  • 2024 Rock City Review – from Hawgcycle

Conditions: Thick Gloom, 52 degrees, 95% Humidity, Wind 2.0 mph from SSW

Ten men met in a thick fog for a Rock City 2024 Year End Review.

    Warm-up:
    • SSH x 20
    • Abe Vigoda x 10 – We did them slooooow like they are supposed to be done
    • Grass Grabbers x 10 – The natural follow-up
    • Crab Cakes x 10 – Why do we just touch our knee? Can we change that in 2025?
    • Tai Fighters x 10 – Quality stretch for the knee. Similar to the stretch you get from standing

    The Thang:
Today was the 53rd Monday of 2024 and you are reading the 29th RC BB of the year. That leaves 24 Mondays without a BB. We did a burpee for each.

Moment of Silence for the Schaff Family, who were involved in a car accident and lost April Schaff at the beginning of the year.

Triple Shift’s Mini-Cooper. In February, Triple Shift wanted to do a Cooper (10 burpees, 10 Squats, 10 Merkins, and a 400m run, followed by 9 burpees, 9 Squats, 9 Merkins, another 400m run, continue counting down to 1 rep of each). A wet track thwarted his plans and he modified. Today we did the round of 10 and the round of 9.

We moseyed to the Rock Pile, remembering the time Fast Tax sterilized himself jumping the fence by the playground. We all took the gate by the parking lot.

Architect’s Manniversary Workout – We recreated a portion of this workout.
    • Architect – 12 Thrusters
    • Hawg – 12 Curls, Architect – 10 Thrusters
    • Vagabond – 10 Lunge twists, Hawg – 10 Curls, Architect – 8 Thrusters
    • Mr. Rogers – 10 Hell Raisers, Vagabond – 10 Lunge Twists, Hawg – 8 curls, Architect – 6 Thrusters

Mosey with the Rock to the Flag

Hand Grenada’s Rock Mile – One of the backblasts was a hand written note on the back of a McDonald’s napkin that someone found and entered into the computer for Hand Grenada. It detailed a mile around the track carrying the rock and doing exercises every quarter mile. We started with 10 chest presses, ran ¼ mile and did 10 OH Presses, ran ¼ mile and did 10 squats.

Mosey back to the rock pile where we dropped off the rock and walked backwards to the flag

    NMM
Overall we had a good year at Rock City. I was pleasantly surprised that there were 28 completed backblast. I think most people would have taken the under on that number. We still have lots of room for improvement. As many of the men spoke about in the COT: let’s reach out and encourage the guys that haven’t posted in a while, let’s try to get new men to come out, let’s be more fit at the end of 2025 than the beginning, and let’s make sure that we are investing in ourselves and those around us throughout the year. There is no reason we shouldn’t have 20 men on the regular at Rock City. Let’s make it happen.

  • Route 66 kinda – from Hokie

17 Pax posted including Maverick & Minnow up range from Tampa and an FNG, Goblin

Warmorama included 56th birthday greetings for Bogey, grassgrabbers, Abe Vigodas & arm circles

First 48% of the workout was a twist on Route 66… skipped 1 and started with 2 so we had route 65 for my 65th birthday

From bricks to trees, starting with two Honest Merkins (Hand release at bottom and shoulder taps at top) then back to benches to do dips until all Pax were in PLUS 56 seconds for Bogey’s 56th birthday… then mosey to next tree for Three Honest Merkins and then back to benches for dips waiting on the six plus 56 seconds… after 3rd route of dips, the Q modified to steps ups… continue for remaining trees and route Sixty Five

for the remaining 52% of the workout, we paired up in teams of two for Dora with 100 burpees, 200 BBSU, 300 Squats

We concluded workout with 56’ of backwards lunges for Bogey’s 56th birthday

Thank you for the opportunity to spend my morning with a bunch of HIMs… I am a blessed man!!!

4 OGs were present- Hawgcycle, Reluctant Yankee, Triple Shift, and Redfish

  • 12 do Rim 2 Rim and 3 do Renny – from Hokie

While not sure about the status of the 12 PAX doing Rim 2 Rim, but for the 3 of us (Maytag, Monopoly, and YHC) at Renny, we arrived just before first light at 6:33. We got there well before sunrise at 6:57, with good air quality and a pleasant 74-degree morning and relatively low humidity.

The stage was set for a fantastic morning workout at Renny!

On a slow evening at Charlie’s, I checked my phone to see who had the Q at Renny. I wasn’t surprised to see “NEEDS Q” on the calendar while 12 Pax were away enjoying the Grand Canyon. Feeling the need for coffee, I took the Q and started to wonder, what do we do on 10.06.24?

First, the Warm-up our warm-up routine should be comprehensive and well thought out, preparing everyone for the workout ahead so we included neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, arm circles, slow Vigodas, ankle rolls, and self-love… then what?

And then a thought popped into my mind, how many days until Christmas 😉

With a nice even 80 days, the plan evolved.

We planned trips around NOMA with 4 stops and 20 reps at each stop, hoping the four stops with 20 reps each is a solid way to keep the energy up, while still easy peasy and not requiring much brainwave activity.

Then to maintain camaraderie, rounds would all start together, and at the end, pax would do low slow squats, waiting on six plus one minute when all were at the fountain so we could start the next round together. The focus on waiting for the six; helps foster a sense of community while allowing the fittest members to still get some exercise while waiting on me.

    Shoulder Taps (One is One)
    Star Toe Taps
    Honest Merkins
    Big Boy Sit-ups

In round four, we stopped at the back of NOMA to knock out the required Sunday Mornings before continuing to finish the round.

We closed out with COT, including praying for our 12 PAX in the Grand Canyon and all those impacted by the last hurricane and those who would be impacted again this week with the impending hurricane.

  • Earned Coffeeteria on National Coffee Day – from Hokie

10 Pax gathered at NOMA to earn coffeeteria rights on National Coffee Day

Because YHC was the Q, you know the workout would be very simplistic.

    After disclaimer, Warm-o-rama consisted of
    Roll head clockwise
    Roll head counterclockwise
    Shoulder shrugs forward
    Shoulder shrugs backwards
    Arm circles forward
    Arm circles backwards
    Slow Vigodas
    Ankle turns
    Self love

    The Thang —

10 Honest Merkins – Lunge across NOMA – 100 of *Exercise* – Lap NOMA

    *Exercise* changed each Round
    1. Step ups
    2. calf raises
    3. deep squats
    4. big boy sit ups

After a Pax finished their lap of NOMA the returned to fountain area to do step ups while waiting on the six, at which point the Q started his timer for just 2 more minutes of step ups

  • It’s only 10 rounds with Hokie – from Hokie

YHC has been less than consistent in attending F3, as is obvious to all, and is subject to criticism for FartSacking and having the audacity to attend coffee or book studies without earning his attendance priviledges.

Nonetheless, Catfish asked me one Saturday or Sunday about a month prior if I could muster the energy to commit to Q and I accepted his challenge.

After a brief disclaimer at the flag, we moseyed while lifting knees to chest over to the pavilion for Warm-o-rama including Slow Vigodas, grass grabbers and arm circles.

The Thang… in my mind it would only be 10 rounds by the great lawn with 5 burpees at each of the four corners and our mode of transportation between corners would be backwards mosey on long stretch by parking lot, lunges by Storyland, forward mosey by City Putt and an exercise at the end of fourth corner changing round by round. Keeping with the concept of leave no man behind, instructions were only given out one round at a time and those who finished first could plank and shoulder tap waiting on the six to start the next round.

    Round 1 ~ 100 Honest Merkins … obviously a crowd favorite 😉
Round 2 ~ it gets easier ~ only 90 step ups and even easier yet one is one
Round 3 ~ getting even easier ~ only 80 Big Boi Sit Ups
    Round 4 ~ 70 Bobby Hurley’s
    Round 5 ~ 60 star toe taps

Obviously, YHC’s lack of consistent attendance slowed down the Pax as we were only able to complete 5 of the 10 rounds.

Thanks to Catfish for giving me the opportunity to lead and wishing each of you the very best. See ya when I can get my butt outta bed.

  • Return of the Yippee Bag – from Rudy

Late August – it means the dog days of summer, the never ending sun, heat and humidity. But fortunately, it also means the annual Yippee Bag workout! 3 FNGs (including YHC’s nephew) joined 18 regulars for the annual celebration of … Me.

First: Disclaimer. I did better than I did on Thursday, when I forgot it entirely. But this time, even with the FNGs, I barely got any coherent sentence out. “Be safe. mutter mutter mumble.” But eventually, with the help of other PAX – we got the message across to everyone.

Circle up on the Great Lawn (after dropping some coupons on the sidelines) for a warm up. Stretching, SSH, IW. Then explain the rules of the Yippee Bag: at any point in the workout, any PAX can reach in and pull something out. Might be a game, a contest, exercises, whatever. Whatever the card says, follow the instructions.

    The Thang: ….

Catfish is first to the Yippee Bag, pulling out a rousing game of Duck Duck Goose to get us started. Clearly, YHC is the slowest. Triple Shift thought he was fast, but could not catch Mr. Rogers (even though Mr. Rogers was slowed by a 30 lb weight vest).

Lets try this again: The Thang: Partner up for a Dora
100 Burpees, 200 Merkins, 300 Squats (or Big Boy Sit Ups, YHC was at times quite confused).

Lots of Yippee – War Eagle’s 2.0 Gideon seemed to enjoy it the most. Especially the Rifle Carry (he carrying a brick, Catfish with a Cinder Block). Burpees. Squat Jumps, Sit Ups. Slowly the yard is getting covered in used White Notecards.

A quick game of Freeze Tag. YHC Nephew lasted longest, while avoiding planked and frozen PAX.

This DORA is taking too long. Several of the Beasts finished and were waiting (Mahatma, Heisenberg, Mr. Rogers among others). But after 30 mins – time to call it and move on.

The Thang 3: Ladder BLIMPS. More burpees. And More Yippees. War Eagle back to the bag, pulling a Bear Crawl race followed immediately by a Crab Walk race. Meanwhile, the PAX are burpeeing, lunging, merkining. Sometimes because of BLIMPS, sometimes because of Yippees.

And there was much grumbling about sore arms. “When is it Leg Time?” seemed to be a common refrain. So fine.

The Thang 3: Groups of 3 – 1 PAX on the sideline Jump Squatting. 1 PAX halfway across holding Al Gore. 1 PAX bear crawling (with bricks) between them. Confusion, Alternating, at this point – YHC was all but immune to the gripes of the PAX. Just keep plowing along. 8 Count Body Builder cards are pulled.

Finally, giving in to peer pressure from YHC, his nephew goes to the Yippee Bag and pulls out the Crunch Frog card. Everyone on their 6, Crunchy Frog in cadence x21. Then we are out of time.

Back to the flag for the 5 Principles for the FNGs. Naming:
    * Sparky – just moved to St. Rose, an electrician. Took about 5 seconds
    * Burrow (later renamed to Breezy) – War Eagle’s son. Took about 20 seconds.
    * Sunshine – YHC’s nephew, sophomore at Jesuit. Took about 10 minutes.

    Thanks for letting me lead!

  • QThighs (champ) v QThumbWar (challenger) – from Mahatma

    The date Friday 8/16
The place Pontiff Playground – Metry LA
The event Thighs from the OG vs ThumbWar from parts of Lakeview and Metry

YHC wanted to get out early in case there were any pre bout instructions – the bullpen was dark except a lone silhouette planting a flag emerging quickly with an enthusiastic smile of pinewood ready for the battle. Then coming off the field ThumbWar with a determined look of a well trained challenger. YHC checked his watch with only 5 minutes there was just a handful of Pax and still no Thighs, yet within a minute the bullpen was crawling with Pax like ants on a misplaced foot at Okwata!

At 5:29 YHC suggested some general etiquette to help ensure the instructions were heard…..limit the “jaw jacking” or “jack jawing” the MS translation of Handgranada.

After quick disclaimer we were off on a Mosey to the rock pile. 3 minute warm up
    SSH
    Side Lunge
    Mnt Man Poopers
    Shoulder Taps

Round 1 ThumbWar – had pax team up and grap a medium rock then head to the field.
With cones in place some sort of Dora

Round 2 Thighs was still reminiscing over the Olympics to which we did a variation of exercises to each letter x 10 then x 5

Round 3 ThumbWar it’s a “core focus” hop stop exercise crawl stop exercise length of field – rinse and repeat

Round 4 Thighs (this is where I think the Pax was a bit unhinged in following instructions) still with a Olympics focus -sprint in place
    -back stroke
    -karate kick
    -merkin boxing

Time called with 4 minutes left YHC attempted a 1 minutes bonus round to ensure if there was a potential for a draw this may leave a lasting impression….so what do we get “stretching”!

On to COT – the vote wasn’t close 17-3, yet 3 of the 17 (RougaRou, Scantron and TripleShift) didn’t even participate but must have seen the action from their NOTs vantage point to emphasis there is still no repeat winner. Congrats to the new champ ThumbWar and much respect to Thighs for showing up in hostile territory with no OG support.

Next up ThumbWar vs Angie’s List 9/13 at WolfPack Mnt
