  • 1776 Patriot Games – from Squints

July 4, 1776: Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence; only Hancock and Thomson’s signatures are on this initial document.

August 2, 1776: Most of the 56 delegates sign the engrossed copy.

Up to 1781: The final signature, by Thomas McKean, completes the set of signatories.

July 4, 2024: Fast forward 248 years to this morning at Okwata, four HIMs took on the challenge of the 1776 Patriot Games training provided by our fellow HIMs at F3 Suncoast in Florida. • 7 Strong @ The Mothership – from King Kong

It’s been awhile since I made it back to the Mothership. Glad Catfish reached out and signed me up to Q. I had no excuse but to grab my passport and crossed that Parish line to a very far, far place called City Park.

It was a humid, hot Saturday morning. By 6:30 a.m., I can see the glares coming off Gabby’s shiny head as he was waiting for us at the Canal Street PJ’s. Tclaps to couple pax who brought their weighted vests to the beatdown.

We warmed up by the Peristyle with stretches, arm circles, Imperial Walkers, Hill Billies, SSHs, open gates, slow low squats, high knees, karaoke, and side hops. After our bodies were loosen up, we slowly Indian ran to NOMA.

By the steps in front of NOMA, we did inclined merkins up each step all the way to the top. We did 20 Rocky Balboa’s in cadence and 15 right / left leg power ups by the fountain.
I was looking for shade the entire workout. Instead of moving to the baseball field, we stayed in front of the fountain and did DORA 1, 2, 3 with 100 merkins, 200 SSHs, and 300 flutter kicks (one is one on the count). While one partner was doing those exercises, the other pax ran to a designated vehicle and back.

After DORA, we Indian ran to the Baby Foundry. We did 5 pull ups, 10 alternate forward lunges, another 5 pull ups, 10 slow low squats, final 5 pull ups, and 10 alternate backward lunges. We left the Baby Foundry and headed to the Great Lawn.

By the time we arrived to the Great Lawn, about 1/4 of the field had shade. And I know the Pax thanked me for hiding in that corner for the last set of exercises before meeting up with Mary. First, we bear crawled half of the field and back. Second, we duck walked half of the field and back. We finally finished off with burpee broad jumps half of the field.

We headed back to where we started at the Peristyle with flutterkicks and Hello Dolly’s. We left Mary behind and finished the morning with stretches. Moseyed back to the flag with announcements and intentions.

The Pax went to coffeeteria for some F2 fellowship. I am forever grateful knowing the Pax will always be there for me.

  • Okwata love to hate – from Mahatma

The venue is one of the best yet getting there can be a journey in and if itself – those that live close by get it and are rebuilding the consistency……except for today! YHC pulled up and saw a single silhouette of squints waiting gloom. After a little small talk and no disclaimer we headed out – YHC “I have a theme for today coming back to Okwata – a little of everything I love to hate” Squints “you mean running!?” YHC – “just a chuckle” as we make our way towards the “known” corner of the HATE! During our mosey a white small suv comes flying through the parking lanes, as we were warming up Squints says “you think that was another pax coming in hot?!” YHC “if so you’d think they would have seen us and made their way by now!” Then almost out of thin air boom pinewood was standing beside us ready to go with the youthful enthusiasm that is refreshing to see amongst us “old guys”!

    So warm up
    2 rounds of Scantron
    SSH
    Side Lunge
    Mnt Man Poopers
    Parker Peter / Peter Parker
    Shoulder Taps

    Thang 1
    A taste of an 8
Rnd 1 4 burpee make the known loop
Rnd 2 2 burpee R&R all continuous picking up the 6
The 2 rounds finished under 9 minutes

    Stretch and Mary
    3 rounds
Some local drive by verbal abuse…..it’s amusing to know how ignorant yutes can be!

    Thang 2
Mosey to the top of the levee Indian Disperse as we ran to the House of Pain

Once at the house incline merkins to recover
Then 3 rounds of 3 pull ups 3 leg lifts
    Now time for a 3-6-5
    3 burpees
Instead of 6 box jumps we did 5
Instead of 5 rounds we did 6
This was a youthful group and YHC wanted to step it up!
Recover again with incline merkins – 5 extra because we wanted to quite!

Mosey back to the tree – 5 minutes left so a quick mosey around the fountain with a short stop for a 1-5 round of Jack-Web

    Mosey back for COT

Man I love Okwata and think the fire has been re lit to a solid level of hate.

Look forward to a return. SYITG

  • At the Intersection of Okwata and DMD – from Fracsac

YHC showed up and planted a flag. 4 other Pax showed up including Dax, HIPAA, Squints, and Cheese Steak. A brief disclaimer was given and off we moseyed towards the fountain then circled up in front for a warmup where there was a serious plank-o-rama.

Move to the fountain for double shots with Jack Webb at the Barre, which is ‘mericans followed by air presses in the people’s chair.

Mosey to the top of the levee for disperse Indian run. Pax that sprints to the front call disperse and an exercise. Pax go down complete 3 of said exercises and then run back up levee.

At the top of Canal is where YHC introduced the pax to my friend, DirtyMacDuece!
    – 4 rounds of 3 x 12 count exercises including arms, legs, and core. Each round ended in a run down across and up with a bear crawl across the newly paved walkway.

No time for pull ups. I need to better manage time and our posterior chains.

Back to the flag for 0615

    NMM

    – I gave HIPAA some great advice today during the DMD. He should recommend more bear crawls to his patients. You’re welcome!
    – Thanks to Cheese Steak we all know where Wilson lives now. His M says he slept in, she didn’t seem eager to let us in to wake him up.

Okwata is calling your name! Come check it out!

  • D-Day 80th Anniversary Workout – from Squints

    **The Warmup:**
We started with a quick mosey around the Mardi Gras fountain, ending up on the grassy knoll for some good ol’ fashioned warmups:
    – Side Straddle Hops x 20 (because who doesn’t love hopping?)
    – Grass Grabbers x 10 (because the grass isn’t going to grab itself)
    – Abe Vigodas x 10 (slow and steady, just like Abe)

    – Seal Claps x 15 (clapping like happy seals)

**Tabata Timed at the House of Pain:**
Next, we moseyed over to the House of Pain for a Tabata-style strength workout. It was 3 sets of 45-second intervals with 15 seconds of rest for each:
    – Pull Ups (pulling up all the courage)
    – Derkins (decline merkins for decline fun)
    – Dips (dipping into greatness)
    – Resting Chair with Air Press (sitting but still working)

**Back to the Mardi Gras Fountain:**
We headed back to the fountain where we (almost) completed 2 rounds of:

    – **D-Day Combo:** 2 merkins, half barrel roll into 2 jump squats, reverse half barrel roll and repeat starting with merkins (rolling and jumping our way to freedom)
    – **War Hammer:** WW2 sit-up with 4 American Hammers (double the pain, double the fun)
    – **J-Lo’s:** because we’re still Jenny from the block
    – **Nolan Ryan’s:** punching out the calories
    – **High Knees on the Ladders:** with a lap around the fountain (high stepping like pros)
    – **Step Ups:** stepping up our game
-**All timed by a climb up the levee with a 50 lbs. slam ball and 5 overhead slams on top (because why not add a mountain to our molehill?)

Moseyed back to the flag for COT: Name-A-Rama and a moment of silence to appreciate those men who paid the ultimate sacrifice on this day 80 years ago. May we live out today and every day as HIMs—not just for ourselves and our families, but for those men who never got that chance.

Thank you for a great first Q this morning, HIMs!

  • Count it out in Months – from Squints

Not sure if we’ve met. I’m JBL Flip 6, but you can call me JB, that’s what my cool master calls me. We’ve been together for almost 2 years now. That’s a really long time. I was being held tight Saturday morning at 0630 and could feel the surge of my partner that was connecting us. My partner is an iphone. Not gonna lie, I’m a little jealous ‘cause he gets all the attention. But when he needs to be heard, I’m front and center! I started dropping my jams from my partner, which was 90s alternative rock. Not my favorite, but I still dig it. I was thinking my master was about to drop the hammer….then this guy Squints starts talking. He gave a great disclaimer then took us to the peristyle and got us warmed up. I’ve never seen pax move to “I’m just a Girl” from No Doubt like they did. It’s no Xanadu, but it is what it is. This Squints guy knows his stuff, he must be well experienced in this Q leadership thing. With the warmup over, I’m sure my main man is going to take charge. Then Squints says let’s mosey. I don’t know what’s happening. I’m picked up and off we go behind the coffee place where I’ve seen guys clean up in the past. I guess they don’t do that anymore. It looks clean and they probably still take credit. I need to dial up a tune on consistency, or maybe iphone can do an ebook about doing hard things.
Squints leads the pax to the island behind the coffee shop where some benches are located. I get set on one next to iphone. I’m having a good time just blaring out some Chris Cornell. He’s the best. I hear Squints ask my master if he knows how old he is in months. There’s no way he knows, he’s not very smart. I’m 24 months, he can’t be much more. I was right, he didn’t know. So Squints tells them he designed a routine that will total the months of age of my master. I thought I heard 650 months, but I must have misunderstood. My master is deaf, which apparently was passed on to me. They did bear crawls over 2 bridges, ‘mericans, reverse sweat angels, air presses in the peoples chair, step ups, and jump squats. Doing that for 5 rounds is supposed to total somewhere around 650 reps. I probably missed something because I got left at the island. I was eventually brought back at the end when everyone was finished. I was ready for my fearless leader to do something super original. Squints hands the Q off for the last evolution! Yes, this is gonna be awesome! My idol takes us back toward the great lawn and stops at the light poles in the parking lot. I got my hopes up for nothing. I forgot how disappointing this guy is. He’s certainly no Squints. We do a route 54 with burpees, which was 9 at the first pole, 9 at the second, then 8, then 7, and so on. That totals 54 when all done. Once complete, they did some Mary where I was in the middle, which is where I belong, then back to the flag. If this were a Q vs Q, Squints would have won for sure.

  • Catfish? I’ll take it. – from Bogey

Arriving in the usual oblivious fashion…without concern for who the Q might be and what we might be doing. A little chatter among the few there, then a couple more…and then with but a minute until start time Catfish shows up…”Well, since no one stepped up I guess I’ll take the Q. And before I could even think about it I blurted out…”OK, Illbtake it!” Whether we’ll admit it or not, none of us really wanted a Catfishing.
    The rest is history….
Quick disclaimer/Warm up at the Peristyle/head to the park area along City Park Ave. Dips, Step-ups, Incline Merkins, Bear Crawl on Train tracks, Mini Dora, Mosey to Esplanade, Ring of Fire, Mosey Dow City Park Ave back to the flag with a few stops along the way.
Thanks to the Pax for humoring me for an hour on a beautiful Saturday morning.

  • The Uncertainty Principle – from Heisenberg

YHC arrived at the mothership, the back of my SUV brimming with various. Bogey was there, stretching limbs that maybe wished they were still in bed. Then came Tool, followed closely by Squints, Bongo, and finally Smooth, who lived up to his name, arriving with the elegance of a gazelle. I was hoping for a larger turnout since the plan required splitting the PAX into two teams. Fortunately, Cheesesteak, Vagabond, Fracsac, and Catfish also joined, rounding out the group. Bongo quipped about expecting less running since YHC was leading, but the day’s agenda did include a fair amount of running, though others ended up running more than Bongo.

Following a lackluster disclaimer, as Bogey pointed out, we headed to the Peristyle for our warmup. We circled up and did grass grabbers, windmills, imperial walkers, side straddle hops, and 10 burpees, all in cadence. Afterwards, we went back to my SUV to grab our gear.

We retrieved our tools for the day: the 60-pound sandbag (lovingly referred to as Sandy), an 80-pound sand medicine ball, an assortment of jump ropes, egg weights, a bisected bosa ball that became an object of anatomical humor, a frisbee, a lightsaber (because why not?), a speaker, and the pivotal red die. We took everything to the edge of the great lawn, where we divided into two teams by counting off in alternating “1”s and “2”s, which took a few tries to get right.

Group 1 started with tabata stations on the great lawn while Group 2 began their runs to the bridge by Café du Monde, based on the roll of the die. The tabata exercises included pushups on the bosa ball, deadlifting the heavy sand medicine ball, speed jump roping, burpees with the lighter sandbag, shadowboxing with egg weights, and using the heavy jump rope. The runs were determined by the die: rolls of 1 or 2 meant one trip, 3 or 4 meant two, and 5 or 6 meant three. The goal was to keep the runners’ duration secret from the tabata group, but this rule was frequently broken.

The roles switched after the runners completed their laps, with the tabata group rolling the die and setting off on their runs. There were suspicions that Group 2 might have rerolled a few times, hoping for lower numbers. As time ran short we stopped the rotation with Group 2 getting an extra turn running. YHC called for a round of core exercises—big boy situps, flutter kicks, and American hammers—and threw in an early “recover,” which was met with some groans and hesitations.

We concluded back at the flag where courtesy of Heisenberg — not the meth cook from TV or YHC, but the physicist. I tied in today’s workout with a physics lesson about Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle from quantum mechanics. It states that in quantum mechanics there is a limit to the accuracy with which certain pairs of physical properties, such as position and momentum, can be simultaneously known. In other words, the more accurately one property is measured, the less accurately the other property can be known. So you were either doing tabata (fixed position) and uncertain about the runners (momentum) or you were running (momentum) and uncertain about what was happening in the fixed position group.
We ended with a Circle of Trust, giving thanks for the day’s efforts and for all the “boobs” in our lives.
Addendum we also learned about the concept of entanglement and may have formed a qubit when Catfish from Group 1 was simultaneously running with Group 2.
