  • Run ‘n Ruck ‘n Fun 610 Stomp #90

YHC has been preoccupied for the last few weeks, and was thrilled to take on the lead at the 610 Stomp on this fine day.  What makes this day great you ask?  Well, the answer is obvious…..

YHC arrived in the gloom before all others, wondering who might show.  Would a flag arrive this fine morning?  Spoiler Alert – No Flag this fine day….VSF it is then…..

Three hard core and committed PAX came with rucksacks in tow, but all are welcomed at the 610 Stomp.  After a quick disclaimer, YHC gave instructions.  All runners go, and be back for 0605.  Ruckers drop your rucksacks and take a run to P.G.T. Beauregard and return to the VSF.  Which PAX did what?  Next time come and see…..
There would be no dry PAX this day!

Upon arrival back at the VSF, the ruckers donned their rucks and did some power rucking on the track.  All PAX came came together at 0605 at the track for:

    Merkins IC- 4 count  x 15
Mumble chatter about the PAX thinking it was going to be 47….
Da Parish suggested we go with 16….great idea!
WW II Sit Ups IC – 4 count x 16
    Flutter kicks IC x 16
Real Freddie Mercury IC x 16
    Hello Dolly IC x 16
    Box Cutters IC x 16
    Tin Snips IC x 16

Return to the VSF – exactly 47 minutes after we started. Coincidence? YHC thinks not….
Count off, name-o-rama, announcements, intentions, and final prayer.

Thanks for joining me this fine morning, and for allowing me to lead.

Ruckers ran 1.6 miles and power rucked 1.4 miles. The runners all did right around 4 miles. Great job to all the PAX at the 610 Stomp!

YHC has been preoccupied the last few weeks. However, YHC will once again keep an eye out for lacking backblasts…….I give the PAX my word!

  • Ruckin And Runnin

Beautiful moring in the gloom.  Low Humidity, Low 60s.  Best time of the year, in YHC’s humble opinion.  Enjoy now, the summer humidity will be here soon enough.  The Ruckers made an early morning appearance, followed by the Runners at the normal 530 start time.

The Ruckers: 3.5 miles along the usual bayou route covered in 1 hour.

The Runners: 5 miles along the usual bayou route covered in 45 minutes.  YHC cannot answer questions about what the Ruckers discussed during their stroll, but YHC can say he greatly enjoyed the company of, and conversation with, Tool.

All gathered again at the VSF for count off, name-o-rama, and ball of man for closing prayer.

As Tool and I ran past the 2 confederate monuments on our morning run, I could not help but reflect on the atmosphere of discord and animosity that seems to be permeating our interactions.  Too often, we begin to see the world as “us” and “them”, and  ascribe the worst of intentions to people with whom we disagree (“those guys are racists”.  “he’s just grandstanding”).  Jogging along Jefferson Davis and seeing the barricades intended to separate the two sides in the current dispute with a 10 foot gap between them (a Neutral Ground on the Neutral Ground) emphasized to YHC how awful we can become in our treatment of each other.  Whichever side of this issue, or any issue, you find yourself on – always remember that the person you are interacting with is a human being, made in the image of the same Creator as the one I believe made me.  How can that person be treated any less respectfully than I would treat my M, my 2.0, my parents, my friends.  How can I presume to understand the intentions of that person, or treat his words with less respect than I expect him to treat mine?  I must be prepared to disagree and hold firm on my convictions, while finding the patience to be respectful and the openness to hear.  And learn.  And retain respect for all others and treat with dignity, even when, ESPECIALLY when, I do not receive that dignity and respect in return.  And I must encourage that behavior in those around me.

Thanks again for the chance to be a brother of you all.

  • 610 Stomp #88

Shorty requested the prescribed GRT training today at the Stomp and YHC was happy to oblige.  The training for today involved sprints with some rest built in between.  We had 4 rucks among us so we modified some of the rest time.

    The Thang

Ruck to the track and warm-up with SSH IC x 30; Imperial Walkers IC x 30; Windmills IC x 15; Squats IC x 20; Flutter Kicks IC x 20; and 8-count Body Builders IC x 10

4 x 400m run with a 2 minute “rest” period between each 400.  When you finished the run you were to grab a ruck and do 15-25 reps of the given exercise.  Put the ruck down while the next man does his.  Keep alternating until the 2 minutes is up.  On average everyone did 2 sets of 20ish for each rest period.  Exercises were:

    • Rest 1 – Shoulder Presses
    • Rest 2 – Squats
    • Rest 3 – Shoulder Presses
    • Rest 4 – Squats

Next we ran 8 x 200m runs with a 1 minute rest between each 200.  This was a true rest with no exercises included.  When we finished we rucked back to the flag and sealed the deal with 15 burpees.

    Moleskin

So we ran 2 miles in 31 minutes and it sucked.  You can walk two miles faster than that, but running intervals for two miles is complete suck.  There is no way I would have completed that workout on my own.  We were all pushing each other and 4 different guys finished first at one time or another.  Running intervals hard is so much different than jogging at a steady pace.  Good lesson about running 10ks and half-marathon events – don’t start too fast.  It wears the body out quick.

  • 610 Stomp #87 – Lots of ground covered

The Q list had an empty slot this past Tuesday so when YHC jogged up to the flag, I was informed the tribe had spoken and I was to take the lead, probably because no one else wanted to get stuck with writing a backblast.  No sweat on my end, happy to lead the PAX.  It’s been a while since we had a good old fashion run at The Stomp so that was the plan, to run out along the bayou route and back in 45min.  Since mother nature treated us to a pleasantly cool morning, YHC thought it would be an ideal time for the PAX to strive for a distance record to surpass their previous Tues record.  Pick a spot where you planned on turning around then strive for that or even further, like we did several months back in the Salt-n-Peppa themed workout dubbed “Push It, Push It Real Good.”  After the disclaimer, we were off In a mosey.  We enjoyed some good F2 chat along the way, with the PAX gradually spreading out into a few clusters.  A few of us were grouped back together on the final stretch and finished strong down Roosevelt Mall.  No time for lagniappe burpees so we called it a morning. T-claps to Rudy and Shorty for possibly setting their Stomp distance record by going up and over the Jeff Davis overpass (approx 5.5+/-miles ).  YHC was just shy of hitting his mark.  COT included prayers for compromise and reasoning along with an end to the rhetoric, anger, and hatred surrounding the ongoing statue/monument issue here in New Orleans.

  • 610 Stomp – No Rucks Allowed

YHC strolled up in the gloom, seeing the usual gang of ne’er-do-wells. Overheard lots of mumbling about no rucksacks this morning. “Saw Rudy was Q, so I left rucksack at home.” Wise men, these guys. There would be no rucks today. Just the usual Rudy special: runs and sprints. Disclaimer, then the 5 PAX were off.

30 mins out-and-back on the Bayout St John route. YHC enjoyed the run with FracSac covering 3.5 miles, watching Shorty and Cowbell disappear ahead of us in the gloom. Morning humidity serves as fresh reminder of what’s looming in the summer months.

Sprint-a-thon at the track.  Rinse and repeat the following cycle for 5 laps (around 10 mins)

    • 100m sprint
    • 100m recovery mosey
    • 200m sprint
    • 100m recovery mosey

Thank you, Shorty, for pushing YHC to keep trying to get faster.

Return to VSF (where are the flags???? The PAX is nearly unanimous in pointing fingers at Hawg).  Finish with round of BB Situps OYO for 90 seconds.

Count-off, Name-o-rama.  Announcements, including call out of upcoming (June 7th) F3 sponsoring of NOTC Summer Series event.  More to come in early May.  Put on your calendar, though: week of GrowRuck.

Finish with a prayer.  YHC asks for wisdom for world leaders.  Conversation with 17 year old son, turning 18 this summer.  I hope and pray that the world offers peace and prosperity for him, and for all people.

  • 610 Stomp #85 – What the Ruck?

If you carry your cross joyfully, it will carry you.” – Thomas A Kempis

YHC dropped a ruck workout teaser late last night… so figuring we would have one or two show up this gloom (actually had three or four! Tclaps Kim Chi/Frac/Hawg), a partner ruck-share was required.  A Pax of eight + one K9 gathered in the gloom to win the first battle of the day against the dreaded enemy who calls himself, The Fartsack. So here we go…but first, DISCLAIMER….

    The Thang

Ruck/Mosey over to the track, and divide into two Pax of four Pax (Make sense??).

Pax #2 was able to get through 2 full rounds each before Pax #1 made it back.  Flapjack one time, then we all mosey/ruck to the Refinery.

Pax #1: Run out to Wisner and back (timer).
Pax #2: Four Stations of Position Holds until someone yells Halt.

Pax #2 was able to get through 2 full rounds each before Pax #1 made it back.  Flapjack one time, then hauled it back to the flag, where we held the COT- Countoff, Nameorama, Shoutouts, and Prayer.  Make America..or F3 Nation… Ruck Again!!

      • 2) Assemble your ruck with the required weight: 20lbs (4 bricks) for Pax weighing less than 150lbs, 30lbs (6 bricks) for everyone else….or if you’re Kim Chi, 60 lbs like his ruck was today #Tclaps.
  • 610 Stomp #84

With self-discipline, most anything is possible

A quote from Ryan Serhant, courtesy of Cowbell

I did not want to wake up this morning. I did not want to get out of bed. I did not want to work out. I wanted my comforter and I wanted to sleep in and I wanted to put socks on because my feet were cold. But then I remembered I didn’t wake up to be mediocre. I didn’t wake up to put a suit on and pay bills and die. I woke up to take advantage of another day on earth. Another day I have the CHOICE to do whatever I want to do to make myself happy. Another day to dominate. Another day to be thankful. Another day to control my own destiny. Someone once told me that most people are already dead by the time they hit my age – we just don’t bury them until they’re 80 or 90. Well I’m not ready to die yet. So screw this comforter and these warm socks and LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

There were two flags at the AO when YHC arrived in the gloom, and this just reinforced YHC that signing up to Q was the right move.  There were three men, then four, then seven.  It was 0529 and two more vehicles rapidly approached.  The final two men arrived just as the time hit 0530.  Nine men woke up early and made a choice to take advantage of another day, and to become better.  Mediocrity is not acceptable among these men.  Let the beat down begin…..

    But first, The Disclaimer….and then

    The Thang

YHC thought it would be good to incorporate the April challenge into the 610 Stomp, so before we ran, all were instructed to get on their sixes and prepare for WW2 sit ups.
IC x 15 WW2 (Big Boy) Sit ups – these are the two per four count. Although there are 30 in a 15 count, they only count as 15. Remember, we are here to improve.
    15 merkins OYO

We ran the regular bayou route, with the following instructions:
10 x WW2 situps and 10 merkins at the following locations:
NOMA, Cabrini Bridge, Dumaine St Bridge, and the Cuban guy statue (Jose Marti). Then turn around and run back.
Stop for 55 dips at the NOMA Fountain.
We sealed the deal with 15 burpies back at the flag.

The PAX ended with approximately 4.15 miles, 55 WW2 Situps, 55 Merkins, 55 Dips and 15 Burpees.  Although the dips were an appropriate substitute for the pull ups from the April challenge, Cowbell made it crystal clear that 55 pull ups were still expected of the PAX OYO.  No argument here…..

We ended the beat down with the COT for the count off, namorama, announcements, intentions, and a final prayer.  We will not be mediocre this day.

    Thanks for letting me lead!

  • 610 Stomp #83 – Classic with GRT Flavor

    Discipline Equals Freedom

A quote from F3 Apache of Rock Hill:

The alarm clock goes off.  It’s time to get out of bed.  This is your first decision of the day.  Will you get out of bed or hit the snooze button?

You press the snooze button and roll over.  What just happened?  No big deal, right?  Wrong.  You just lost the first battle of the day.  The Sadclown kicked your butt and has broken your will before you’ve even gotten out of bed.  You will most likely be its slave for the rest of the day.

Are we going to beat that sad clown of the gloom? the choice is yours and it’s you against you.  Please don’t freaking lose.

    The Thang

We started with eight 8-count body builders in cadence.  We then ran the classic bayou route stopping for eight 8-count body builders at the following spots:  NOMA, Cabrini Bridge, Dumaine St. Bridge, Orleans Bridge, Jose Marti Statue, Orleans Bridge, Dumaine St. Bridge, Cabrini Bridge, Esplanade Bridge, NOMA.  Then we sealed the deal with 12 burpees.  That’s a total of 80 body builders, 12 burpees, and 4 miles.

    Moleskin

Six men and a K9 won the first battle of the day this morning.  By being disciplined we are free to be the men we are called to be.  Without discipline we become severely limited in what we are capable of doing.  T-claps to Tool,  who had an early appointment this morning.  He finished his run as we were starting the Stomp – that takes discipline.  That’s a man setting an example for the rest of us to follow.

  • 610 Stomp #82 – Chaos

YHC was the first to arrive in the gloom, standing at the VSF on this warm and humid morning. Before long, other men from F3 began to arrive, but it seemed a bit unsettled. Rudy started counting, but just couldn’t seem to come up with the number he sought. YHC began to think Rudy was losing it, but then YHC’s attention was taken elsewhere. Who was that hiding behind a vehicle? The shadow of a human literally shot out from behind the truck and darted toward the Shovel Flag, seemingly hoping the shadow of the temporary monument would keep him hidden from that which he was attempting to avoid. Is that JV? Have the double nickle symptoms set in early? YHC hears a whisper from the shadow that appears to be JV, and it went like this…”he shot my brother, and I think he’s after me!” No, he will not get you here in the gloom. You are safe here, my friend! Then from out of nowhere came Heisenberg, wearing a TM headband, high fiving and fist bumping all in the gloom. All seemed to be well, until YHC looked over and saw terror in the eyes of Cowbell and Kim Chi as they witnessed Rudy feverishly counting, unable to attain the sum he sought! YHC looked at his iphone, and was thankful the device read 0530. After a brief disclaimer, YHC attempted to bring order to the gloom, but chaos was reigning strong. “Run, just run”, YHC proclaimed to the PAX, “and be back at the track at 0605 for some sprints!” With that, the PAX dispersed, and YHC was uncertain where they ran or if they would return.

    The Thang

With a new pair of shoes, as the old ones were destroyed on the TM course, YHC glided on the street, taking the usual route. Upon arrival on the Lafitte Greenway, YHC ran until the time was such that it reflected the halfway mark.  Upon turning around, there was no Pax, bringing a certain unease to the mind of YHC.  Have the men of F3 gone mad?  But upon further investigation, while traveling back to the track, YHC came upon JV, who seemed to have overcome his symptoms of paranoia.  Then YHC saw Kim Chi and Heisenberg, and YHC felt all would be well.  But wait, where is Rudy and Cowbell?  Upon arrival at the track at 0604, those of us that made it decided to do a few LBC’s.  Suddenly, and out of nowhere, came Cowbell and Rudy.  We finished the LBC IC x 20, and it was time for sprints.

YHC explained that the Pax would do sprints on the straightaways and mosey on the curves, twice around the track.  YHC looked to Rudy to see if his confusion lingered.  Rudy was again counting, but was satisfied with the new count, as Tool and Udder had joined us.  YHC almost didn’t recognize Tool without the beacon of hope that had reigned on Saturday.   The Pax completed the 2 laps in high spirits and in great time.  That left time for…

    Freddie Mercury’s IC x 20
Partner up, Leg throws x 15 each, followed by big boy situps x 10 each

It was great to have Udder from North Carolina join us.  Kim Chi’s streak continues, and JV is a rock!

  • 610 Stomp ‘n Sprint

On a brisk gloomy Pi-Day morning, 4 PAX and 1 PUP gathered around the flag.  After a brief moment of pondering, YHC settled on the Stomp ‘n’ Sprint.  30 Min stomp, meet back at the track for sprints.  Go.

Stomp: YHC enjoyed a good brisk run with KimChi, reviewing the upcoming Tough Mudder.  Much discussion on appropriate footwear…. Returning to the track, we stumble upon Babyface and Tool, both of whom had apparently missed our step off by a few minutes.  Better late than never!

Sprints: LBCs at the track while we wait for the 6.  OYO: Sprint the straight-away, slowsey around the curve.  Repeat.  And keep repeating till we run out of time.  I think all PAX got at least 4 laps (8 sprints).  LBCs wait for the 6.  Then back to the flag.

Countoff, Name-o-rama, Announcements.  Much chatting about logistics for Tough Mudder – in particular, where we will keep the ice chest of beer (I volunteered the back of Heisenburg’s car).

Close with a prayer for blessings to use the gift of today in service of God, our families, our co-workers.  Finish with St. Ignatius’ Prayer for Generosity.
