

Around golf course parking lot and back to the field for some warm up. All exercises 15 count in cadence:

    • SSH
    • Mountain Climbers
    • Squats
    • Parker Peters
    • Wide arms

Mosey down Oak Alley to pick up some coupons

Mosey back to running path and partner up

    • A: Run a suicide of light poles (3)
    • B: AMRAP exercise

    Round 1: chest press

    Round 2: curls

    Round 3: goblet squats

Round 4: merkins on your block

    Round 5: LBCs

Mosey back to fountain to return the coupons

Squats while we wait for the 6

Circle up for some Mary (15 count in cadence):

    • Russian Twists
    • Flutters
    • Oblique crunches (R/L)
    • J-Los

Back to the flag with 5 burpees to finish up.

    NMM

Big crowd this morning, with plenty of visitors from outside of Uptown…I guess everyone came to see the Biebs (this week’s scheduled Q). Hope my lead didn’t disappoint.  I had a bad Plantar Fasciitis flare up on Monday so wanted to keep the mileage low and also keep the group together…I think we did both and everyone got a solid workout in. (If not, please email me for a refund.)

Funny situation when we got back to the shovel flag: a group of guys were circled up doing merkins at the behest of another guy in the middle standing there barking orders with a pit bull on a leash.  Looked like a highly suspect college-aged group – perhaps even some kind of pledge training, but either way upon seeing 29 sweaty, dirt-covered middle aged men running up they quickly vacated our shovel flag area and didn’t heed our invitation to join F3 (“it’s free and we’ll push you harder than that joker”).  Something for everyone I guess.

Welcome Cowboy from F3 Puget Sound and (renamed) FNG Schlitz from Dufossat St, by way of Milwaukee.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead boys.

    Until next time…

    Xo,

    Mariah

  • Schlitz squiggy? Squiggy Schlitz? Schlitz and giggles?

El wire had a sick kid so I stepped up to not only write his backblast but actually Q his beatdown…that I had to create.  I think I just got Tom Sawyered again!

We ran to the soccer goal in front of the zoo.  At that field we did a standard circle:

SSH x20, Imperial Walker Squats x 20, Mtn Climbers x 20 and Dying Bugs x 20  all IC

Then we moseyed to the field by the river at the FLY.

At the river view we did a mini-ring of fire.  We circled up in plank.  Bear Crawl left, bear crawl to the middle, bear crawl back, bear crawl right, bear crawl to the middle, bear crawl back.  We finished here with 15 Nolan Ryans L and R.  We also did 10 Hip Dips L and R x 10.  OYO.

Then we got up and moseyed to Monkey Hill.  At the Hill we did a merkin regression.  We did 20 merks on the other side of hill, back and did 18, then cross over for 16 on down to 2.   Heard some trains and decided we needed to quick mosey across the train tracks.   It was run as fast as possible to the train tracks, then once there PAX had to do Bonnie Blairs while they waited for the 6.

Another 1/2 mile mosey to the LABYRINTH.    Instead of plank and wait we did LBCs and LBTs and wait. At the labyrinth we did 20 left leg step ups IC, 10 Irkins, 20 right leg step ups IC, 10 Dirkins, 15 left leg bulgarian split lunch, 15 right leg bulgarian split lunge, 20 dips OYO.

Set up for some MARY at the Labyrinth.  We did some Dying Roaches, attempted some donkey kicks but it was too hard to do on the bricks, did some LOW COUNTRY CRAB, we did some Russian Twist to finish.

The beatdown finished with HORSES to the barn/flag.

Struggled with naming our FNG from Wisco – we went with Squiggy from Laverne and Shirley (tv show look it up)  I have been having second thoughts – want something with Schlitz.  Schlitz his pants, Wisco Schlitz, Schlitz the bed, Schlitzy- Glitz.  Just thinking out loud.  I am pretty sure that squiggy isn’t going to stick. Schlitz and Giggles?

  • Monday With Macdeuce

Pre Thang:  Third day of Fall and just another  muggy Monday morning in NOLA and the pax gathered slowly…  Yankee showed up with Shark Bait from Carmel and the regulars rolled in one at a time. We also had an appearance by FNG Carlton, who had posted twice already but left early both times and still hadn’t been named. At 05:30 a couple more stragglers came in hot and we were off into the gloom with a solid 19.

The Thang:  Mosey around by the golf club house and over to the base of the bandstand for warmup COP: SSH, Mtn. Climber, Imperial Walker, Plank Jack x 25 IC.

Dirty Macdeuce:  Run the loop(oak alley to the track, right to the parking lot and back around to bandstand. Approx. 1/4 Mile), Then perform the prescribed exercise x 15 IC.

Round 1: Merkin, Squat, American Hammer

Round 2: Left Staggered Merkin, Monkey Humper, Real Freddie

Round 3: Right Staggered Merkin, Lunge, Flutter Kick(We lost Carlton again at this point.)

Round 4: Wide Merkin, Low Slow Squat, LBC

One more lap and mosey into the shelter for some bench work: LLSUx 15, Derkins x 15, RLSU x 15, Dips x 15

Mosey over to the grass for some stretching and head to the flag.

    COT w/ shoutout by YHC.

    Good Times!

    Roots

T Claps to Carlton for giving it another shot. If he makes it through a full workout, I move we name him Rhoda or Mary Tyler Moore. Those who grew up in the 70’s will get it…

  • 100 is the number!

When Mulligan had to back out of Q’ing, I jumped at the chance to take the Q , especially knowing it was going to be my 100th F3 workout this year.  I arrived early and stealthily unloaded the 6 cinder blocks I have been toting around in the back of my Suburban onto the lawn behind “Touchdown Jesus”(surprise for later).    I was dreading this day, as I knew at the end of the workout, I had a burpee bet, with Willie, to pay off for our Fantasy League game, loser does the score differential in burpees, Let’s just say it wasn’t close and the number was 61 burpees!  OUCH!

The PAX began to assemble at the front of the park and at 5:30 we were ready to go.  The Intro and disclaimer were given as well as the Announcement that this was my 100th beatdown.  I don’t think anyone could believe I actually keep track of that, but I do.  So off we went for a Mosey down to Walnut across St. Charles and back down to the nicest patch of grass Uptown, the Loyola “U” for the Warm-Up.

    Warm-Up – 100 Reps of warm- up

    SSH x20 IC

    Imperial Walkers x20 IC

    Mountain Climbers x20 IC

    Hillbillies x20 IC

    Sun Gods – 10 Fwd, 10 Rev

    Thang 1 -100 Rep Circuit

Did a count-o-rama to determine we had 25 PAX divided up in to 5 groups of 5,  Five Stations setup around the lawn

    Station 1  – Dips – this was the count – 20 reps

    Station 2 – Monkey Humpers – AMRAP

Station 3 – SURPRISE WE HAVE BLOCKS AT WPM – Curls for the Girls – AMRAP

Station 4 – Low Slow Squats – AMRAP

    Station 5  – Plank Jacks – AMRAP

Finished first round, that was fun, Let’s RINSE AND REPEAT!

20 count by King Kong, and lets Mosey to the Mountain.

Thang 2 – Dora 1,2,3, up the Mountain

Run up the mountain with stops  to exercise at each turn-around.

Partner up, Exercise are 100 Merkin, 200 Bobby Hurley’s, 300 LBC’s, combined effort

    At each turnaround:

PAX 1  would do 10 Merkin, 20 Bobby Hurley’s and 30 LBC’s, for the count

PAX 2 would do Shoulder taps during the Merkins, Al Gore during the Bobby Hurley’s and Flutter Kicks during the LBC’s.   Flap Jack exercises at each turnaround.

10 Stops on the way up gets us to our required counts.

This took longer than expected, and as the last groups arrived to the top of the mountain I realized it was already 6:11.  No time for anything else…

Down the stairs and a quick Mosey back to the Flag.

    COT

Count-o-rama, Name-o rama, NO FNG’s,  Good!   I don’t want to hear anymore Mumble chatter about my bad naming skills.   My prayers were answered as I got a reprieve till next week from the burpee bet, as Willie had to leave as soon as we were done and didn’t make it to the COT.  Now I have to dread it for another week.

Announcements:  A group is going to Mobile to help with the new AO there on Sat  anyone is welcome to come along.   Coffeeteria at PJ’s after.

I thanked everyone for their support and motivation they provide me every work out.  I never could have lost the weight I have, 40lbs and gotten to where I am, 100 workouts so far this year, with out all of y’all pushing me every day and holding me accountable.    Thanks again!

Special Intentions for Rudy’s family, and an HNJ mom fighting the good fight against cancer.

My usual , still out of breath, Prayer!  AMEN!

Thanks, as always for the opportunity to lead!  I always enjoy it!

    SYITG!

  • 110 Floors 9/11 Remembrance Stair Climb

Well – I wanted to sign us up for a Stair Climb to commemorate 9/11 so a few months ago I contacted a group that does one at the Hyatt.  They told me only first responders can do it – so I decided we would do our own stair climb at our Friday spot at WPM.

The 11o Floors were the number of floors that First Responders and Firefighters climbed to get to people at the top of WTC in NYC on 9/11/2001.  I can’t imagine doing that in full gear with the stress of the scenario playing out – not to mention the heat and the weight of the gear.  Tclaps to Landing Strip, Peppa and Hawg for bringing their RUCK gear.  I think one more PAX brought their gear.

We did a quick MOSEY to the base of WPM and immediately got to work trying to get our 16 trips up.

It was much harder than I thought it would be.  I actually only got to 14 complete reps.

All of the PAX in the first stairwell completed the activity.

Tclaps to BAM from Winston Salem who actually did a stair climb on 9/11.  So he did it twice!

We had our guy Carlton post again but then vanish mid workout – I suggest Copperfield for his F3 name–

For he is a master of illusion.  (or perhaps GOB pronounced JOB)

Thanks again for letting me attempt this reflection.  Someone gave me an idea for doing that at Champion Square next year and I think that might be a better location.

    See you in the gloom!

    RY

  • A Michigander pays his debts…

With cinder blocks dominating the past and burpees in yhc imminent future this gloom must deviate.

A simple mosey out and about, the pax had no interest in a pearl in the pond so we continued on to the holy grass.

Arm Circles forward & reverse 10×10
    Mountain Climbers x20
    Peter Parkers x20

Mosey to the mountain, back pedal up the inclines and sprint the straightaways. On the riverside turns Russian Twist, lakeside turns Leg Lifts with a thrust, good idea @Fracsac! First round 10 each increasing by 10 at each level. At the end total came to 150 Russian Twists, and 150 leg lifts with a thrust.

At the top of the last incline we posted for some angled work
    Inclined LBCs x20
    Decline Mericans x 10
    Declined Pickle Pounders x20

Mosey back to the bottom and to the benches
    RLSU x 20
    LLSU x 20
    Dips with a hold x10
    RLPU x 20
    LLPU x 20

    Mosey back to the flag

We had a new Holy Name dad, Chuck Smith, who is a ND alum. Unlike his fellow alum whom yhc owes a debt of burpees (41) Rudy didn’t show up so I got to take out my angst about last weekend’s ND vs M tilt and dubbed Chuck, Smick Chick.
