  • No Cancel Q! – from Sea Man

Dropping temperatures buoyed our spirits as sixteen men of steel, 2 without sleeves posted in the first New Year’s freeze. All eager to show their metal, so much so Tinkles tried to steal my Q! Using some derogatory words, that I was feeble, gimpish, and have chronic halitosis, all of which is true, I would not be deterred!

Off they went running like gazelles and me like Quasimodo.

Quick warm up of IW, SSH, Arm Circles forward….and Reverse, into the plank position we pounced for 60 seconds of plank, 10 Mericans, 10 Peter Parkers, 10 Parker Peters, 10 more Mericans, and an additional 60 seconds of plank.

A quick mosey to the shelter where we AMRAP through counts of 22-
    Left Leg Step Up
    Right Leg Step Up
    Left Leg Bulgarian SPLL
    Right Leg Bulgarian SPLL
    Dips
    Declines

After each set we would lunge walk to Oak Alley and back!

After completed a lap around the Alley, back for some Marry – LBCs, Box Cutters, Doctor W, Penguins

Another lap around the Alley and some more Mericans and some more dips followed by the Alley.

Last set was Merican Jacks, 4 plank jacks for every merican, sort of a Jack Web, followed by a call out marry, ending in pickle pounders of love!

  • ‘21 Skinny Final – from Tinkles

12 Pax needed a good sweat after a glutinous Christmas weekend. No place like the Skinny to start the week off and balance out the ongoing holiday fun. It was good to see a crew that was ready to work!

Warm up: Mosey to grass zoo lot for warm up of SSH, Grass grabbers, Imperial Walkers, Peter Parker, Mountain Climbers, Parker Peters.

Mosey to the levee for some hill work. Run towards the Corps building with going up and down the levee between each light pole.

Mosey over to Carver Playground. Pax thinks this is a first. It’s good to get out in the neighborhood a bit. Suicides on the basketball court followed by some Mary and merkin ring of fire. 4-corner BLIMPs on the field. Good work.

Mosey back to the park and the pull-up station. Four stations of work in rotation.

Mosey back to the flag for count off, namorama, and COT. Great seeing everyone and thanks for the chance to lead!

  • MISTLETOE, part deux (F3 traditional arr. By Sandbar, at a Caroling Pace) – from Sandbar

Pax were forewarned that by the end of the beatdown, they would be the jolliest bunch of a-holes this side of the nut house.

Mosey down St. Charles and back to Loyola. Warmups in front of the crèche. SSH, grassgrabbers, windmills. PAX divided into 4 groups, each had to select a carol they knew and could lead bc F3 is about leadership!

Group 1 led the first mosey to the mountain with “We wish you a Merry Christmas.” Group 1 ran out of verses before we reached the mountain.

At the mountain, PAX reformed for a Native American Run, and Group 2 led dashing through the garage while caroling with “Jingle Bells.” Running while singing is HARD.

At level 5 we stopped for the 6 and did 15x Parker Peters, Mountain Climbers, and Peter Parkers IC. PAX reformed into a wassailing group and Group 3 led “All I want for Christmas is my 2 front teeth,” in honor of Bieber’s crash on Oak St. on Tuesday. It lasted for about 50 yards.

On the top deck, PAX paired off for flapjack M-I-S-T-L-E-T-O-E. One pax did the exercise, while the other went down the stairs on level and ran back up.
    Merkins
    Imperial Walkers
    Squats
    Twists (LBTs)
    Louisville Lip
    Toe Taps (Penguins)
    Elf on the Shelf
    One leg calf raises
    El BCs

After MISTLETOE, Group 4 led the caroling into the stairwell, with the 12 Yats of Christmas. YHC and other transplants only knew the traditional lyrics, but neither effort improved the other.

    Back the flag for COT.

  • Christmas Nostalgia on Canal St – from Sandbar

YHC changed up the traditional route for a few Christmas stops. Text gathered below from various sources. Letmegooglethatforyou.com

WWII MUSEUM – Andrew Higgins Blvd.
From 1944 the true story of how American and German soldiers actually spent the night together in a tiny cabin in the Ardennes Forest, along the German-Belgian border, on Christmas Eve during the Battle of the Bulge. The senior german soldier said, “It is the Holy Night and there will be no shooting here.” The next morning he gave a compass and a map to the Americans to find their way home.

ON TH LEVEE by the Aquarium
Quick stop for the bonfires. Intended to light the way for “Papa Noël,” the Cajun Santa Claus, on his airborne journey to the area. Or, according to some sources, the bonfires may have also been a way of lighting the path to the nearest Catholic church for Midnight Mass. The origins of the bonfires tradition is unclear. They may date back to French Marist priests who came to Louisiana just after the Civil War to teach at local cottages, and adapted an ancient tradition that’s found throughout western Europe. Oral histories dating to the 1880s include mention of these fires.

Then up Canal Street and all the glowing palm trees and the center of New Orleans Christmas tradition for over 100 years.

DH Holmes 819 Canal (founded 1842, 800 block)
What is now the Hyatt. The DH Holmes Christmas display was a must-see during the holidays. Also the clock which hung over its entrance was a favorite place for friends to arrange a meeting. All you had to say was “I’ll meet you under the clock” and everyone knew what you meant. A statue of Ignatius Reilly now stands under that clock.

    Maison Blanche (921 Canal)
Now the Ritz Carlton. This department store was founded in 1897 by Isidore Newman, an immigrant from Germany. Maison Blanche is perhaps best remembered for introducing the locally popular Mr. Bingle (1948) Christmas mascot and for its landmark flagship store on Canal Street.

We ran by the Roosevelt and YHC for a moment contemplated running through it’s bright and shiny foyer, but thought better of it.

    SEARS ROEBUCK 201 Baronne St.
From the 1940s through 1979, Sears and Roebuck had a 4 story santa over the entrance, and it was a must stop and must see during the shopping rush along canal.

Fast pace back the flag. Thanks for joining the nostalgic celebration and my birthday Q.

  • MISTLETOE #1, with coupons – from Sandbar

Disclaimer followed by a quick mosey around the parking lot. PAX picked up bricks from YHC’s truck. 2.0s mad about having to load the truck with bricks. Builds character though.

Cusack walk (bricks held overhead, as if it was an 80s boombox) to Oak Alley for SSH IC to warmup, followed by windmills and grass grabbers. Then Nolan Ryans IC and CPRs OYO. (Curls, Press-Ups, Rows 30 each).

M-I-S-T-L-E-T-O-E, with bricks. Pax paired up. One Pax did the exercise while the other Cusack walked to the second light pole. Each Pax did 30 of each exercise, then moved to the next while waiting for their partner.

    Merkins,
    Imperial Walkers

  • Leave Some Men Behind (And then find them) – from Tinkles

It was a nice morning for workout. The park still looks like a firewood farm in many of our usual locations. Good excuse to stick the track for some running. A lighter but spirited crew brought their A-game today.

Warm-up: Arm circles (forwards and back), Grass Grabbers

First Thing: 1.8 mile Indian run around the park. 2 modifying pax finished along with the main group. 2 additional pax were still modifying.

Next Thing: Ring of fire merkins x 2. Still missing two guys.

Next Next Thing: Mosey to lot in front of the zoo for some 4-corners BLIMPS. Pretty sure they will catch up with us soon.

Next Next Next Thing: Head to the parking lot for some Mary. The girls workout is going full blast and who is that over there doing their own Mary… the missing pax! Great instincts to seek out friendly foe! Rewards with Russian Twists, LBCs, Penguins, Dying Cockroaches.

Last Thing: One more four corner BLIMPS modified to take us back to the flag.

Extra Credit: planks with mission impossible.

COT: count off, namorama, and intentions. T-claps to our lost friend Pauly D who is town for a brief stopover and came out to the gloom. Welcome back friend! Have a great week.

  • Saints / Packers Beatdown Commemoration – from Landing Strip

In honor of the thing of beauty that was yesterday’s Saints “home opener” vs. the Packers, the PAX performed a game-themed workout with high efficiency. The cadence of each exercise was tied to a key stat.

    Warmup
First we moseyed to the front of Tulane’s campus and did SSHs (50 – O/U) and burpees (3 – spread (to GB)).

    Tha Thing
We then moseyed to the base of the Loyola Rec Plex garage where we Cleveland Guardian-ran to the top. Finding our usual stairwells filled with HVAC tubing, we ran up and down a spacious, brick-paved and fully air conditioned stairwell after performing each one of the following exercises:
-LBCs (171 – rushing yards (modified to 100))
    -Merkins (22 – first downs)
-Dying roaches (60 – total plays)
    -Burpees (3 – turnovers)

We then moseyed to the base of WPM and again Guardian-ran to the top. From there, we did more exercises and up-downs, this time in smelly, cramped, un-air conditioned stairs:
-Shoulder taps (39 – total rushes)
    -J-Los (34 – time of possession)
    -8 count body builders (2 – INTs)
    -Burpees (2 – sacks)

We then moseyed back to the flag for a final set of 20 low country crabs, in honor of starting QB Jameis WInston’s feast on a W yesterday!

  • Glorious Return to WPM – from Fracsac

26 Pax made a choice to take the DRP on their journey to get right and posted to The Legendary Wolf Pack Mountain to see what YHC had on the beat down menu. With a shovel flag planted, disclaimer was given, then:

Mosey over to the Rosy Palm Court and circle up for a warmup:

    IW IC x 15
    Abe Vigodas x 10
    Grass Grabbers x 10
Bat wings AC, SC, OH, MNC (dancing encouraged)
Catalina Wine Mixers IC x 10

Count off and pax instructed to remember their number. Then count 1,2,1,2….

    Mosey to the mountain…

Two columns, hence the 1 and 2 count. Run to the top of the mountain with last pax sprinting to front all the way up.

Once on top, take the stairs back down to level 4.

Burpee broad jump the short side of level 4, then bear crawl the long way.

Head back up the mountain, with quadraphilia on the inclines and sprints on the straight aways, all OYO.

Circle up on the top for a mental test. The Q has the pax recall their number, then combines the numbers in some fashion for SSH. The instructions are clear: execute SSH IC up to the first number followed by SSH in silence and completing together, with the Q being the cadence to follow. Failure to follow instructions results in a penalty.
    Spoiler alert: there were penalties.
    Penalty 1 – Heisenberg Seal burpees x 10 (burpee with 2 Merkins)
    Penalty 2 – Heisenberg Seal burpees x 15
Penalty 3 – Sprint to far wall and back and do 10 burpees.
The 4th time the Pax got it, sort of.
Time for one set of Tin Snips IC x 20.

Return to the flag for COT

    NMM

    – YHC hasn’t done WPM in a while, and wow! What a rockin’ AO!
    – The uptown crowd was surprisingly quiet today, minimal Mumblechatter going on.
    – There’s a rumor going around about doing burpees even if the pax were in perfect sync. I cannot confirm nor deny this rumor, except to encourage the pax to continue to reach for perfection.
    – Coffeteria was awesome and well attended.
    – Thanks for allowing me to be part of such an incredible group of men, and for gifting me the opportunity to lead.

  • Somebody’s Watching You – from Tinkles

That somebody is Gideon and his drone. I thought for sure the incessant rain of the last week would call off the photo op, but Gideon was not deterred. So to keep the pax dry we headed over to the zoo parking lot. The ladies workout was out in full force. With the drone and ladies and music the pax was getting giddy…..then we actually had to work out.

    Warm Up:
    SSH IC X 30, Grass Grabbers IC X 20, Forward Arm Circles X 20, Reverse Arm Circles X 20, Imperial Walker IC X 20

    The Beatdown:
10 burpees on the minute for 10 minutes– Talking Heads to help distract from the pain

Mosey over to the Audubon statue and pair up for some catch me if you can combinations- Jock jams and El Wire twerking for rest between rounds.
-Loop one: run and partner does 3 burpees and then catches up to tag
-Loop two (short loop): lunge walk and 10 merkins
-Loop three (short loop): bear crawl and 30 LBCs

Finish strong with Rocky Balboas, Incline Merks, Dips, and Decline Merks on the curb. Hustle back to the flag.

COT: get your whiskey night sign up completed! Prayers for helping us lead in all aspects of our lives. Drone footage coming soon!
