  • 610 Coastie

YHC has been having frequent knee pain since the Gnarly Nutria victory, self diagnosed Patellofemoral Syndrome.  Most doctors call for RICE (rest, ice, compress, elevate); YHC is trying MICE (movement, ice, compress, elevate).   Rather than pounding the pavement, it was time to get back in the saddle.   Through the technological miracle of GroupMe, YHC put out a call for cyclist to join him at the 610 stomp for a bike ride.

Heisenberg would lead out the runners while YHC would lead the ride.  Only one PAX would answer the call and that was enough.  Amnesia showed up on none other than an BCBS NOLA Blue Bike.   YHC was mounted on his Trianthlon Bike and thought for sure that Amensia would be left in the dust.   Little did YHC know that this PAX could ride!

    The Ride – 11.25mi, 39:15, Avg Speed 17.2 mph.

  • 610 Stomp #99 – Let the Celebration Begin

    Conditions:  Temp – 79,  Humidity – 90%, Wind – 1 mph from the SSW.

7 men posted for the 100th running of the 610 Stomp.  (I realize the title says #99, that’s because SFx made us run #18 twice).

Today was a shout out to the most important day in 610 Stomp History, Stomp #14 on 11/17/2015, when Tool took the Q and altered the route.  Tool decided that we would exit the park by the museum and run down the Bayou (Moss St.).  Tool suggested that we run to an area that at that time had a statue of Jefferson Davis on it.  That would be roughly 4.18 miles give or take 2 hundredths.  We completed that route and I don’t think we have ever gone back to the old one.

    The Thang

Today’s instructions were to run as much of the route as you could in 40 minutes, getting back in time for a very special seal the deal.  Puddles, the only canine to every post at an F3 Nola workout has posted 13 times.  The Pax were asked to name the 12 men that have posted at the Stomp more times than Puddles.  1 burpee to honor each man, with a 5 penalty burpee if you shout out the wrong name.  We had about 5 misfires.  Here is the list of the top 12 all-time 610 Stomp Posters.

    1.  Tool
    2. Amnesty
    3. Rudy
    4. Jingle Vader
    5. SFx
    6. Hawg
    7. Shorty
    8. Cowbell
    9. Fracsac
    10. Kimchi
    11. Griswold
    12. OSHA

    • The Stomp was created to train for the Spartan Race in Alabama.  I never really imagined that it would still be going 2 years later.  T-claps to Tool, Amnesty, SFx, Jingle Vader, and Rudy for making sure it had staying power.
    • Two people in the top 12 don’t even live in Louisiana.  Impressive on their part.
    • I think Cowbell is the only one on the list that was an FNG at the Stomp, although OSHA may have been also – but I can’t find any historical records for his FNG post.
    • We’ve had at least 4 guys from out of town AOs post at the Stomp, and one, F3 Beetle from Atlanta, has posted twice.
    • At least one of those four out of towners was still drunk when he posted.
    • Surge Qd the only 610 Stomp he has ever posted at – a 100% Q rating.
    • T-claps to Tool for coming up with the Bayou route.  It is infinitely better than what we had before.
    • T-claps to Triple Shift and Da Parish for joining us from the Coastie to seal the deal and end with a COT together.

  • Bucktown Coastie – Laying Bricks

The key to a good structure (IMHO) is a sturdy brick foundation.   This morning, we laid bricks at the Coastie

    The Thang

    • Pax 1 runs up lakefront trail and back around. ~.5 mile (timer)
    • Pax 2 rides Bike Trainer
    • Pax 3 & 4 perform Mary OYO

Everyone got in around 3 sets prior to the clock running out.  Announcements, Intentions, Ball of Man.  TClaps to Moped & Triple Shift for riding more after.

Moleskin – Triple Shift and I are looking for a Triathlon CSAUP.  More than likely, something w/ a sprint option (shortest distance).  Please let us know if you’re interested.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead,

  • Shake Down the Thunder – Bucktown Coastie

The Coastie was a one Pax this morning.  YHC rolled to the trail at precisely 5:30 am; nodded off to the sky Q and made his way. In total the ride was 14.77 miles and the average speed was 15.2 mph (however the mid miles were averaging 16.5).   YHC rode alone, neither passing or being passed.   Upon reaching the Seabrook Bridge a thought came.  “Can I make it to the stomp for Mary?”

YHC dropped the ring and damn well tried.   The fast route between 2 points is a straight line.   YHC turned south on Franklin Ave, west on Leon C. Simon, south on Paris….

Then YHC saw the most monumental and beautiful edifice ever built.  There she was standing before him in brazen red brick and shimmering windows.   The roar of the Tiger called out to him.  He could feel the Navy Blue and Old Gold Coursing through his veins.   The azelas were starring in his soul, saying “we shall bloom bolder this year”.   The gazebo called his name and said “I will shelter you.”  Palms swayed in the breeze as if they were singing the Alma Mater, “…Holy Cross, we hail thee, tender, strong, and true.”   The bell tower struck 0600, and YHC knew that he was not going to make it to the Stomp, but, what a sight worth missing it for.

The remainder of the ride was west on Filmore, south on Marconi, west on Harrison and back to YHC’s M & shorties.  All are welcome to the Coastie, and boys who are looking to become men are welcome to 5500 Paris Ave.

    Da Parish, Class of ’01

Moleskin:  Below is the mission statement of Holy Cross School.  It’s not too far off course from being a Q.

“The Holy Cross Man is a refined gentleman who lives by Faith. Devoted to his soul’s welfare, he reflects often on God. His daily actions are sanctified by prayer, the practice of virtue and manly piety. Since sanctity is his goal, he has a deep devotion to Our Lord, to Our Lady and to St. Joseph, patron of his school.

The Holy Cross Man is studious. He regards learning as a duty; intellectual perfection as an honor. He knows that his school is his training ground where he must mold himself into a useful man.

The Holy Cross Man is loyal to God and Country. Devotion to his school and his teachers is demonstrated by his cooperation, zeal and spirit. He is a friend of all because he is a member of the Mystical Body of Christ.

In a word, he is a man of faith and honesty, of strength of character through self-mastery, of respect for the Christian family and lawful authority, of leadership in the pursuit of the true, the good and the beautiful – that is the Holy Cross Man.”

  • 2 Pax at the Coastie

A PAX of 2 gathered in the gloom.   Lights on, clipped in, ready to ride Lakeshore Dr. Loop.   ~14mi ride for each rider, averaging 16-17mph.  Great ride!!!  Fat Tires welcomed!!!

Moleskin – If you are intimidated by the road riders, sign up for a Q and slow them down.   We welcome the change of pace.

  • Superstar Bucktown Coastie

Three Pax rolled to the gloom with the mission of self-improvement.   HAPPY HOLY WEEK!   This week’s Gospel, be it ever long, was the Passion of the Christ.  Several films have been made to illustrate the rise, “fall”, and rise again of Jesus Christ.  This week, bless yourself with the opportunity to watch one or several of these films.   YHC’s personal suggestions include, The Passion of the Christ, and his number one favorite, Jesus Christ Superstar.   That’s right.   This rock opera gives the perspectives of Jesus, Judas, Mary, Peter in the form of fantastic harmonies, jam out dancing, and attire that anyone we RESPECT would have had in their closet (I’m looking at you JV).

    The Thang

    ·       Ride Lakeshore Dr to the turn around and back.   YHC will play Jesus Christ Superstar from a speaker on his bike.

The Pax kept up together most of the way for rocking ~14 miles with an average speed of 16.8 mph.  Not too shabby.

    ·       New Orleans Regional Leadership Program is currently offering info session into the 2018 cohort.   (there is no finder’s fee for me).   If you fancy yourself a leader in the community, which as Qs and men of F3 we all are, I encourage everyone to attend the info session.   http://norli.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/NorliRecruitmentFlyer-copy.pdf

  • Bucktown Coastie is Changing the World

A Pax of 2 gathered at the lake front gloom for a total of 4 wheels and 2 great minds.   Count Off, NAMEORAMA, Announcements

    ·       The Basin Run is still happening even though YHC is still on run IR

    ·       The Big Easy Triathlon was cancelled by the organizers due to road construction.   YHC is looking for another CSAUPS to replace this one.   I’m all ears.

Pray – This upcoming Sunday is Palm Sunday and beginning of Holy Week.  YHC was born and is still practicing Catholic.   Catholics are told that during Lent, you are supposed to give up or sacrifice something.   YHC, always had a problem with “not doing something”, but rather wanted to use Lent to DO SOMETHING.   In the past, YHC has gone to extra mass or way of the cross.  This year, it was all about being a better dad and role model.   For the last week of Lent, keep up your sacrifice, but also remember to DO SOMETHING that makes you a stronger Q.

    The Thang

    ·       W/U ride to Okwata.  Get those legs pumping at ~90rpms

    ·       4 minute circuits – 1 min 90 rpm (medium/strong effort), 1 min 100 rpm (hard/90% effort), 2 min recover – RINSE & REPEAT till time

All together I believe we completed 6 circuits.  During the recovery, YHC & the PAX had plenty of great mumble chatter opportunity about life, politics, and leadership; and ,we are going to solve the world’s problem….one gloom at a time.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead,

    Da Parish

  • Bucktown Coastie #6 – Late and Alone

A Pax of one rolled up to the trail at 8:32. Was the Q late?  Yes.  Did his Pax leave without him?  Possibly.  What should he do?  Well, YHC waiting until 8:35, did a very quick count, namorama, prayer to the Sky Q for a safe ride and shoved off.

    The Thang

    • 10 minute w/u ride to Okwata
    • 1 min left leg only
    • 1 min right leg only
    • 1 min both legs
    • Find a comfortable gear on the big ring and ride at 90 RPM (rotations per minute)
    • Cross over Bayou St John bridge and switch to the big ring

Adjust your back gear to affect your RPMs

    • 1 min 90 RPM, 1 min 85 RPM
    • 2 min 90 RPM, 2 min 80 RPM
    • 3 min 90 RPM, 3 min 75 RPM
    • 4 min 90 RPM, 4 min 70 RPM (like biking through the tough mudder)

Get back in the small ring for a c/d ride home.

During the ride, YHC was joined by another lone wolf, probably due to my tasty tunes coming from my speaker.   Together we rode from UNO to the end of Lakeshore Dr. & back.   YHC shared the glory that is F3 with him and hopefully a full headlock will happen at the next Coastie.

Thank you for letting me lead….sort of

  • Beware of Loose Shorts and Fat Tires

Last week I added the Coastie to the Q sheet and jumped on the first available Q.  After today, you may not want that to happen again.  To prevent it sign up to Q here, dates are available for the rest of the year.

So I rolled in with my cargo shorts, fat tires, spoke lights, and safety vest ready to lead a group of guys that actually know what they are doing on a bicycle and look the part.  Much to my pleasure, one of my own was there waiting for me.  JV must have heard that a fellow fat tire had the lead today and came out to show his support.  YHC started things off with the COT – cause that’s how we roll at the Coastie.  After counting to 7 and providing our names, YHC reminded the Pax that today is Valentine’s Day and in that vein shared a part of DREDDs Q-source on the M.  The point that I stressed is that in our relationship with our wives, we are either accelerating or decelerating.  If we consider ourselves in maintenance mode, then we are decelerating.  “The Q never thinks of maintaining his marriage. He always focuses on Accelerating it.”

    The Thang

Warm up – Ride to Causeway (1.75 miles) and then re-group for further instruction.  At least that was the plan, but not well executed by the Q.  At Causeway we happened upon a barricade.  Da Parrrrrrish surmised that it must be for vehicles and not bikes, since there was just enough room for a bike to pass.  This seemed like perfect logic so we pressed on.  As we came to the top of the levee we saw two lights that we thought might be the POPO.  It wasn’t, just two fellow bikers.   They warned us of another barricade at Cleary (how you know where Cleary is while you are on the lake?  I’m not sure.)

Tabata on Wheels – after regrouping I instructed the pax to do 4 minutes of Tabata – 20 second sprint and 10 second coast; repeat 8 times.  I planned to start this at Causeway, but while we were talking to the Not POPO, JV took off, fat tires and all.  So the first part of the workout became catching up to JV.  By the time we caught him we figured we were close enough to Cleary that we should pass that barricade before starting Tabata.

Once we finally started it was glorious.  7 bikers sprinting as hard as they can for 20 second intervals on a narrow lakefront trail in the dark while passing bikers and runners both ways.  At one point, one of the oncoming bikers called one of us by name.  It must have been a birth name, because I didn’t recognize it.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSC3Z1a-sbg

I adhere to Tool’s philosophy that we should try anything once (except folk dancing and incest).  I think the Tabata on wheels is worth trying again, but take that with a grain of salt.  I also think working out with the Police Barricades and doing Yoga are worth trying again.

For the rest of the workout, it was everyone at their own pace to the casino.  At the Treasure Chest YHC met up with Da Parish, Triple Shift, Woz, and Moped.  Apparently Bongo and JV turned around earlier, or were arrested by the POPO, or beat up by some other bikers….I don’t know.  Triple Shift and Woz carried on to the next parish, while the rest of us headed back toward Bucktown.

Thanks for letting me lead and remember – if you enjoy the Coastie, sign up to Q.
