  • Curls For The Girls, Lunges For The Ladies

Is there a F3 name for writer’s block when mapping out a workout?  If so, YHC had a case of that leading up to the Uptowner on Fri.  Lots of good ideas brewing but hard to settle on which ones….maybe a tabata timer? do we fumble with a sweaty phone, music?, rocks or no rocks?  One rock or two rocks?  How muddy would it be from the rain and the the pumps?  Perhaps a 1000 rep workout but would there be time?  How do you pick?  Well, YHC picked up Amnesty in the original LCC and tapped his old and wise brain while in route.  We decided on a few tweaks, and would make sure to incorporate curls since he would be beach bound the following day.  As to the clocked neared time for kickoff, it was good to see a mix of F3 veterans and rookies alike trickling in, including a FNG.

After the disclaimer, YHC informed the PAX the plan may change on the fly and we’d hone in on upper body and core since many of us were still recovering from running the GN.  Here’s what we did:

Warmup – IW, WM, AC, SSH, LSS, all IC

COP #1 – We grabbed two rocks, one large for curls, etc. and one med/small “good form” rock.  Circled up for Curls, Tricep Ext, Rows, Alt Lunges, V-roach w/rock), Chest Press, one min plank…maybe one or two more?  Rinse and repeat.

Drop the rocks and bear crawl approx 50-60yds to light pole, then mosey to the water fountain for hydration.  There we circled up by the benches for:  Dips, LLSU, RLSU, Dips, all IC.  Then a mosey back to the track, with a 50-60yd lunge walk before heading back to the rock circle.

COP#2 – Round robin style with alternating core and/or upper body exercises.  The PAX took turns leading merkins on rock, curls, chest press, skull crushers, scoops, merkins, LBC w/ rock, all IC.
Deposited rocks and finished up with a minute of hip flexor stretching.

We capped things off with a COT.  Welcome FNG Shocker who is an up-and-coming low voltage video and alarm guru.  Prayed for Mambi’s father and Holy Grove’s father as they struggle with health issues and daily things we all may take for granted.  Also prayed for gratitude and a few other intentions.

Hopefully this workout helped Amnesty look buff on the beach this week and his M was the envy of every lady around.  And hopefully everyone else left stronger than when they came.  As always, thanks to the PAX for the continued motivation.  Always a pleasure to lead.

    (Belated Post from 7.12.2019)

We worked out in a crossfire (almost) hurricane. The PAX howled in the drivin’ rain (sprinkle). But it’s all right now…

    Warm Up

Micro mosey over to Grass Sticker Field.

    Mountain Climbers x 20
    Imperial Walkers x 20
    Grass Grabbers x 20
    LBCs x 20
    Self Love x 10

    Bear Crawlathon ‘19

Mosey to the power station along the Uptowner track. The mission was to complete a Bear Crawl Indian Run back to the rock pile (wash, rinse, repeat for approx. 1/8 mile) including the following exercises:

    Merkins x 10
    Russian Twist x 10
    Shoulder Taps x 10
    Hello Dolly x 10
    Plank Jacks x 10

Micro mosey back to the flag

This being YHC’s very first Q, there was a desire not to disappoint. And judging by all of the grumbling, the beatdown at the Uptowner was an unqualified success.

  • Rev Sox is not winning immunity

Called to fill in for Darkwing Duck (YHC continues to anxiously awaits his VQ when F3NOLA will truly get dangerous for the first time), YHC set out to lead a traditional slow-paced no running workout for the Pax at the Uptowner. Disclaimer was given and we were off.

    Warm-Up

    SSH – 27

    Hillbillies – 20

    Inchworms – 10

    Side lunges – 15

    LSS – 20

    The Thang

    Purgatory

The Pax grabbed our rocks for the morning and walked past the first baseball field to spend a little time in purgatory. This is YHC’s new name for a workout created by Triple Shift. While holding your coupon drop to one knee, then down on both knees, get back up one foot at a time. Once up, take one lunge step with each leg. Repeat until the Pax crosses the field to the tree line.

    Pull-ups

The Pax took our rocks to the playground for two pull-up races. We split into two teams of 3. Starting with the largest team member and ending with the smallest, each person did 3 pull-ups, went to the back of the line, then each did 2 and finished with each doing a single pull-up. The first team to finish wins.

Team awesome (Gatsby, Boo Boo, and Rev Sox) narrowly beat team not awesome (Rougarou, Hand Grenada, Vanilla) in the race.

The second race was dead man hangs. This competition was based on which team could hang the longest. The team members not hanging did rows and curls with their rocks while waiting. YHC learned that he would never win immunity challenges in Survivor this morning. Boo Boo hung a long time allowing YHC to have a massive time advantage against Vanilla as the last person on each team to hang. This should have been a second easy win for team awesome against team not awesome. YHC just didn’t have the strength of will to hang longer than Vanilla giving team not awesome the win. (YHC has yet another reason to never apply to be on Survivor.)

    Partner Work

The Pax partnered up for some Partner Shrugs (20 count) and Partner Curls (20 count). Then as partners the Pax went for 20 underdogs underneath the swings.

    People’s Chair

The Pax took our rocks and sat down on the tennis court fences for 3 sitting session. Each sit came with curls in cadence (15, 10, 6).

    Mary

    Wife Pleasers – 20

    O Dolly – 15

    Penguins – 15

    LBC – 20

    Hello Dolly – 15

    COT

Count off, Name-O-Rama, announcements, intentions, and prayer

Thanks for the opportunity to lead, it’s been a while since YHC had the opportunity at the Uptowner.

  • Back to Basics – but No Merkins

While in awe at the number of Merkins the ISI folks had been posting during the month, QIC decided that it was time to give the group a break and work on other basic exercises this fine morning.

Warmup: 20 SSHs, 20 Imperial Walkers, 20 Mountain Climbers, 15 Abe Vigodas, 30 Arm Circles (15 forward, 15 back).

We grabbed a rock and moseyed over to the track where we split up into teams of two to complete a Dora (with QIC going solo until joined by Chips riding in hot) for upper body strength.

One partner started on 100 reps of Triceps Press, 200 reps Curls, 300 reps Chest Presses, while the other partner ran to the 50 yard line and back.

Next, we formed a circle for some modified leg and core work Tabata, doing a cycle of 1 minute of each with 20 seconds rest in between of Squats, LBCs, Lunges, and Flutterkicks. Rinse and repeat.

We returned our rocks, gathered for announcements and intentions and moseyed off to start our day. Thanks for allowing me to lead.

  • A-B-C, Easy as 1-2-3 1

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to Me, Happy Birthday to Da Parish, Happy Birthday to me.   YHC is not sure who started this tradition of Qing a PAX special day, but the gloom was not the first thing I wanted to greet on the first day of my 37th year.   But alas, I put my name on the spreadsheet, as I do every year.

    The Thang

    • A – Abe Vigoda
    • B – Burpee

    • R – Rosalita (while we listen to Bruce Springsteen’s Rosalita)
    • S – Seal Jack’s
    • T – Travoltas (while we listened to the BeeJee’s Staying Alive)
    • U – Up Straddle Hop (1 legged SSH)
    • V – V Ups

Thanks were given to the Sky Q for the ability to better ourselves this morning and give strength & patience to those who need it. Closed with the serenity prayer.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead, SYITG,

    Da Parish, age 36

  • 5 Stud Poker

    5 Stud Poker

5 Studs showed up for some F3 Poker this morning. But first the disclaimer…”If you or someone you know has a gambling problem….”

    Warm-up

A standard Hawgcycle warm-up, start with SSH to 31 then loosen the hips with some Imperial Walkers. Next, stretch the Hammies with some Abe Vigodas. Then make everyone get down on the ground for some Peter Parkers and back up for some grass grabbers to continue to stretch the hammies. (Note to Amnesty: I would have taken care of you) Then grab a rock and mosey to the tree-line by the outer track.

    The Thang
    Round 1: Five Card Stud

My newly arrived F3 Deck of Death was sitting on a bench 50+ yards away. Bear crawl to the deck and draw a card. Jog back. Repeat until you have 5 cards. You can fold your hand or play. Folding earns you 10 penalty burpees. If you play and lose you get 15 penalty burpees. If you win, you get to return the cards to the bench at your leisure, shuffle them and return to the pax after doing zero burpees.

Boo Boo and Left Eye folded. Darkwing Duck won the first hand with a pair of Kings. We went ahead and did all of the exercises in Darkwings Hand

    • King of Clubs – 25 American Hammers
    • King of Hearts – 25 Mountain Climbers
    • 4 of Diamonds – 14 Carolina Dry Docks
    • 7 of Hearts – Bear Crawl – 40 yards
    • 5 of Clubs – 15 Oblique Crunches (Both Sides)

We then did our penalty burpees as Darkwing returned the deck to the bench.

    Round 2: Five Card Draw

Sprint to the deck (50+ yards) and draw a card. Jog back to the start. Repeat until you have a hand of 5 cards. Same penalty rules apply, but this time you can draw extra cards at a cost of 5 burpees per card. Left Eye and Darkwing folded, taking their 10 penalty burpees. Boo Boo drew one card at a cost of 5 burpees. YHC and Tool, flying in the face of pure logic and common sense, each drew 3 cards at a cost of 15 burpees. While YHC, Tool, and Boo Boo sprinted to the deck and paid our burpee cost for drawing cards, Darkwing Duck led Left Eye in a round of LBCs. Boo Boo was drawing for a straight and ended with a 10 high, so he took 10 burpees and folded. YHC put up my Ace high against Tools pair of Aces – 15 burpees for me.

Round 3: Five Card Stud (Fives are wild)

The last round was dealer’s choice. We sprinted to the deck and Tool dealt us each five cards calling the fives as wild. We sprinted back to the start and commenced the round. Darkwing, Tool, and YHC all folded, taking the 10 burpee penalty. Left Eye Lopez had a wild five and beat Boo Boo with a pair of Aces. Before we did the penalty burpees we did a couple of exercises from Left Eye’s hand.

    • 6 of Clubs – Mission Impossible (60 seconds)
    • 7 of Hearts – Bear Crawl (40 yards)

We finished our penalty burpees while Left Eye moseyed back to gather the cards and various things I left on the bench. Then it was back to the flag.

    The Skinny
    • Ridiculously low numbers to day, circa 2018. Was it the ISI or the fact that I was the Q. I’m telling myself it was the ISI. I’m sure the Lakeview Clown Cars were piling up the points at WPM, but where was the Old Metairie Krewe?
    • Tool, being the HIM that he is, went to Amnesty’s house to pick him up for the workout. Amnesty, being the fartsacker that he is, didn’t show.
    • I got the feeling that I should not play real poker with Darkwing Duck.
    • If nothing else, we got better at bear crawls today.
    • Lefty Eye was not pleased with the 75 yard rock mosey we started with to get to the playing field. Mr. Lopez, I am now deeming you the official Uptowner Compliance Officer. Your job is to make sure the Q adheres to the spirit of the Uptowner. Any violations should bring public chastisement and humiliation. I can tell you that Mambi will be a problem when he comes back. Start chastising him now.
  • Better late than never Backblast – we put the “Ab” in Abacus

YHC enjoyed the Easter weekend with Friends and Family and was a bit tardy with this backblast. Well off we go. YHC wanted the workout to focus on our “ABS”. Also wanted to focus on some pull-ups as I don’t think we do these often enough.

On to the warmup as follows: (probably off a bit on some of the counts)

Windmills x 15, Grassgrabbers x 15, Self love – arm stretch (ode to Hawgcycle) (this brought some mumble chatter from the PAX), SSH x 15, Peter Parkers x 15, Nolan Ryan x 15 each side, Low slow squats x 15

Grab a rock and mosey to the playground – on top of the wood chips.

THANG 1 – YHC wanted a new exercise combo so we did a Febreeze – 2 Big Boy sit-ups then 10 air presses. Increase sit-ups by one and air presses by 10 until the last round we did 9 Big Boy sit-ups and 100 air presses. Somewhere along the way we lost count but finished strong.

THANG 2 – YHC continues with the Ab theme – each PAX does 10 pull-ups. While waiting for the pull up bars, all other PAX are doing flutter kicks on your own.

THANG 3 – Bench presses 5 count followed by 10 LBC’s. Increase bench press by 5 and LBC’s by 10 until we did 25 presses and 50 LBC’s.

THANG 4 – repeat of thang 2 – more pull ups and flutter kicks.

    THANG 5 – random exercise – 100 monkey humpers

THANG 6 – bench presses with rock, combined with more flutter kicks

Bring rocks back to the pile – close it out with some Yoga type stretches with guidance from Triple Shift. I think we each did about 892 flutter kicks. COT, name-a-roma – FNG Prodigal Son, and closing prayer from War Eagle. Impromptu coffeteria due to Easter holiday for some fellowship was a great way to end the morning.

Thanks again to all – SYITG.

  • RED Friday: The Wittman Hero WOD

Our prayers go out to our brother Hawg as his mother went home to Jesus Christ after a battle with cancer. Pray for Hawg’s family and especially his father during this time.

Since Hawg is returning from Arkansas today, YHC picked up the Q for our monthly RED Friday Hero WOD at the Uptowner. YHC searched through Crossfit and F3 workouts for the ideal Hero WOD this morning. After some searching, the perfect workout was discovered.

On Feb. 4, 2018, Hawg led the first RED Friday workout at the Uptowner with a grand total of 4 participants: Hawg, Big Rock, Little Rock, and the Wall. Hawg muscled through the workout as the Lone Ranger and finished the goal of 7 rounds. Since Hawg was out of town, YHC thought it was appropriate to give the Wittman WOD a second go.

    The Warmup

    28 SSH

20 Hillbillies (YHC’s form was better than ever after spending two days in Paragould, AR with Hawg’s clan)

    15 Side Lunges

    The Thang

15 Kettlebell swings with a little rock

15 Power Cleans with a big rock

15 box jumps on the Uptowner Wall

    Goal: 7 rounds

    The Results

Today’s results are a testament to the importance of pushing one another to improve and iron sharpening iron. None of today’s Pax is in the same league as Hawg. Most workouts Hawg stands out as a man among boys as he leads in his flip-flops. YHC was certain all would fail to finish since Hawg only completed 7 rounds last Feb. Everyone hit 8. Hand Grenada finished 9. YHC finished 9 minus the box jumps on the last round. Fast Tax and Riggs finished 8 rounds. My assumption is the accountability of the Pax adds 2 rounds (maybe 3).

    The Honor

Today’s workout was in honor of U.S. Army Sergeant Jeremiah Wittman, 26, of Darby, MT, assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based out of Fort Carson, CO, was killed on February 13, 2010 , when insurgents attacked his unit with a roadside bomb in Zhari province, Afghanistan.

He is survived by his daughters Miah and Ariauna, wife Karyn, siblings Robert H., Charity, Jenell, and Natasha, father Robert, and mother Cynthia Church.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead. Be in prayer for Hawg’s family and Fast Tax as his father struggles with Parkinson and Dementia.

  • Old School

It’s been awhile since YHC was at The Uptowner.  Inertia–and the ability to fartsack for another ten minutes–had been drawing him to Wolf Pack Mountain for many weeks, as it’s just a stone’s throw (well, if Mahatma is throwing stones, not YHC) from YHC’s home.  So back to roots for an old school Beatdown with a PAX of eleven.

  • Spartan Redux Adieu

After finishing the Spartan Super in Alabama last Saturday, I had a great deal to be thankful for. Although I didn’t train enough for the mileage and obstacles, the base of fitness that I gained through F3 was exceptional. Given that most of the beatdowns are 45 – 60 minutes, I was surprised at how well Hokie Pokey, Fracsac and I did for this grueling race. 8.5 miles and 25 obstacles. We all missed at least 6 obstacles and which comes with a pleasant 30 burpee penalty. That’s right, 180 burpees for me and I believe 240 burpees for Fracsac and Hokie Pokey. Although, on paper, it seems impossible, we were all thankful for the F3 NOLA Pax that kept us accountable in our training.

    THE THANG

No warmup, just grab a rock and three (3) water buckets (35 lbs) and proceed around the park on the path. We walk briskly around the park and do a series of exercises at random intervals.

30 SSH IC, 30 Mountain Climbers IC, Lunge Walk x 2 on the ramp by the baseball stadium, 30 Burpees, a flow exercise to stretch our hip flexors in a lunge position and the bottom, mid and top floor elevator. As we get back to the rock pile, you guesed it….30 burpees and 15 Red Sun / Yellow Sun Supermans IC.

Countoff, Namerama and COT. Encouraged to see all the new Qs leading and I encouraged the four PAX members (Fast Tax, Scantron, Vanilla and Grimace) who haven’t Qed a workout to plan on it in the near future.
