  • Blowing the Load! – from Mr Rodgers

Looked at the Q sheet late Sunday night, saw it was blank, and thought, “Why not?” That made it 3 Qs in 5 days—Friday, Monday, and apparently the unplanned birthday week I never asked for. Pax asked if I was celebrating something. Nope. Just motivated to drop the hammer repeatedly.

    Warm-Up (Rock Pile Style):
    Low very Slow Squats

    Abe Vigodas

    Hillbillys

    Peter Parkers

    Parker Peters

    Shoulder Taps

Partner up. Grab a rock. Let’s roll to Mr Rodgers playground.

    Round 1: The Bleacher Blaster
    Pax 1: Half bleacher run

    Pax 2: 5 Pull-ups, 10 Rock Thrusters, 15 Merkins, AMRAP Big Boys

    x3 sets each

Round 2: The Bear Crawl Beatdown
Pax 1: Bear crawl to the gym, run back

Pax 2: 5 Burpees, 10 Squats w/ Rock, 15 Push Press, AMRAP SSH

    x3 sets each

    Closing Chaos:
Rocks returned, then squeezed in fifteen 3-count Wife Pleasers—but in my excitement I counted in 4s. Charmin caught it. Of course he did.

Quick pigeon stretch for the dads with tight hips. Hand Grenada opted out, clearly too cool to stretch, choosing instead to crank LBCs like it’s spring break in Daytona.

Wrapped up at the flag with a solid prayer for those who didn’t wake up this morning. Also feeling slightly guilty for hogging the Q, I offered it up… and Hand Grenada stepped in to take El Diablo. Legend.

Oh—and word on the street is Hawg blew his load at 180 (a personal best). Proud of that guy. Pray for him.

  • Memorial Day Rock City 2025 – from Vagabond

pax worked with rocks under gazebo for 20 exercises @ 20 reps apiece

  • Rocky Balboa Returns (2-Year Manniversary Edition) – from Mr Rodgers

Backblast: Rocky Balboa Returns (2-Year Manniversary Edition)
    QIC: YHC
PAX: Too many to name, one less after Mustard’s ankle called it quits
Conditions: Dry skies (for once), humidity set to “drenched”

At 5:29 AM sharp, YHC gave a lightning-fast disclaimer (no actual lightning this time), and we were off to the rock pile. I instructed each PAX to choose a partner and a rock wisely—because no one wants to get stuck with a pebble… or a boulder.

    Warm-Up? Nope.
Due to distance and time management (and possibly because warm-ups are overrated), we skipped tradition. Instead:

Pax 1: 10 Side Straddle Hops

Pax 2: Rifle carry the rock to the beatdown zone
Switch and repeat until arrival. By the time we got there, Vagabond dropped a rock on Mayhem’s head, giving us a preview of the punishment to come. Shoulders were smoked. Mission accomplished.

    Exercise 1: “Rocky Balboa Returns”
Pax 1: Run bleachers with your rock

    Pax 2: AMRAP — 5 Burpees, 10 Merkins, 15 Squats, Big Boys

    x3 Each

💬 You’re the champ… until you drop the rock.
Spoiler: several PAX were dethroned early.

    Exercise 2: “Stairway to Suck”
Pax 1: Burpee broad jump at base, sprint up next stair set

    Pax 2: AMRAP — 5 Burpees, 10 Rock Thrusters, 15 SSH, LBCs

    x3 Each

💬 It looks like a stairway. It feels like doom.
Colonel Mustard’s ankle tapped out here. Respect.

    Exercise 3: “The Crawlinator”
Pax 1: Bear crawl up ramp, run stairs, crawl to next set

Pax 2: AMRAP — 5 Hellraisers, 10 Rock Squats, 15 Rock Shoulder Presses, Flutter Kicks

    x1 Each

💬 Now featuring puddles of sweat to make bleacher crawling extra sketchy.
Even YHC took off the weight vest. That says it all.

    Wrap-Up:
Kid Rock blared. Sweat flew. Rocks were dropped. Bodies collapsed. Intentions were lifted to the Lord Almighty, and we dispersed knowing we earned this manniversary.

Two years in, and still standing. Barely.

  • Cat Herding at El Diablo – from Fracsac

The Double Nickel week continued with 8 Pax joining YHC.

Hokie arrived with an FNG, adding to the already eclectic atmosphere at the flag. Thumb War was assigned to get to know the FNG throughout the workout and tell us about him at the COT.

Disclaimer given and mosey to the field for a warmup. Lots of confusion over the Star Wars themed movements. Hand Grenada and Bogey thought they were already at coffee with all the mumble chatter. YHC was losing the pax and somewhat disappointed but faith was restored when the pax properly identified the greatest exercise ever created. YHC completely recovered with the Squat Twist. That really seemed to get Bogey back in the game. HG seemed lost, probably looking for Mayhem. Opportunity was taken to throw in some Catalina Wine Mixers. Aquanet really liked those and was telling Kilo how they truly were the 2nd best exercise. Kilo simply responded that he could fly a plane now. CWMs have that effect.

Mosey to the corner of the field. YHC turned to see where the FNG was and realized he already shook Thumb War. He somehow sent him back to the flag. With HG looking for ghosts, The Architect was being drawn to the Bogey side. We quickly did 5 burpees at 11 different stations. Hokie pointed out that we did them at the cones and he was certain we did 55. Yes, yes we did.

Mosey to the rock pile. YHC told the pax there was a theme coming.

We did U-Hauls with the rock, followed by Rows. HG was mumbling to himself, the Architect and Bogey were sparring over Star Wars knowledge, and Hokie was looking for more cones. Aquanet and Kilo were making engine noises, not sure what that was about. But Thumbwar was back, which seemed to make our FNG a little disappointed.

Mosey to the playground for Pull Ups. This was turning into Cat Herding. Somehow got the pax to do 3 rotations of 3 x pull ups with planking.

Mosey to the KNOT steps. No sign of those guys.

First we did Everest, which is a lunge up the step and a squat, alternating.

Next was Elf on the Shelf.

    YHC asked for the theme.

    Burpees
    U-Hauls
    Rows
    Pull-ups
    Everest
    Elf on the Shelf

It took a while but we got there. Mosey back to the flag for COT.

Thumbwar did manage to get some info on the FNG. Marine Veteran and aspiring Chef. Welcome Mess Hall!!

Thanks for joining me and for the brotherhood.

  • 2024 Rock City Review – from Hawgcycle

Conditions: Thick Gloom, 52 degrees, 95% Humidity, Wind 2.0 mph from SSW

Ten men met in a thick fog for a Rock City 2024 Year End Review.

    Warm-up:
    • SSH x 20
    • Abe Vigoda x 10 – We did them slooooow like they are supposed to be done
    • Grass Grabbers x 10 – The natural follow-up
    • Crab Cakes x 10 – Why do we just touch our knee? Can we change that in 2025?
    • Tai Fighters x 10 – Quality stretch for the knee. Similar to the stretch you get from standing

    The Thang:
Today was the 53rd Monday of 2024 and you are reading the 29th RC BB of the year. That leaves 24 Mondays without a BB. We did a burpee for each.

Moment of Silence for the Schaff Family, who were involved in a car accident and lost April Schaff at the beginning of the year.

Triple Shift’s Mini-Cooper. In February, Triple Shift wanted to do a Cooper (10 burpees, 10 Squats, 10 Merkins, and a 400m run, followed by 9 burpees, 9 Squats, 9 Merkins, another 400m run, continue counting down to 1 rep of each). A wet track thwarted his plans and he modified. Today we did the round of 10 and the round of 9.

We moseyed to the Rock Pile, remembering the time Fast Tax sterilized himself jumping the fence by the playground. We all took the gate by the parking lot.

Architect’s Manniversary Workout – We recreated a portion of this workout.
    • Architect – 12 Thrusters
    • Hawg – 12 Curls, Architect – 10 Thrusters
    • Vagabond – 10 Lunge twists, Hawg – 10 Curls, Architect – 8 Thrusters
    • Mr. Rogers – 10 Hell Raisers, Vagabond – 10 Lunge Twists, Hawg – 8 curls, Architect – 6 Thrusters

Mosey with the Rock to the Flag

Hand Grenada’s Rock Mile – One of the backblasts was a hand written note on the back of a McDonald’s napkin that someone found and entered into the computer for Hand Grenada. It detailed a mile around the track carrying the rock and doing exercises every quarter mile. We started with 10 chest presses, ran ¼ mile and did 10 OH Presses, ran ¼ mile and did 10 squats.

Mosey back to the rock pile where we dropped off the rock and walked backwards to the flag

    NMM
Overall we had a good year at Rock City. I was pleasantly surprised that there were 28 completed backblast. I think most people would have taken the under on that number. We still have lots of room for improvement. As many of the men spoke about in the COT: let’s reach out and encourage the guys that haven’t posted in a while, let’s try to get new men to come out, let’s be more fit at the end of 2025 than the beginning, and let’s make sure that we are investing in ourselves and those around us throughout the year. There is no reason we shouldn’t have 20 men on the regular at Rock City. Let’s make it happen.

  • Route 66 kinda – from Hokie

17 Pax posted including Maverick & Minnow up range from Tampa and an FNG, Goblin

Warmorama included 56th birthday greetings for Bogey, grassgrabbers, Abe Vigodas & arm circles

First 48% of the workout was a twist on Route 66… skipped 1 and started with 2 so we had route 65 for my 65th birthday

From bricks to trees, starting with two Honest Merkins (Hand release at bottom and shoulder taps at top) then back to benches to do dips until all Pax were in PLUS 56 seconds for Bogey’s 56th birthday… then mosey to next tree for Three Honest Merkins and then back to benches for dips waiting on the six plus 56 seconds… after 3rd route of dips, the Q modified to steps ups… continue for remaining trees and route Sixty Five

for the remaining 52% of the workout, we paired up in teams of two for Dora with 100 burpees, 200 BBSU, 300 Squats

We concluded workout with 56’ of backwards lunges for Bogey’s 56th birthday

Thank you for the opportunity to spend my morning with a bunch of HIMs… I am a blessed man!!!

  • 12 do Rim 2 Rim and 3 do Renny – from Hokie

While not sure about the status of the 12 PAX doing Rim 2 Rim, but for the 3 of us (Maytag, Monopoly, and YHC) at Renny, we arrived just before first light at 6:33. We got there well before sunrise at 6:57, with good air quality and a pleasant 74-degree morning and relatively low humidity.

The stage was set for a fantastic morning workout at Renny!

On a slow evening at Charlie’s, I checked my phone to see who had the Q at Renny. I wasn’t surprised to see “NEEDS Q” on the calendar while 12 Pax were away enjoying the Grand Canyon. Feeling the need for coffee, I took the Q and started to wonder, what do we do on 10.06.24?

First, the Warm-up our warm-up routine should be comprehensive and well thought out, preparing everyone for the workout ahead so we included neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, arm circles, slow Vigodas, ankle rolls, and self-love… then what?

And then a thought popped into my mind, how many days until Christmas 😉

With a nice even 80 days, the plan evolved.

We planned trips around NOMA with 4 stops and 20 reps at each stop, hoping the four stops with 20 reps each is a solid way to keep the energy up, while still easy peasy and not requiring much brainwave activity.

Then to maintain camaraderie, rounds would all start together, and at the end, pax would do low slow squats, waiting on six plus one minute when all were at the fountain so we could start the next round together. The focus on waiting for the six; helps foster a sense of community while allowing the fittest members to still get some exercise while waiting on me.

    Shoulder Taps (One is One)
    Star Toe Taps
    Honest Merkins
    Big Boy Sit-ups

In round four, we stopped at the back of NOMA to knock out the required Sunday Mornings before continuing to finish the round.

We closed out with COT, including praying for our 12 PAX in the Grand Canyon and all those impacted by the last hurricane and those who would be impacted again this week with the impending hurricane.
