  • Don’t Lose Left Eye

After losing Left Eye last week, I was offered redemption. Left Eye saw I had the Q at Rock City, and was kind enough to give me another shot. 24 men arrived in the dark gloom of Pontiff, without lights, for a beatdown in the dark and damp. Bogey suggested we all hold hands and sing Kumbaya during the workout so no man gets left behind. Not a bad idea… The usual disclaimer and off we go.

We moseyed to the usual spot by the rocks for our warm-up COP.

    • SSH x 20 IC
    • IW x 20 IC
    • Windmills x 10 IC
    • Arm circles 10 forward 10 backwards IC
    • LSS x 20 IC
    • Mountain climbers x 20 IC.

Grab a rock and head to the track. We lined up on the 20 yard line of the football field for a rock circuit. I kept one eye on Left Eye the whole time…

    • Shoulder press x 15 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock curls x 15 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock rows x 15 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock squats x 15 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • By this time, Cowbell could see what was coming…
    • Shoulder press x 10 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock curls x 10 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock rows x 10 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock squats x 10 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Shoulder press x 5 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock curls x 5 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock rows x 5 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.
    • Rock squats x 5 IC, sprint to the end zone and back.

Next we bear crawled from the 20 to the end zone, 20 Merkins in the end zone, and lunge walked back to the 20. Next circuit.

    • Chest press x 20 IC
    • Flutter kicks with rock held high x 20 IC
    • Chest press x 20 IC
    • Hello dolly with rock held high x 20 IC

Then we moved our rocks out to the 40 yard line, and teamed up in Pax of 3 for Merkin relays. 40 yard dash, followed by 15 Merkins, until the other Pax got back to you. 3 rounds of 15 Merkins, followed by 3 rounds of 10 Merkins, for 6 rounds total.

    Circle up for some Mary.

    • LBCs x 20 IC
    • Box cutters x 20 IC
    • Dying cockroach x 20 IC
    • Penguins x 20 IC

Return your beloved rock back to the pile and run back to the flag for a percent finish. (Maybe 1 minute late according to Triple Shift, but his watch must be wrong.) Count-off, name-o-rama, announcements, intentions, and a prayer. I am grateful I did not lose another Pax member today. We were 24 strong throughout. Thank you for letting me lead.

  • 34 year Old Virgin

Last Thursday at Okwata Rudy being Rudy suggested I sign up to Q.  At first, I said to myself “not going to happen” then over the course of the day I decided to look up the Q sheet just to see when the next Q spot was open- thinking it would be about 5-8 weeks out. Not the case, there was an opening the next week (today). I decided to rip the band aide off and pop my Q cherry and sign-up for my VQ.

18 PAX met out on the banks of Okwata with 15 mph winds whipping a nice cool 50 degrees through our bodies. Considering this is the 2nd official day of spring I hope the cold weather is past us. The 20 degree weather swings from 5:30am to Noon is getting old.

We started off with a Mosey to the grass by Landry’s for warm-ups. Probably one of the only time’s you’ll ever hear the restaurant Landry’s come out of my mouth.  The warm ups consisted of:

    25 – SSH IC
    15 – Should Taps IC
15 – Arm Circles Front IC
15 – Arm Circle Reverse IC
    15 – Plank Jacks IC
    15 – Peter Parkers IC
    15 – Mountain Climbers IC

In full disclosure the above workouts above were “the plan” not sure what the final counts were. Never realized how hard it was to count when the Q. Much respect for my past Q’s.  Also, a lot of mumble chatter about having to get back to your feet for arm circles and then back down again for plank jacks might have to incorporate more of this in future Q’s since everyone enjoyed it so much.

My novice and out of breath warm-up Counting self, decided a 30 second count down was a good idea – After some grumbling – Kuch quickly counted to 10 (thanks for the help!) and we then proceeded to split into 2 groups for an Indian Run back to the Hill. At the Hill we partnered up for a little “bern”. One partner did a Bernie Sanders up the Hill and run back down (then switch) until the below exercises were complete.

    50 – Burpees
    100 – Merkins
    200 – Monkey Humpers
    300 – LBC

Now that our legs were nice and “berning” we crossed the street to complete running to the street light and post up for 5 merkin’s X 3 lights. The goal was to hit 3 street lights that were a decent length from each other, however I didn’t realize there were two sets of street lights one’s on the left and one’s on the right. My intentions were the left (the distance one’s) however we improvised and completed the exercise. We circled up for Mary where we did:

    20 Flutter Kicks IC
    10 Turtle Crunchs IC
    10 Hello Dolly IC
10 Big Boy Sit Ups OYO

Again, this was “the plan” not sure what the final counts were as I was once again out of breath from counting. Definitely need to work on that for next time!

With 3 mins to Spare we Moseyed back to the Flag where Mahatma suggested a little ring of Fire. 6:15am came and we circled up. 18 PAX were at the AO. We welcomed a new FNG “The Greek”.  Congrats to Two Yutes on making 10 years of marriage!

It was an honor to lead this group.

  • Maybe we should sit around & talk about our feelings

It was chilly, rainy & dark when I got out of bed on Saturday morning, so I was dragging my feet a little to get dressed. On the Mumblechatter, Tool & Kimchi posted messages to get the PAX motivated to get out of bed & come post. While the LV fellas (Kuch, Half Nelson, Abacus & High Rise) & myself were clown carring to the AO, we bounced some workout ideas off of each other. One idea was to avoid the rain altogether & head strait to Navarre café so that the PAX could all drink coffee & share their respective feelings with one another in lieu of working out in the cold/rain. Once I saw Mahatma arrive at the workout, I knew this option would be a tough sell, so I proceeded to commence the beatdown.

Warmup: We mosey’d to the pavilion by CBS; circled up, and then proceeded to do the following in cadence:

    • side straddle hops – 20
    • imperial squat walkers – 20
    • plank jacks – 20
    • high knees – 20

Next, we split into 2 groups. Group 1 moved to 1 side of the pavilion, and group 2 moved to the other side:

    Group 1:

    • 10 inchworm burpees
    • 50 big boy sit ups
    • 100 seal jacks

    Group 2:

    • 10 regular burpees
    • 50 dips on the benches
    • 200 shoulder taps

Group 1 did their exercises in cadence, and then made sure that Group 2 was aware that they finished their exercises first. We then switched sides / exercises. For this round, Group 2 did their exercises in cadence (loudly to jab back at Group 1), and Group 2 finished first. Group 1 pointed out that Group 2 did LBC’s instead of big boy sit ups, and that’s why they finished first. This was in part (and by, in part, I mean 100%) the Q’s fault, as I mistakenly said LBC’s to Group 2 when giving the instructions for round 2.

Next we attempted to do a long jump / inchworm burpee combo, but it was too wet/slick in the pavilion, so we shut that down and mosey’s back to the fountain. Once at the fountain, we did an interval exercise where the PAX did 1 box jump on the fountain, ran to the museum steps, bunny hopped up the steps, did 1 merkin at the top of the steps, then ran down the steps back to the fountain. Once at the fountain, the PAX did 2 box jump, ran to the museum steps, bunny hopped up the steps, did 2 merkins at the top of the steps, then ran down the steps back to the fountain. We did this until we got to 10 box jumps / 10 merkins.

Next, the PAX mosey’d to the side of the museum & proceeded to do the following:

    • Group 1 – people’s chair on the wall
    • Group 2 – 200 Rocky Balboas (timer)

Once Group 2 finished the Rocky Balboas, we switched and had Group 1 do the Rocky Balboas & Group 2 lean against the wall to do the people’s chair. At one point, Rudy questioned Mahatma’s cadence technique while he was leading Group 2 in doing the Rocky Balboas, but ultimately the math checked out & we proceeded on with the workout

Next, we mosey’d to the grass & did the following:

    • Lunge walk / inchworm burpee combo from Tree 0 to Tree 1 & back
    • Bear Crawl from Tree 0 to Tree 2; do 31 squats (not sure where the number 31 came from, it just felt like the right amount); and then Bear Crawl back

Lastly, we headed back to the fountain & did the following in cadence:

    • Irkins – 21
    • Dips – 16
    • Left leg high knee step up – 21
    • Right leg high knee step up – 21
    • Dirkins – 16
    • Plank jacks on museum steps – 31 (there’s that 31 again for no particular reason. Classic)

Once completed, we mosey’d to the flag for the count off, name-o-rama, announcements, intentions & prayer. Thanks for posting on Saturday morning, fellas. I enjoyed it!

  • 43 going on 44

23 PAX posted in the the dark at Rock City. The effects of the time change were felt as I tried to wake up and get ready to make the trek to Metairie. It was still so dark I could barely see who all had shown up in the dark gloom. At 5:30 The announcement and disclaimer were given and off we moseyed to the grassy area near the rocks for Warm-up.

  • Improv at The Foundry

YHC has not been extremely active on the Q sign up sheet.  This is kind of been disappointing b/c being the Q is the only payment that F3 truly request.   After so much that has been given to YHC, he feels that he owes much more.   Of course, he has his excuses, but if he were being completely honest, there is no excuse.  If you can post, you can Q.   When today’s scheduled Q did not show, YHC seized the opportunity to lead and to pay back F3.

  • Sometimes You Gotta Call an Audible

I was looking forward to Q’ing Rock City for the first time, so I took some time over the weekend to plan out a beatdown for the PAX. The beatdown was to take place on the track & field inside Pontiff Park; however, due to the rain that came down over the weekend & Monday morning, the track/field were both too #moist for us to use that day. As a result, I had to call an audible & come up with something else for us to do on the fly. Fortunately, on the car ride to Rock City that morning Kuch had mentioned to me that the track/field were too wet to use on Friday as well when he went to the Uptowner, and he told me that they had used the jogging path instead since it was a good bit dryer. So with that fresh in my mind, I issued the disclaimer to the PAX & then the workout commenced.

    • Warm Up: Mosey on the jogging path to the shelter about 250 meters away. Then we lined up around the perimeter of the shelter and did:
    • 25x Side Straddle Hops
    • 20x imperial squat walkers
    • 20x grass grabbers
    • 21x arm circles (11 forward, 10 backward)
    • The Thang: We mosey’d from the shelter back to the rock pile, and then each PAX grabbed a rock. The Pax was then split up into 2 groups:
    • Group 1: ran 200 meters out & then 200 meters back to the rock pile
    • Group 2: while Group 1 was running, Group 2 was doing the following circuit:
    • 5 standing bench press with the rock
    • 10 curls with the rock
    • 15 shoulder press with the rock
    • 20 squats with the rock
    • _
    • When Group 1 was done with the 400 meter run, we switched, and then Group 2 ran the 400 meters while Group 1 did the circuit. Each group did the 400 meter run & the circuit 3 times. After that, we changed it up a bit and had:
    • Group 1: run 200 meters out & 200 meters back, but this time it was an Indian Run with each PAX carrying their rock during the run
    • Group 2: while Group 1 was doing the Indian Run with their rocks, Group 2 did merkins using their rocks. 10 merkins with the left hand on the rock, and then 10 merkins with the right hand on the rock, and then rinse & repeat as many times as possible before Group 1 got back. Then we switched & had Group 2 do the Indian Run with the rock & Group 1 do the rock merkins
    • After that, we circled up on the grass & did the following exercises in cadence:
    • 15x bench press with the rock
    • 20x bent over rows with the rock
    • 15x American Hammer (with or without the rock)
    • 20x Rocky Balboa’s using the rock
    • 10x burpees (no rock)

After these exercises were done, Bogey pointed out that time was winding down, so we returned our rocks and Mosey’d back to the flag. Fortunately for the PAX, we still had 2 minutes left when the six reached the flag, so we each did 10 inchworm burpees on our own & then according to the $5.99 watch I ordered off of Amazon last week, we had reached 6:15am (however; according to Rudy’s watch, it was only 6:14am, so he was grumbling that the beatdown had ended prematurely. Classic Rudy, am I right).

COT: Next we did the count-off, the name-o-rama, & announcements. Hand Grenada had a birthday last week, but the PAX decided a good old fashioned pat on the back would suffice in lieu of having the PAX sing happy birthday to him in unison. Next we did intentions & then closed with a prayer. Thanks for letting me lead, fellas. Enjoyed it!

  • The Muscleship Launch

“Without continual growth and progress. such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” —Benjamin Franklin

The Muscleship blasted off in solid fashion this Saturday, thanks in part to the 16 PAX flight crew that hopped on board for the maiden voyage.  This new workout and AO was strategically engineered to accomodate the every growing number of men eager to start their Saturdays with a F3 beatdown.  Several guys got in some RRR miles before blast off…T-claps!  As the clock approached 6:30, it was good to see several reguklars trickle in and a few koters to boot.  After a brief description of what was in store, and of course the disclaimer, we made our way over to the front of NOMA to get started.

Warmup Part 1: IWx20, WMx20, LSSx20, SSAC (Sixty Second Arm Circles, from the F3 website…T-plank Left ACx15, LBCx15, T-plank Right ACx15), capped off with IPSWx20.  In the middle of this we noticed The Mothership trying to invade our territory in the nearby field so we upped the volume on cadence in an effort to claim dominance.  Before departing, YHC asked the PAX to start thinking of some good jokes, hoping Bogey would be the star of the show.

Warmup Part 2:   Short mosey to the banks of The Big Lake for some Planking and Merkins.  We lined up all holding a high plank, then 5 Merkins, then a joke, then 4 Merkins, joke, 3 Merkins, joke, 2 Merkins….at this point The Mothership did a fly by so our last joke was centered around them, then 1 last Merkin.

Foundry:  Short mosey to The Foundry where YHC realized the PAX was too large for plan A so we settled for Plan B:  Split up with group #1 doing 3 rounds of PIMPS (timer) near the pull-up bars and group #2 doing BLIMPS AMRAP in the grass.  Flip flop with a “pimp daddy” being chosen in each group to be the timer. Lots of intense stuff here with very little opportunity for small talk.

Lake-North Side:  Next stop was another stretch of shoreline for Inchworm Burpess x10, joke, x8, joke(s), x6, dirty joke, x4, another dirty joke, x2, maybe a final joke.

Lake-South Side:  After a pit stop at the water hydrant to hydrate, we made our way over to the raised ledge along The Big Lake track.  We rotated duties with mutiple PAX running cadence and various counts for LLSUx20, Dipsx20, RLSUx20, Derkins x15…breather….rinse and repeat with the highlight being Bogey and Abacus peforming a duet in tandem.

Lelong Drive for Cinco de Cardio:  Here we gatherded for five 1-minute rounds of various cardio-rich exercises which proved to be much more manly than the moseying and frolicking that our counterparts were doing with The Mothership.  We dug deep and did Semi-Circle Mountain Climbers, Rocky Balboas, Partner Plank Slaps, IPSW, and Groiners as the finale.

One minute left so back to the flag to call it a morning.  COT, annoucements, prayer, and some admiration for the new steel encased shovel flag that may be worthy of it’s own name.  Also, YHC thanked the PAX for posting and making The Muscleship launch a success.  YHC wasn’t sure what to expect knowing so many of us enjoy and look forward to The Mothership each week and trying to split that up is no easy feat.  The F3 vatican has always encouraged an “addition by division” concept when trying to grow so it was good to see all the PAX on board with that.  YHC also mentioned a workout several years ago where a fellow PAX Q’d with some new exercises and routines, which worked well, and after talked about one of the strengths of F3 is that the group always supports those trying new things, typically with little or no heckling from the peanut gallery.  Thanks to the PAX for pushing hard and helping to make it a good one!

  • Tribute to Terabyte at the Mothership

F3 lost one of its own earlier in the week. Terabyte was a caring leader that pushed himself, and inspired other pax to become better. He will be missed.

YHC stated that we will carry a flag for our fallen pax as we trudged through the AO. We will sweat, push ourselves, and feel pain. In this way, we will honor him, ’cause that’s what we do. 40 men, including 3 FNG’s, were ready to go.

Brief disclaimer, then pick up the flag and mosey to the Great lawn for the warmup

SSH IC x 52 (Terabyte was only 52)
    IW IC x 15
    Grass Grabbers IC x 10

    Peter Parker IC x 20
    Shoulder Taps IC x 20
    Parker Peter IC x 20
    Mountain Climber IC x 20
Recover, pick up the flag, and mosey….

Mosey to the Tree line near NOMA
YHC asked how may burpees left? We have smart Pax! 12 it is!
12 Burpees OYO which brings us to 52. But that doesn’t mean we can’t have more Burpees!

Mosey to the Fountain at NOMA
    Dips IC x 20
RL Step Up IC x 15
    Incline Merkin IC x 10
LL Step Up IC x 15

    Dips IC x 10
RL Step Up IC x 15
    Decline Merkin IC x 10
LL Step Up IC x 10

    Mosey to the tree line
Sprint to first tree and back – 5 burpees
Sprint to second tree and back – 5 burpees – plank and wait for the six

Starting at first tree, Burpee Broad Jump to third tree.

YHC requested Triple Shift to help explain the next exercise. Triple Shift had previously introduced the Genuflect and YHC wanted to incorporate it in. Genuflect from third tree back to first tree.
Left knee down, right knee down, left knee up, right knee up, then lunge walk one step. Now do two genuflects followed by two lunge steps, then three……etc.

Mosey back to the Great Lawn for Mary:
    LBC’s IC x 30
    Tin Snips IC x 20
    Hello Dolly IC x 20
    Flutter Kicks IC x 20
    American Hammer IC x 10

    Plank for one minute
Recover, pick up the flag, and return to the other flags for the COT

Count off, Name-O-Rama, Announcement, and ended with a prayer.

Welcome Bingo Knight, Offsides, and CareBear! Great job on the EH’ing guys! We have had big numbers at the AO’s lately, let’s keep it going!

The Celebration of Life for Terabyte, aka Sidney Modica, will be held on Monday January 14th where visitation begins at 0900 with service to follow at 1030 at:
    Victory Fellowship
    5708 Airline Hwy
    Metairie, LA 70003

If you have a flag or a ruck sack, please bring. Terabyte loved being part of F3, and we loved having him.

  • Championship Monday

    Championship Monday

    Clemson vs Alabama
    January 7th, 2019

For may this was just a normal Monday. For YHC, this is Championship Monday! The Alabama Crimson Tide vs. that orange team in South Carolina. Living in New Orleans, I have come to obtain a lot of respect for the boys in Baton Rouge, but at Rock City, there seems to be a lot of mumble chatter about the Fighting Irish. The Irish live by one motto:

Image result for work like a champion everyday

Unfortunately, playing like a champion at times gets you a point in the loss column, but hey at least they look good doing it. Alabama, on the other hand, has learned to be champions in everything they do, every day. Championships don’t start on the football field. Champions try to push themselves in everything. Coach Saban said it best:

Image result for work like a champion everyday alabama

So today the disclaimer--work like a champion. For YHC, that ended at the warm-up.

    Warm-Up

    SSH X 18…no make that 20.

Hillbillies X 0 (now this where the train really derailed) Q can’t call a cadence to save his life. “Must be from Bama,” they said.

    Mountain Climbers X 25

Arm Circles X 10 (forwards and backwards)

The important thing to remember is that champions sometimes have to take one on the chin first. Like in 2009, when the #1 ranked Alabama had to block a field goal at the end of the game to beat unranked Tennessee 12-10.

Or when the 2011 Alabama team got cheated out of a 9-6 game at home against LSU (I still argue OJ Howard caught that ball on the goal line)…

Or when the 2012 Alabama team had to recover from getting sucker punched by Johnny Football 29-24 at home…

Or when the 2015 Alabama team lost to Ole Miss in week three 43-37…

Or when the 2017 Alabama team lost to that cow college in the Iron Bowl…

You get it. Sometimes champions get sucker punched, but it is not how you start it is how you finish. So let’s look beyond a botched warm-up and move on to a championship style beatdown.

    The Thang

Grab a rock and mosey to the football field for an extended version of Dora. Pair up. As a team, complete the following:

    Curls X 250

    Squats X 200

    Rows X 150

    Shoulder Presses X 100

    Burpees X 50

One Pax member works while the other Pax member runs a 40-yard dash and back.

Cowbell and KimChi finished early rewarding all who finished 100 LBCs.

    Post-Thang

The PAX really did not like this idea. “I thought that was the workout,” they moaned. (Maybe in Gainesville or Knoxville but not here).

Bear crawl or lunge walk 20 yards and do 10 merkins, 20 more yards 10 merkins. (Rinse and Repeat).

Return Rock and mosey back to flag.

“We still have two minutes. On your six.”

    Flutter Kicks X 20

    Penguins X 25

“We still have 30 seconds. I paid for 45 minutes,” said Rev Sox

COT- Lord Jesus, allow us to seek you in everything we do. Make us the husbands, fathers, and coworkers that you have called us to be. In Jesus name, Amen.

Gentlemen, thank you once again for allowing me to lead. I could not do the things I do without the support of my F3 Family.
