  • Crescent City Fall Classic Preview

    The Q sheet for The Stomp was mysteriously blank for this beautiful Tuesday morning. On Monday, YHC wondered why would such a popular beatdown did not have a Q — rain in the forecast (we all know Lakeview people can’t handle a little rain). So at 5:01 am, YHC took the Q, his first at the beloved 610 Stomp.

    This Saturday morning is the Cresent City Fall Classic. YHC has always dreamed of running the Cresent City 10k from a timed coral. The fall classic and the St. Patty’s two-miler are the qualifiers for the 10k but YHC cannot attend either this year. So, why not make the entire Stomp crowd attempt to run qualify for the race at an F3 workout.

    We mosey from the flag to the starting line. Along the way, we warmed up with high knees, butt kicks, carioca right, and carioca left.

    At the starting line, the course was roughly explained. Runners were reminded that a CCC10k qualifying time was 22:00. With that disclaimer, we were off.

    After passing Christian Brother’s the kind security guard told us that our route would need to be modified (darn VooDoo Fest). No worries we modify and move on.

    At the conclusion of the run, a few things were determined.

    1. The Pax determined that Shuffles probably qualified and no one else.
    2. YHC discovered how his M feels when I don’t follow directions.
    3. F3 is full of leaders and followers, both were on display today.
    4. Amnesty plays by his own rules.
    5. The park is safer than running down the bayou (except for that one part when I lead the Pax into the middle of Wisner).

    Finished with Mary, stretching, and burpees.

  • “Do they make men’s sports bras?”

    The answer to that question is no, but more on that in a moment.

    YHC arrived at Popeyes on this cool, crisp morning with a beatdown appropriate for individuals who would find their joy in running the following morning at the Wally Run. The temperature was 62 degrees but based on Boo Boo’s attire you would have thought it was minus 62 degrees. With the park set-up for a weekend event, the mosey to the Esplanade workout equipment would take a bit longer. At 5:28, YHC gave the disclaimer and headed out making sure not to get out of sight before 5:30 in case someone came in hot.

    Warm-Up

    No time to circle up so a warm-up on the go—

    High Knees, Butt-Kicks, Carioca Right, Carioca Left, Walking Imperial Walkers, Arm Circles as we ran. We did circle up once about halfway through for SSH, Abe Vigodas, and Seal Jacks (note: these men do not have the coordination required for Seal Jacks)

    The Thang

    At the Esplanade workout equipment we completed one minute each of the following exercises:

    Burpees, Lunges, Dips, Inch Worms, Irkins, Military Sit-Ups, Plank Jacks, LBCs, Squats, Bonnie Blairs, Leg Raises (hanging from the pull-up bars), and Imperial Squat Walkers. We completed the circuit with a 6-pack (Think 11s with pull-ups and Merkins but only totaling 6 reps)

    We completed the round and moseyed back toward the flag. Along the way we had an opportunity to encourage one of our newest Metry Pax, Mile High. Mile High has worked hard over the last couple of weeks but has made it known to everyone he is not a runner. We let him set the pace on the return mosey but not without asking, “Do they make men’s sporting bras?” They don’t, but T-claps to Mile High for sprinting to the finish.

    Mile High’s effort and the Pax response is a subtle reminder, “Leave no man behind, but leave no man where you found him!”

  • You don’t have to be perfect, just better than yesterday

    20 runners were greeted with an absolutely perfect pitch black morning at the Stomp today. The temperature hovered around 65 degrees for the entire run, and at no point did we see the sun. Thanks to Daylight Savings Time and those long Spring and Summer days, we’re treated to at least a mid-workout sunrise for most of the year. In fact, the sunrises will be back next month when Daylight Savings Time kicks in. Until then, let’s enjoy these last few chances to make our way through the dark, quiet streets of New Orleans while the city sleeps.

    About 6 months ago, some of us timed ourselves in a 1-mile at the Danger Zone. Since the DZ is no more, YHC decided to bring the time trials to The Stomp. The instructions were simple…. well, I thought they were simple at least.

    • Bring an activity tracker
    • All run one warm-up mile together
    • Once your activity tracker makes 1 mile, run Mile 2 as hard as you can
    • Regardless, turn back at 20 minutes and run back to the flag.
    • Send me your mile 2 time

    Even with a little confusion, this mostly went off without a hitch. The purpose of the time trial is not to see who’s fastest, but see how we’re improving. Sure, it’s fun to run around in a tank top in the early morning grabbing grass and doing a few burpees, but overall, I think we all want to get a little better, faster, stronger. To that end, I’ll post your time from today if you send it to me, and I’ll tag this post with #timetrial . Search that tag next time we do this and see how you’ve improved. Here is what I have.   • 5 year CONVERGENCE!

    Well – 5 years later we are still going STRONG! I remember when we started thinking I don’t have time in my life for this group. After a week of beatdowns I knew that we had to commit to growing this group – it had already begun to change my life and they way I interact with people everyday. I know after a nasty 530am beatdown – that I can handle anything the day throws at me. Thanks to all the guys here in NOLA that keep things running so that we can continue to be a group. Thanks to OBT for taking time out of his life to get us going in the GLOOM! Looking forward to 5 more years of F3 in NOLA.

    Today the pre-run started with about 20 PAX for a run down BAYOU ST JOHN. Beautiful weather, cool air and a crisp breeze. We ran 12 min out and 12 min back so that we could arrive in time for the fun.

    KUCH – has a been a great EH’er and a nice addition to F3 NOLA. Kuch started the party off with a WARM UP circle. SSH, Imp Walkers, Arm Circles, Peter Parkers, Merks.

    Then we divided up by 5 count into teams. We did 5 burpees, 5 Lunges, 5 Merkins, 5 Squats, 5 Plank Jacks. Bear Crawl across the lawn. Run back. KUCH did an excellent job getting the teams set quickly

    5 reps. We ran out of time and had to call it after 3 reps. No team won due to the shortened KUCH set. Kuch represented NOLA well – with a pretty gnarly start to a celebratory event.

    2nd set with DURACELL – FROM BATON ROUGE

    Duracell brought out 2 coupons. 40lb cinderblocks. 2 PAX ran to the center and did 3 thrusters. We went two different directions. A slow starter but once the PAX got the hang out this one – this was a solid beatdown. Duracell had to do about 15 exercises in cadence to 20. Exercises ranged from a regular plank, to shoulder taps, to merk variations to squat/lunge variations. The highlight of this section was Mathlete’s 2.0-Bear getting that cinderblock in the right position and up. Duracell represented the RED STICK well.

    THIGHS FROM THE WANK- 3rd quarter. We started with a solid mosey over the to the lawn in by the museum. Upon arrival we see that Thighs has organized with some printed out signs a 15 min beatdown that is going to suck. At each sign there was an exercise- PAX had to complete 20 reps the first time through, 15 reps the 2nd time through. (Possible 3rd time for the fastest pax members). Exercises were:

    2. Diamond Merks
    3. Reverse Crunches aka Gaspumps
    4. Bobby Hurleys
    5. Merkin Toe Touches (need to incorporate this more in my Qs)
    6. Freddie Mercs

    RUN back to the start line and do this again. Thighs had the teams organized in a way by street names. Due to 75 PAX that didn’t quite workout but Thighs quickly modified and let the teams fall where they were. A good quick call. Thighs demonstrated that there is nothing easy about the WANK. Those guys are tough! Great turnout by the WB.

    STEVE FROM THE NORTHSHORE- FINISHED OFF The PAX back on the great lawn. Each pax got a partner.

    You had to do your partners age in burpees, your partners weight in LBCS, and your partners months in F3 in Freddies.

    Steve had a few minutes left so he finished with some Peter parkers, and some American Hammer.

    After a 75 PAX NAME O RAMA, NUMBERRAMA – Hokey POkey finished us off with an awesome prayer!

    After the whole beatdown we gathered at Cafe Du Monde for a 5 year celebration party. Tclaps to Rudy, Tool and Gabrielle for making that happen. There were eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits, beignets and plenty of coffee!

  • Sunday Mornings aka “Donkey Kicks”

    YHC has made it a habit to attend the Sunday morning workouts at the Renaissance as we can workout, have coffeeteria, and still be home by 8am before the house wakes up. One constant exercise that has showed up in each Q the last few weeks is Donkey Kicks on the back wall of NOMA – in fact, we now call Donkey Kicks – “Sunday Mornings”. The inspiration for today’s Q was Sunday Mornings and trying to incorporate some music into the work-out. So with the help of my family at the ranch – we set up a play list last night and made sure the Bluetooth speaker worked. Off we go……

    7 pax met at the flag at 6am. Quick disclaimer and a short mosey to the grassy area between NOMA and adjacent to the lake for warm up. TRACK 1 – VAN HALEN’s – JUMP – played during the warm-up with each time we hear the word “Jump” the PAX did SSH. In between, PAX did some Imperial Walkers, Arm Circles, and Mountain Climbers to warm up.

    TRACK 2 – THE BLACK EYED PEAS – LET’S GET IT STARTED (- RUNNIN’ RUNNIN’, RUNNIN’) – perfect song for indian run up and around delong drive in front of the museum

    TRACK 3 – SURVIVOR – EYE OF THE TIGER – three minutes of Rocky Balboa’s in front of the museum

    TRACK 4 – PETER GABRIEL – KISS THAT FROG – i am a huge fan of peter Gabriel so we had to incorporate one of his songs. For the length of the song perform flutter kicks – when Peter sings “Kiss that frog” – time to morph to Crunch frogs.

    TRACK 5 – BEASTIE BOYS – BRASS MONKEY – hold the Al Gore, until “Brass Monkey” transition to monkey humpers. This was more monkey humpers than Al Gore. Around the time Belloq noticed the sunrise – a site to see this morning over the lake in front of NOMA.

    TRACK 6 – IMAGINE DRAGONS – THUNDER – Dragon Walk on the neutral ground in front of NOMA about 30 yards.

    TRACK 7 – LIONEL RICHIE – EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING – mosey to the rear wall of NOMA for some Sunday Mornings – aka Donkey Kicks. Hold Al Gore or People’s Chair throughout song – Each time Lionel belts out “Easy like Sunday Morning” time for 10-20 Donkey Kicks on count of YHC.

    TRACK 8 – MAROON 5 – SUNDAY MORNING – No rain was falling so the PAX were in for more Sunday Mornings at NOMA – Incline shoulder taps with feet on back wall of NOMA with “Sunday Mornings” sprinkled throughout the song.

    With about 7 minutes left circled at the flag for some Mary – each PAX led an exercise in cadence – LBC’s, boxcutters, Cockroaches, SSH, then with one minute left and Fracsac yet to lead – you guessed it 10 burpees.

  • Exterminating The Killer B’s

    With the first week of The Iron Pax Challenge coming to a close, the brave men of F3 NOLA had one last shot at exterminating the Killer B’s, a workout not meant for the weary.  For some guys it was round one, others round two with hopes of improving times.  The heat and humidity along with the uncut wet grass would not help matters at The Muscleship, but the Pax was determined to take care of business.  After a quick warmup, we got in position and fired up some motivation music to hopefully help numb the pain of the burpees and such that wait ahead. Saturday was also the much anticipated LSU vs UT game, so a few LSU fight songs made their way on the playlist, in lieu of the Coach O motivation sound bites that YHC was unable to make happen.  

    The THANG: Killer B’s

    Broad Jump 10 yards, do 10 burpees, 10 Bonnie Blairs (jump lunges) and 10 Big Boi situps.

    All PAX finished in times ranging from roughly 27-45 min.  T-claps to those early finishers that swept the six and got some lagniappe in. Many PAX later discussed the wet, uncut grass hindering times, but that was our only choice in the area.  YHC had previously considered a mosey to one of the nearby, manicured fields but figured the extra run would bring some groans.  

    Capped things off with 5 or so round robin Mary exercises and a COT.   

    A good morning was had by all.  T-claps to the PAX for digging deep and grinding through.  And T-claps to the die-hards that opted to do this workout 2-3 times throughout the week.  Hopefully we all got stronger.

  • 44 Minutes of Yoga and 1 Burpee

    Attendees: (9) Abacus, Belloq, Catfish, Chips, Fracsac, Gideon, Heisenberg, Hokie Pokey, Sogo (+1) Dog (DJ Diver)

    YHC wanted to plan his second Q carefully after he personally perceived his VQ at Okwata over a year ago a failure. With Catfish in the PAX on Sundays, you don’t want to be remembered as the guy who bored him to the point that he decides to do burpees because you haven’t challenged him enough.
    I have been hinting that it would be a workout of yoga and when they saw me arrive in my favorite Lululemon shorts, I could see that the 8 other men who got out of bed this morning were worried we’d be stretching for 44 minutes with 1 burpee to make it count as a Sunday morning beat down according to Fracsac; however, I had a road trip in mind…
    Started with the disclaimer and circled up the 8 around YHC in the 85° gloom to start the workout.

    The Wall Thang: Mosey to our wall on NOMA and plank for the 6. During plank, YHC held an informal poll to determine name for next exercise. Sunday Mornings or Sunny Sundays? Sunny Sundays was unanimous so we proceeded to do Sunny Sundays.
    Sunny Sundays were brought to us by Gideon from our brethren in Austin. The cycle includes the following:

    Squat with back against the wall in a chair position. 10 air arm presses while holding chair position.

    Go to all fours with hind side to wall for 5 donkey kicks.

    Hold fifth donkey kick and walk legs up the wall into a handstand. Do one handstand body weight press. We rinse and repeated twice for a total of 3 cycles.

    Knowing we have a new Iron PAX challenge starting Monday and given the clues to add construction equipment to the back of my truck over the coming week, I decided to go cardio heavy on our workout.

    We lost Chips on the way due to a quick break and unfortunately I didn’t give him my plan so he ran around NOMA until we returned. T-Claps to Chips for not giving up. Also, T-Claps to Gideon for a beastly Flex Arm Hang which to be fair was done during Catfish’s turn to be our timer, but I still think his effort was outstanding.

    8 men came out in the gloom and suffocating humidity to Popeyes on Wednesday, August 28th at 5:30am to try their hand at the IronPax Preseason challenge.

    YHC started with the basic disclaimer at 5:29am and led the pax in a 400 meter warmup mosey to establish the lap for the run of this morning’s challenge.

    The Thang

    24 squats, 24 merkins, 24 lunge steps (2 count as 1), and a 400 meter run is one lap. The goal is to complete six in the fastest time possible. Simple but not easy, especially in the humid conditions.

    BooBoo for picking up the Uptowner AO Q (if you ask me the Uptowner Q has been slacking off on his Q duties lately, it’ll be great to see fresh blood restore life to the Uptowner)

    Hokie for improving on his previous time for the IronPax preason by an insane 8 minutes. Hokie basically lapped his Monday time.

    Darkwing Duck for improving in leaps and bounds since his F3 start and making me feel guilty for being more consistent to the Metairie workouts than I am.

    KennerBrah for putting all of us young guys to shame with his work ethic.

    Chips for pushing through to the end and ensuring that every Pax member left this morning stronger and faster than when he arrived.

    The Conclusion

    Count-Off, Name-O-Rama, Chips continued with last lunge walks as we counted off and the Pax ran Chips last lap with him. Announcements and Prayer in the extra sweaty ball of man.

  • Typical, Humid, Summer 610 Stomp Morning

    What is also becoming typical on Tuesdays is the large PAX and participation we continue to see and grow through F3.  This is despite even adding a Monday morning running workout.  This is a good thing.

    The workout was very simple:

    15 minutes out and back,  traditional route via Bayou St John.

    Then directly to the track for 10 minutes of running the straights,  jog

    curves.

    Then some stretching exercises, LBCs,  and a “slant” hold for that last 5 minutes.  Some folks haven’t stretched since high school.

    Count off, Nam-a-rama, Announcements, COT.

    Always a privilege to lead with such a great large group of like minded individuals.
