  • The Thrillabon in the Audubon

Being an F3 Nation member for only 10 months (last race I was nothin but a gleam in a Hawg’s eye), the Gnarly Nutria was the stuff of legend. A back and forth sporting event like the world has not witnessed since Ali vs. Frazier. Two heavyweights going toe to toe for 5.4 miles with the Uptowners dominating Gnarly Nutria I and The World squeaking by with a narrow victory in Gnarly Nutria II.

This year The World looked to overwhelm the smug Uptowners with numbers, and we have been recruiting. I was even dreaming of running the first race of my life but fell to the wayside with a calf injury on Friday. Although The World would now be missing their best runner, they still persevered and began the race with a distinct advantage in numbers.

Following an epic lightning storm, the race began at 9:10pm. Our first finishers were a family group, and hat’s off to Sandbar who brought two of his 2.0s who finished the first lap in solid time.

I knew the Uptowners were going to be in trouble when the first runners to not complete all three laps were Uptowners. Then the top two finishers of all three laps were both from the World and the landslide began. Like an over-the-hill Frazier against Ali, the Uptowners were no match for The World in Gnarly Nutria III.

The final score was 446 The World and 354 Uptowners. The World is so fast, we turned off the lights in our bedrooms when we got home last night and we were in bed before the room was dark.

We welcomed 4 FNGs into our numbers in the largest sweaty ball of man I have ever seen. I got to hand it to the runners, the names for our new members were great. We welcome Tubbs, Tramp Stamp, Right Cheek and his brother Left Cheek to F3. May we forget your real names and always refer to you by your F3 names in public.

Here are your Gnarly Nutria top finishers:

    1. Smooth – The World

    2. Turbo Tax – The World

    3. Pony Boy – Uptowner

    4. El Guapo – The World

    5. Mulligan – Uptowner

    6. End Time – The World

    7. YSR – Uptowner

    8. Swampcock – Uptowner

    9. Cavalier – Uptowner

    10. Mahatma-Ice – The World

    11. Right Cheek – The World

    12. Nip/Tuck – Uptowner

    13. Jadaveon – Uptowner

    14. Cowbell – The World

    15. Hawgcycle – The World

    16. Thighs – The World

    17. Freedo – Uptowner

    18. Cornbread – The World

    19. El Wire – Uptowner

    20. Mariah – Uptowner

    21. Rudy – The World

    22. Rocket – The World

    23. Peppa – Uptowner

    24. Saban – Uptowner

    25. Tubba – The World

    26. Tramp stamp – The World

    27. Bubba – The World

    28. Shorty – The World

    29. Brownbag – Uptowner

    30. Landing Strip – Uptowner

Left cheek, Bad Moon, Two Yutes, Shooter, Bushwacker, Einstein, 86, Pi, Walleye, King Kong, Triple Shift, Reluctant Yankee, and Roots fell just outside the top 30 in this order. I couldn’t keep up with the names after Roots. Congrats to all who finished and all who completed 1 or 2 laps. Thank you for helping us all be better men as we do stupid, pointless things like run for no reason in the middle of a lightning storm while chased by Jaguars.

I’m inviting you to our next AO at “the Boxing Match” sculpture in Kenner’s Rivertown. The first Wednesday of September will be the launch of the F3 NOLA “Fight Club.”

Your Humble Scorekeeper (I don’t plan on doing this next year, so someone else better get hurt right before the race in 2019),

  • 300 is the # of the day

Warm, gloomy, and muggy…perfect conditions for a F3 sweat fest.  That’s what YHC encountered as I made my way to the usual Foundry meeting spot.  It was 5:26 and not a soul in sight.  Was everyone getting their beauty rest?  Was I the only one from Team World that was manly (or crazy) enough to post twice in one day???  Fortunately several guys soon rolled up bringing our total to 7 PAX by kick off time.  With the Gnarley Nutria 15 hours later, the plan was to keep our legs fresh and focus on the core and upper body.  YHC had originally planned to bring out some concrete blocks but hit a snag with rain and time so on to plan B, albeit a hastily thrown together one.  Here’s what we did:
Mosey down RM to the grassy area adjacent to the lagoon for a long no-impact warmup with a theme that would build as we went.  We knocked out 30ea of the following exercises IC:  IPW, AC, WM, Peter Parkers, Low Country Crab, Hill Billies, Shoulder Taps, 2 others??, and closed out with 30 Merkins OYO…..totaling 300 exercises in all.
Then on to the illuminated NOLA 300 sign near the Big Lake.  In lieu of lighting 300 birthday candles for our great city, we instead would knock out 300 reps of a few different exercises, starting with:
Partner Plank Slaps, aka Patty Cakes x50 followed by short mosey to lake ledge for Dips x25 OYO (ea PAX)
Then PSx40, Dipsx20, PSx30, Dipsx15, PSx20, Dipsx10, PSx10, Dipsx5….totaling 150 PS and cumulative 150 Dips….only half-way there.  A PAX suggested we visit the water fountain so the audible led us to tweak the plan.  After a short mosey to hydrate, we knocked out round 2 of above exercises near the museum pond/ledge for a total of 300 PS and 300 Dips….Happy Birthday NOLA!  Wait, there’s more….
Circle up around the oval pond/ledge for a few rounds of cumulative count exercises in an effort to once again reach 300:
Round 1 – All PAX hold decline plank position, then in clockwise motion individually knock out a Derkin calling out the count until 100…each PAX did 14-15 in addition to holding a declined plank….lot’s of blood flowing to the head.
Round 2 – Hold Russian Twist position and go around to 100.  In hindsight, YHC should have called for continuous RT but either way we were sweating.
Round 3 – Hold inclined plank and go around to 100.
Mosey back to the flag for COT.  Great way to start the day!

  • Stomp 151 – Sprinting in the gloom

Morning Forecast: Typical July morning.  Hot.  Preposterous humidity.  Low growls of thunder in the distance.  Good times.  The brief time when we could welcome the stomp with the sunrise seems to already be in the past, so instead we welcome the PAX in the Tuesday morning Gloom.

The Pax: Another week with a near-record crowed: 13 PAX in the gloom to go out for a run.  Rudy Q – means we’re running.  None of this “Hey, lets kick a baseball.” stuff.  Nice to see Shorty back in the fold, as well as a newly Respected Amnesty.

The Route: 30 minutes.  15 out and 15 back.  At your pace, meet back at the track at 6:00.  YHC enjoyed getting pushed by Smooth, El Guapo and Shorty (WELCOME BACK!).  At least until Smooth turned on the after-burners at the entry back into City Park, leaving us in the dust.  Good addition to Team World!

The Track: Gathering back at the track at 6:00, give everyone a minute to catch their breath.  Then we’re on to the Sprint Ladder:

    • 100 sprint, 100 recovery
    • 200 sprint, 100 recovery
    • 400 sprint, 100 recovery
    • 200 sprint, 100 recovery
    • 100 sprint, 100 recovery

As PAX finish, settle in on your backside to get some Rower Situps in.  x10.  Then x10 more.  Then x10 More.  That brings the 6 home to roost.  Mosey back to the flags (thanks FracSac for tending the flags!).

    Count-off, Announcements.

  • LGBTcoQcurious

Peaches was approached to VQ  and in fit of panic enlisted me, Angie’s List, into a Manage-a-Deux-VQ. I graciously accepted and even jotted down some exercises which I promptly left at home. Luckily Peaches was on top of his game and had many fun things planned for the PAX including music, running, running, running and a sunrise on Green Wave Mountian. After we had our picture made with a giant phallic bell tower in the background. How apropos.

  • He’s not heavy, he’s my brother!

As I was preparing for my Q at the Mothership (Rudy ‘Voluntold’ me last week), I wanted to incorporate some new exercises to keep it ‘Fresh’ as my kids say and to have a theme of teamwork.  The one thing about F3 I so greatly appreciate is the partner workouts.  I know myself too well and I will quit on myself far earlier than quitting on someone else.   After going through the Exicon on our F3NOLA website, I gathered some thoughts and formulated a plan.

    WARMUP

25 SSH, 10 Abe Vigoda, 10 Arm Circles (front and back) all in cadence.

20 x Cheerleaders (Things got off kilter and I got messed up but this was pretty difficult)

    10 x Sprinklers

    20 x J-Lo’s and 20 Peter Parkers

    THE THANG #1

Incorporating the partner theme, we grouped up into 2 groups of three and 2 groups of four and did ‘Catch us if you can’.  We would head from the great lawn to the large grassy area to the right of NOMA (Thank the Lord there are trees for shade and the grass was cut).  For the groups of three, one member carries another member by fireman’s carry or piggyback and runs to the field while the final pax member does 5 plank walks and runs to catch up to their teammates and switches out until they reach the field.  For the groups of four, one pax member will fireman’s carry or piggyback their partner while the other two pax members perform 5 plank walks and then runs to catch the other members of their team and switches out until they reach the field.

    THE THANG #2

After we arrived at the field with many stares from onlookers, we partnered up for B.O.M.B.S. in the shady tree line.  50 Burpees, 100 Overhead Claps, 150 Merkins, 200 Bridges a.k.a Wife Pleasers and 250 Squat Jumps.  One pax member runs out approximately 100 yards and then back while their partner performs the exercises listed.  There was very little mumble chatter as we got to work.  As the PAX started on the Squat Jumps, I could see the fatigue amongst the PAX and quickly decided to drop the total number to 200 from 250.

    THE THANG #3

After a quick water break, we did the Genuflect.  What is the Genuflect, you may ask?  It is a modified Lt. Dan where you are standing and then kneel down and stand back up.  After you stand back up, you perform 2 forward lunges.  From there you kneel down and stand up 2 times and lunge walk forward 4 times.  We did this all the way up to 10 kneel downs and 20 forward lunges.  Again, no mumble chatter.  After we arrived at the 8th tree, we slowsyed back to the water fountain with about 4 minutes left.

    THE THANG #4

Did we run or walk back?  No!  This is a partner themed workout!  Because we did ‘Catch Us If You Can’ on the way out, we would do ‘Catch Us If You Can’ on the way back.

Countoff, Namerama, and Circle of Trust.

It always amazes me how F3 has grown and impacted so many men in our area and throughout the country.  Over half the men at today’s workout weren’t there 6 months ago!  Prayers for the sick and strength and grace for parents that have special needs children.  Lord help us to be difference makers in our homes and in our community!  Thank you for allowing me the privilege of leading the PAX of F3 NOLA!

  • Happy ANZAC Day. With Bricks.

    ANZAC Day

A day of remembrance for the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who landed on Gallipoli in World War 1.  Depending on your point of view, this was perhaps the most devious but poorly executed plan, or the most ill-begotten idea ever devised by humans.  Regardless, the actual outcome was a far cry from the hopes originally envisioned by one Winston Churchill when he devised the plan as a way to break the Western Front stalemate in 1915.  After the failed seaborne invasion, the military commanders arrived on a plan to land troops and take the peninsula.  Alas, they probably couldn’t have picked worst landing points – and the Australian/New Zealand troops landed on a small beachhead, surrounded by high ground and entrenched Turkish troops.  The troops never came close to a breakthrough, and instead took 8 months of astounding losses – but refused to retreat from their position.

Please take some time today to offer a prayer for military troops everywhere who have suffered and died in their missions.

Brick Day: YHC woke to a beautiful crisp morning at the Foundry.  The lights are still out, so I struggled to identify the shadows milling about the flag.  “Is that you Milkman?”  Yes, it was.  “I hear singing!”  Yup, there was Bogey.  Smooth and Tool snuck in quietly, forgoing their cars to mosey to the AO.  Mambi, Abacus and Mahatma rounded out the morning crew.

5:30 – disclaimer (especially watch footing because its so darn dark…)  Stop by YHC’s car for a morning surprise.  Bricks.  I like to keep bricks in the car just in case something like this (a morning Q for F3).  Everyone grab 2 bricks and lets go.

    Stop #1: ANZAC Day remembrance

    • A: Abe Vigodas x15.  Slow cadence, no bricks
    • N: Newton’s Cradle x20.  With bricks.  Good times
    • Z: Zig Zag Hops.  10x Out and Back
    • A: Absolution x20.  Look it up in the lexicon.  8 count plank exercise.
    • C: Crunches x25

Stop #2: Brick-BLIMPS on the track.  Partner Up.  Each partner runs opposite ways on the track.  Whenever they meet, do the next exercise.  Then back to the track to run opposite ways.  All exercises with bricks.  Total of 3+ laps on the track plus the assorted exercises.  Plank, then throw in another set of 10 Newton’s Cradles.

Stop #3: Off to the baby Foundry.

Quick Change of Pace: Brick Bear Crawl across the field (maybe 50 yards?).  Bricks slide, but then get harder to hold as they get slick….

At the Foundry, leave the bricks in a pile and partner up for 4 stations

    • Box Jumps x20 (the timer)
    • Pull Ups
    • Hanging Knee Lifts
    • Jumping over the Green Snake

    Repeat x2

Stop #4: Not a complete Rudy workout without a plank-o-rama.  Since its 4/25, we’ll do 4 sets of 25.  I guess we do 4 sets of 25 every time.  But whatever.  It was special today anyway.

    • Peter Parker x25
    • Shoulder Taps x25 (with or without brick at your choice)
    • Parker Peter x25
    • Floyd Mayweather x25 (with or without bricks – though it was MUCH HARDER with the bricks)

Back to the flag (stopping to carefully put the bricks back in YHC’s car).  We had a minute to spare, so close up with 15 Burpees OYO.

Did you know – today (4/25) is also the day that Admiral Farragut demanded the surrender of New Orleans in the Civil War (1862), and the day that US and Russian troops met at the Elbe river in German in World War II (1945).

Close with Announcements – 5/18 Barathon, 6/2 Summer Series race.  COT to remember all of our intentions, and ask for blessings to use the gift of today wisely, and grace to be better leaders and servants.

Thanks for letting me (the Foundry Foreigner, I suppose) Q today.

  • A Hidden Tribe of Super Athletes and the Greatest 610 Stomp The World Has Ever Seen

The Natives gathered in the gloom awaiting the arrival of  El Caballo Blanco.  In true Islenos fashion, he rolls in hot just after the disclaimer and instructions had been given.  The natives were excited at his arrival, believing he would provide the beacon of light they needed to reach the mountain that morning.  Alas, once again, they were disappointed by El Caballo Blanco, as they quickly noticed he had no light to shine.

Before his arrival, the natives had counted off and assembled themselves in two teams, one comprised of even numbers, the other of odds.  One of the natives accurately surmised that El Caballo Blanco is odd and pointed him to his team.

    The Thang

A Rarajipari race to Laborde Mountain.  One team of two (Tool and Hawg) vs. a team of three (Smooth, Frac, and Da Parish).  Each team must kick a baseball all the way to Laborde Mountain in the Couturie Forest (approximately 1.75 miles).  First team to get their baseball to the top of the mountain wins.  Once at the top we completed Monday and Tuesdays ISI challenge, then it was a race back to the flag.  Each team decided to take different routes out of the forest.  Tool and YHC took the long route and fell so far behind the other team, we weren’t sure if we were behind them or ahead of them.   We were definitely behind them.  We picked up our ball and took the Marconi shortcut to find the victors sealing the deal with burpees.

    NMM

This was a fun one.  As Da Parish remarked, it didn’t feel like we ran 3.75 miles.  The pace was pretty good too for kicking a ball the whole way.  Tool and I were about 9 minutes/mile on the way to the mountain.  This has CSAUP written all over it.  Need to figure out a long path…ten to 15 miles where we could race without worrying too much about cars.
