  • No Cowbell, No Problem

The clock ticked steadily towards 5:30.  The growing herd of PAX started to get restless.  Mutterings of “Who’s the Q?” were heard.  YHC had checked the sheet the night before – Cowbell was on the list.  Surely Cowbell would have also checked the list, or his email.  Right?

    Wrong.

5:30 arrives.  No Cowbell.  But the PAX wait on no man, and the Workout must go on.  So YHC grabs the Disclaimer, and leads the PAX off to the rock pile – with the warning that others better be planning their own part of the workout.

    Rudy – The Warmup

Typical Rudy start. SSH, Smurf Jacks, Monkey Humpers, IW, then Plank-o-rama with Peter Parker, Mountain Climber, Parker Peter.

    Go grab a rock.

    Mahatma – The Ruck

Line up in 2 lines for a Ruck.  Follow Mahatma’s lead.  Start with the rock held on one side (NO RESTING ON THE SHOULDER).  Then up above your head.  Then to the other side.  Ruck down to the tree line.

    Line Up and Partner Up.

    • PAX 1: Carry Rock #1 out about 30 yards.  Bear crawl back.
    • PAX 2: Simultaneously start bear crawling out to Retrieve said rock and return it.
    • PAX 1: On return, grab Rock #2 and carry out about 60 yards.  Sprint back.
    • PAX 2: On return with Rock #1, sprint out to retrieve Rock #2 and carry back.

    Rinse and repeat.

    Bogey – The Slllllllooooooowwwwww Count

All exercises in slow count cadence.  Up in 4, Down in 4.  x20 (or so) each

    • Curls
    • Straight Out in front (ok, this one was “not easy”).
    • Rows
    • Squats

    Pai Gow – The DangerFEST

Line up.  Be watchful – its time for rock throwing!

    • 5 Burpees
    • Throw rock, bear crawl to it.  Throw it again.  Try to avoid bear-crawling PAX in the vicinity.  Bear crawl some more.  Until Tree #1.
    • 10 Merkins.
    • Throw rock, lunge walk to it.  Repeat. Until Tree #2.
    • 20 Shoulder Press.
    • Return following roughly the same pattern.  Or we may have gone out to Tree #3 for another set of exercises before the return.  Sorry, YHC memory is faulty, caused by high humidity, high sweat, and high fear of falling rocks.

King Kong – Work them Abs

Circle Up.  King Kong runs us through some Core, while holding the rock.

    • American Hammer.  Twist that rock.
    • Scissor Kicks.  Keep the rock in the air.
    • Flutter Kick.  Keep the rock in the air.
    • One other set.

Then Mahatma led us on a Ruck back to the Rock Pile.  Then a final sprint back to the flag.

Walleye then took us home with the Count-off, Name-o-rama, Announcements and a closing Prayer.

  • Backblast – Catfish Saturday VQ (2018-07-14)

    Greetings folks,

Had a great workout this morning with Mr. Catfish’s Virgin Q.

Attendees:  Catfish, Rudy, Mahatma Ice, Da Parish, Reluctant Yankee, Cliff Notes, Tool, Babyface, Triple Shift, Fracsac, King King, Mambi, Woz, Gabrielle, Medulla Oblongata, Bogey, Cooch, Calliope, Jinglevader, Dewey, Pie Gow, Abacus, Moist, Belloq, Whoop, Two Yutes

Also had an FNG come in, who now has been officially christened as Beignet.  Turns out Beignet lives in Phoenix, so he will be bringing some N’awlins flavor back to his F3 group there.

    On to the workout:

Started with a mosey over to the Great Lawn for Side Straddle Hop, Peter Parkers, Parker Peters, Plank Jacks, Imperial Walkers

Moved to side of great lawn for a B.O.M.B.S. variant (50 burpees, 100 overhead claps, 150 merkins, 200 sit-ups, 250 squats).

Moseyed to the fountain for some dips, step-ups, and derkins.

Lined up and did 2 laps of indian run on the main road to the museum.

Moved to the field adjacent to the museum for a combo of lunges, bear crawls, duck walk, and burpees.  This involved lunging for two trees, then 5 burpees, bear crawl two trees, 5 burpees, then duck walking two trees, 5 burpees.  Rinse and repeat.

Moseyed back to flag for our CoT and naming of our FNG (beignet).

Thanks again to everyone for coming out.  27 strong is a hell of a way to do a Virgin Q!  Hope be able to do it again soon!

    Catfish

  • Back to the Roots

Too many moons ago I did my last Q at the Mothership.  My last Q was based on a book I had read the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  This time I wanted to focus on the roots of F3 a simple straight forward no frills beat-down.

    Announcements/Intentions/Prayer/Coffeteria/Bible Study

Welcome FNG – Quiche.  I think he was EH’d by the Wiz.

This work out paid subtle tribute to some of my favorite F3 beat downs.  First to Roots –   YHC was happy to see Roots make his way from Uptown and deliver the third shovel flag of the day.  My first workout was at the Birdcage with non other than OG Roots as the Q.  It was quiet, intense, and intimidating.  In other words it was awesome.  2nd to Douille –  who taught me that low plank Peter Parkers and Plank Jacks are possible (there were doubters today).   Finally to Maverick (somewhere on the Northshore) who previously took the pax to the pier for Jack Webs.  Thanks to last months ISI challenge I could complete 10 rounds this time.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

  • Boom Chuga Luga Luga Boom

    What rolls down stairs
    alone or in pairs,
    and over your neighbor’s dog?

Well the PAX would soon find out! With a tardy pushed we ventured into an uncharted sea of possibilities. In the shadow of the Wolfpack Mountain we sojourned into the quads of Tulane.

A warm up of Pete Parkers x21, Burpees x10, Arm Circles Forward and Reverse x21, SSH x21.

We then moseyed on across Frerret to the Navy Building for pick up an FNG and our new toy

    What’s great for a snack,
    And fits on your back?
    It’s log, log, log

Courtesy of the Naval ROTC unit we borrowed their log the mornings workout.

We broke up into 3 groups of 5.

Next we proceeded to do an Indian run where group 3 picked up the log and chased down groups 1&2, pass the log to group 2 then sprinting ahead of group 1. We did this all the way down McCalister to the Riley Center where we turned around and continued back to the engineering quad. Running proved to be a challenge but each group organized themselves quickly. Tclaps Wiley, the shortest of the lot, quickly realized we need to line up tallest to shortest if we were going to achieve anything and that went a long way to get everyone moving better.

In the quad we rotated through using the log. First round we did log presses x 20, while the waiting groups did Mericans,
Second round we did log situps x20, while the waiting groups also did situps
Third and Fourth round was Log Shoulder Presses x 20, while the waiting groups did air presses during the 3rd round, and lunges during the 4th.

After wards Saban led a Circle of Marry while the 3rd group ran the log home to the Navy building. When the Pax were all reunited a quick pickle pounder and then mosey back to the flag.

At the circle we had 2 FNGs to add to Uptown vs the World Air Bag & Soup Kitchen

Inspiration for the workout came from the Art of Manliness which has posted the FM21-20 Army’s Field Manual for Log Training Manual from 1946

  • Quality over Quantity!

This was YHC’s first Q outside the friendly confines of Uptown.  So it was appropriate that it would be the Uptowner that would be YHC’s first Q in the great, big WORLD.  You can imagine my dismay when I pulled into the parking area with no other cars around.  Would this be a party of 1?  If you Q in an empty park, did it really happen?  Hold on….who is that walking over the train tracks?  None other than Hand Grenada!   Now we have a party!  But wait there’s more!  Here comes Fracsac to join this merry band.  The three musketeers it is.  Quality over quantity PAX.  Let’s get this party started…right?

    Circle up for Warm up,

    • Windmills X 15
    • Forward Arm Circles X15
    • Reverse Arm Circles X 15
    • Imperial Walkers X20
    • Hillbillies X20

We’re all warmed so let’s go to the rock pile and pick a small rock.  Oh wait, in my excitement of actually having PAX show up for my Q, I forgot the all important disclaimer.  So, disclaimer it is and then…

Circle up with small rock for Thang 1:

Block Webb –  1 merkin to 2 air presses with small rock increasing by 1 merkin and 2 air presses all the way up to 10 merkins and 20 air presses.  All OYO.  Needless to say we were feeling the burn in the shoulders by the end.

Let’s walk over and throw the small rock over the fence to the baseball field.  Back to the rock pile to pick a large rock

Take Large Rock walk around fence to field drop rock and walk to grab small rock from other side of field.  Lunge walk with small rock back to where we dropped big rock.

As we only had 3 Pax, we decided to combine forces for Thang 2

Flora 1-2-3 (aka Dora’s Nasty Sister)

    • 100 merkins – 10 merkins on large rock while others plank with foot on his large rock flapjack till complete
    • 200 LBC’s – 20 LBC’s with small rock while partners hold feet 6” off ground while holding small rock over chest flapjack till complete
    • 300 Goblet Squats – 25 goblet squats while partners hold a goblet squat in down position flapjack till complete

Next, circle up for Bear Crawl Ring of Fire                             c

    • Bear Crawl to Q yells halt. When stopped, all PAX on 6 and lift Rock over head.  PAX does 10 chest presses in sequence until all are done.  Bear Crawl counter-clockwise, stop for chest presses, bear-crawl clockwise for chest presses.  Let’s kick it up a notch Boo Boo Bear Crawl right leg up clockwise, stop for chest presses,  Boo Boo Bear Crawl left leg up counter-clockwise.  Feeling good now!

Walk large rock over to fence and throw over – Lunge walk halfway back then crab walk the rest of the way back to small rocks.

Walk back to rock pile holding small rock in front of chest with arms extended.

Circle up for arms and back work with large rock:

    • Curls X 20 IC
    • Rows with large rock X20 IC

Stay in circle for Flutter Kicks while holding small rock above chest X15 IC

Count-Off, Name-o-rama, Announcements, Intentions and Prayer.

Thanks to the PAX for letting me lead!

  • I don’t like anyone behind me when talking – its a fact

Douille was sick!  Got the 455am text and of course – I knew I would cover it.

I handed off my Friday Q so that Peaches and Angie’s List could have their VQ!

So as I walked up at 529 – I gave the disclaimer and we were off.

Ran to the field across the street for my normal COP#1 warmup – SSH, Imp Walker Squats, Mtn Climbers and LBCs.

Blood pumping so we mosey’d to the first beach at the FLY.  Here the speedsters would PLANK walk and wait instead of just plank.

At the beach we did some actual PLANK WALK, Shoulder Taps, and some NOLAN RYANs L and R which I changed to Pedro Martinez’s – PAX  didn’t like that – won’t do it again.

Mosey’d to the HILL.  At Monkey Hill we did 10 burpees, cross the MTN 9 burpees, cross back 8 burpees, until the first PAX finished.

After the the descending ladder of burpees we lineup on the Soccer Pitch for World Cup action.

Speed races in 2s.  Across both soccer fields.

Mosey’d to the Labyrinth.  At the Labyrinth we did flutter kicks, single leg wife pleasers R/L X 15 , hip dips R/L x 15,  and dying bugs.

Mosey’d back to the FLAG to close out the beatdown.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead- Douille hope you feel better.  I’d like to see more SPRINTS incorporated in our beatdowns.    Also would like to bring the Ultimate Frisbee burpee fest to Audubon Park one day.

Thanks Roots for the help with the PAX.

  • Running Introduction

Not enough can be said about what we can achieve when we are held accountable.  I’d had a long week by Friday morning and the weekend wasn’t looking any better.  No need to get up at 5 right?  Not quite.  Roots had already texted earlier in the week to let me know I had the Q and just knowing it was my turn to contribute was enough to drag myself out of bed.  I’m not saying I did it very quickly and when I forgot my watch and had to go back inside to grab it I knew time would be tight!  Salt it the wound when I arrived and found a movie production taking up all the parking.  I grabbed a spot much further than normal and could see the Pax staring at their watches as I ran up to meet them.  F3 disclaimer on the fly as we moved quickly into the warm up.

    Warm Up:

Quick Mosey to the flag where this spring’s duck shit has sprouted some aggressive grass. Knowing the shoulders would be a little tight from Wed:

    • Plank Jack IC X 30
    • Peter Parker IC X 30
    • Mountain Climber IC X 30

Mosey to the neutral ground for F3 marketing BLIMPS.  Several cars patiently waited on us to cross so at least a few people noticed.

Slow Mosey from the neutral ground to in front of the Loyola music building where We found some benches:

    • LLS X 20
    • Dips X 20
    • RLS X 20

Long Mosey to the Tulane Parade grounds.  Smell of bacon was in the air.  BLIMPS at the corners and 1/2 way mark.

Mosey to Wolfpack for a double line Indian Run to the top. Hustle down the stairs.

Mosey to touchdown Jesus for one round of dying cockroaches IC X 20.  Mumble chatter suggested perhaps the pace between locations was faster than desired but everyone made it!

Mosey back to the flag just in time.  Count off, namorama,  ball of man.  After a little grab ass in the ball of man, the Pax redirected and joined me in a prayer of thanks for the abilities we have including the mental strength to get out and post with our brothers!

  • He’s not heavy, he’s my brother!

As I was preparing for my Q at the Mothership (Rudy ‘Voluntold’ me last week), I wanted to incorporate some new exercises to keep it ‘Fresh’ as my kids say and to have a theme of teamwork.  The one thing about F3 I so greatly appreciate is the partner workouts.  I know myself too well and I will quit on myself far earlier than quitting on someone else.   After going through the Exicon on our F3NOLA website, I gathered some thoughts and formulated a plan.

    WARMUP

25 SSH, 10 Abe Vigoda, 10 Arm Circles (front and back) all in cadence.

20 x Cheerleaders (Things got off kilter and I got messed up but this was pretty difficult)

    10 x Sprinklers

    20 x J-Lo’s and 20 Peter Parkers

    THE THANG #1

Incorporating the partner theme, we grouped up into 2 groups of three and 2 groups of four and did ‘Catch us if you can’.  We would head from the great lawn to the large grassy area to the right of NOMA (Thank the Lord there are trees for shade and the grass was cut).  For the groups of three, one member carries another member by fireman’s carry or piggyback and runs to the field while the final pax member does 5 plank walks and runs to catch up to their teammates and switches out until they reach the field.  For the groups of four, one pax member will fireman’s carry or piggyback their partner while the other two pax members perform 5 plank walks and then runs to catch the other members of their team and switches out until they reach the field.

    THE THANG #2

After we arrived at the field with many stares from onlookers, we partnered up for B.O.M.B.S. in the shady tree line.  50 Burpees, 100 Overhead Claps, 150 Merkins, 200 Bridges a.k.a Wife Pleasers and 250 Squat Jumps.  One pax member runs out approximately 100 yards and then back while their partner performs the exercises listed.  There was very little mumble chatter as we got to work.  As the PAX started on the Squat Jumps, I could see the fatigue amongst the PAX and quickly decided to drop the total number to 200 from 250.

    THE THANG #3

After a quick water break, we did the Genuflect.  What is the Genuflect, you may ask?  It is a modified Lt. Dan where you are standing and then kneel down and stand back up.  After you stand back up, you perform 2 forward lunges.  From there you kneel down and stand up 2 times and lunge walk forward 4 times.  We did this all the way up to 10 kneel downs and 20 forward lunges.  Again, no mumble chatter.  After we arrived at the 8th tree, we slowsyed back to the water fountain with about 4 minutes left.

    THE THANG #4

Did we run or walk back?  No!  This is a partner themed workout!  Because we did ‘Catch Us If You Can’ on the way out, we would do ‘Catch Us If You Can’ on the way back.

Countoff, Namerama, and Circle of Trust.

It always amazes me how F3 has grown and impacted so many men in our area and throughout the country.  Over half the men at today’s workout weren’t there 6 months ago!  Prayers for the sick and strength and grace for parents that have special needs children.  Lord help us to be difference makers in our homes and in our community!  Thank you for allowing me the privilege of leading the PAX of F3 NOLA!

  • And for the Beatdown, I’ll start with Shoulders and then for my entrée shoulders with a side of shoulders and for dessert…Shoulders!!!!

Oh yes, now we are in the dog days of summer.  So not only did we have 80 degree temperature greeting us at 5:30 but let’s add 100% humidity as it rained the day before.  Fun times and time for some upper-body work.  As El Wire duly noted towards the end of our beatdown.  Every exercise except one included shoulders.  Yes El Wire they did, they surely did.  Onward to the Thang!

Mosey to a open space by Magazine St. for Warmup:

    • Arm Circles Forward X15
    • Arm Circles Reverse X15
    • IW X20
    • Windmills X 15

Mosey to Soccer Field for Bear Crawl Ring of Fire

    • Bearcrawl Counter-Clockwise all till Q yells halt
      • 10 merkins
    • Bearcrawl Clockwise
      • 10 diamond merks

    Let’s increase the difficulty!

    • Boo Boo Bearcrawl Counterclockwise Right Leg Up
      • 10 staggered right
    • Boo Boo Bearcrawl Clockwise Left Leg Up
      • 10 staggered left

Mosey to street leading to statue for:

Indian Crab Crawl to Statue – Line up in four lines of four or five PAX.  Last PAX crabwalks to front of column while other PAX does LBC’s and so on.  This exercise took a little bit longer than expected so we stopped about halfway and…

    Moseyed to the statue for:

    Dora 123 – Partner Up

    • 100 burpees
    • 200 derkins
    • 300 squats

Ran out of time, so called it with most PAX somewhere in their Squat count.

Moseyed to flag with one minute to spare, so, 10 Nolan Ryans each side OYO!

Count off, Name-o-rama (one FNG, Betty Crocker as he likes to bake), announcements, intentions and prayer.

Thank you for letting me lead!

  • A Beat Down 2 Years in the the Making

When Jingle Vader said he would be out of town and needed someone to step up to Q, YHC realized this was roughly his two year F3 Anniversary, and agreed to take the reigns from the mighty JV.  YHC first posted on June 11, 2016 where Maverick was the Q, and it was a good one!  With two years under the belt, YHC figured he could deliver a good one.  Two FNG’s posted with us today, along with 20 Regulars.  After some odd discussions about circles and such (that’s Bogey and Rudy for ya), it was time for the disclaimer…….and then….

Mosey to the Great Lawn for the Warmup

    SSH IC x 31
    IW IC x 20
Sun Gods (Arms Circles) 10 fwd, 10 back
    Mountain Climbers IC x 20
    Peter Parker IC x 20
    Parker Peter IC x 20

Someone set up some cones on the Great Lawn, wonder who that was? YHC figured we could thank him later….

Well, since cones are set up to mirror a basketball court, roughly about 35 feet between cones, may as well put them to good use. Time for some:

    Suicides

    Part 1
sprint to one quarter line, sprint back and do 5 burpees
sprint to half line, sprint back and do 5 burpees
sprint to three quarter line, sprint back and do 5 burpees
sprint full court, sprint back and do 5 burpees

    Part 2
Same suicides, only 10 merkins each time the pax sprints back

    Part 3
    Bear crawl semi suicides
Bear crawl to one quarter line, complete 10 LBC’s, bear crawl back to base line and do 10 merkins
Bear crawl to half court line, 10 LBC’s, bear crawl back to base line for 10 merkins.

    Part 4
    Lunge Walk Suicides
Lunge walk to one quarter line, 10 monkey humpers, run back to base line for 10 merkins.
Lunge walk to half court line, 10 monkey humpers, run back to base line for 10 merkins.
Lunge walk to three quarter line, 10 monkey humpers, run back to base line for 10 merkins.
Lunge walk full court, 10 monkey humpers, run back to base line for 10 merkins.

Line up in two columns for an indian run to NOMA. Apparently YHC did not do a very good job of explaining this, but we all ran, and we made it, so all is good.

    Partner up for:

    Mini Dora 123 (for time)
Pax 1 runs from first tree, or tree zero, or whatever we call it now, to the fountain for 10 dip
Pax two does exercise until relieved. The count is cumulative.
    50 Burpees
    100 Squats
    150 Merkins

    Partner Derkins
Starting at the now infamous first tree
Pax 1 planks, while Pax 2 uses Pax 1 for 10 Derkins.
    Run to next tree, flapjack
    Run to next tree, flapjack
    Run to next tree, flapjack
    Run back to starting point
    That’s 20 derkins for each

    Circle up for Mary
    LBC IC x 30
    Flutter Kicks IC x 20
    Dying Cockroach IC x 20
    Penguins IC x 20

    Mosey back to flags

    COT
Count off, Name-O-Rama, Name the FNG’s, Announcements, Intentions, closed with a prayer to the Sky Q

    NMM
Welcome Outbreak and Sour Patch, T-Claps to Woz and Coxswain for the EH’s!!!
Thanks to all of you for continuing to post in support of F3. There is no doubt my life has changed for the better over the last two years, and I remain several pounds lighter. The daily beatdowns, the Capital Ruck, the Grow Ruck, the Gnarly Nutria, the ISI monthly challenges, and a plethora of other F2 CSAUP events have filled these last two years with incredible memories, and the experiences have improved my roll as a Father, a Husband, and a Friend.
