  • Simple But Effective – from Rudy

    So said the long-lost Hawg in a return to the Gloom. HIGH PRAISE from him, the man who taught me that its ok to spend 45 minutes standing in one place with a rock. This morning 8 PAX followed along while we spent approximately 40 minutes standing (or sitting) in one place.

    The Thang
    3 Rounds of 10 exercises – 45 seconds AMRAP, 15 second rest/transition. All done with Rocks
    * Squats
    * Shoulder Press
    * Curls
    * Rows
    * Big Boy Situps
    * Flutter Kicks
    * Bench Press
    * Wife Pleasers
    * Lunge (no rock – ensure we get the knee to the ground)
    * Thrusters

    In between rounds, we did a quick Indian Run for recovery. Almost ran a few runners off the path.

    COT: YHC offered a very personal thought and observation, greeted with the childish snickers of a bunch of 6th grade level PAX with the brain power of Beavis and Butthead. But seriously – YHC loves these PAX and greatly appreciates the support they always provide, including offering heartfelt support while also always reminding each of us that its ok to laugh with ourselves and at ourselves.

    Playlist had a mix of eras (70s through current), but Spotify seemed to lean heavily into the 70s/80s rock part of it.

    I knew the challenge when I hit send….Mr. Rogers has set the expectation for a “Hero” beatdown so I decided to go with one living. Sgt Dakota Meyer – Medal of Honor Recipient Afghanistan. • 7 Strong @ The Mothership – from King Kong

    It’s been awhile since I made it back to the Mothership. Glad Catfish reached out and signed me up to Q. I had no excuse but to grab my passport and crossed that Parish line to a very far, far place called City Park.

    It was a humid, hot Saturday morning. By 6:30 a.m., I can see the glares coming off Gabby’s shiny head as he was waiting for us at the Canal Street PJ’s. Tclaps to couple pax who brought their weighted vests to the beatdown.

    We warmed up by the Peristyle with stretches, arm circles, Imperial Walkers, Hill Billies, SSHs, open gates, slow low squats, high knees, karaoke, and side hops. After our bodies were loosen up, we slowly Indian ran to NOMA.

    By the steps in front of NOMA, we did inclined merkins up each step all the way to the top. We did 20 Rocky Balboa’s in cadence and 15 right / left leg power ups by the fountain.
    I was looking for shade the entire workout. Instead of moving to the baseball field, we stayed in front of the fountain and did DORA 1, 2, 3 with 100 merkins, 200 SSHs, and 300 flutter kicks (one is one on the count). While one partner was doing those exercises, the other pax ran to a designated vehicle and back.

    After DORA, we Indian ran to the Baby Foundry. We did 5 pull ups, 10 alternate forward lunges, another 5 pull ups, 10 slow low squats, final 5 pull ups, and 10 alternate backward lunges. We left the Baby Foundry and headed to the Great Lawn.

    By the time we arrived to the Great Lawn, about 1/4 of the field had shade. And I know the Pax thanked me for hiding in that corner for the last set of exercises before meeting up with Mary. First, we bear crawled half of the field and back. Second, we duck walked half of the field and back. We finally finished off with burpee broad jumps half of the field.

    We headed back to where we started at the Peristyle with flutterkicks and Hello Dolly’s. We left Mary behind and finished the morning with stretches. Moseyed back to the flag with announcements and intentions.

    The Pax went to coffeeteria for some F2 fellowship. I am forever grateful knowing the Pax will always be there for me.

    PAX Partnered up. One ran around the gym while the other held a pose. Repeat 5 times.
    Round 1 – Wall squats

    Have a great Friday and Safe Weekend.

  • Workout dedicated to Army Sgt Bryan Cooper Mount – from Pool Boy

    It was a great way to start the day with 2 FNG’s showing up. Reminder to all, the importance of introducing new men to our group.

    Quick warmups of Grass Grabbers, Abe Vigoda’s and Arm Circles.
    Thang:
    In keeping up with Mr. Rogers theme, we did a half Murph dedicated to Army Sergeant Bryan Cooper Mount. He was killed July 21, 2020 in Eastern Syria. He was a husband, son, brother, and leader who was adored by everyone who knew him.

    In no particular order and done individually:
    4 laps around track=1 mile
    50 pullups
    100 merkins
    150 squats
    Finish with 4 laps or whatever you have left in you.

    Mary back at the flag.
    Credit to Vagabond for the new FNG names. Welcome Crackspread and Little Mermaid.

  • A wee bit of ND – from Rudy

    Been a while since YHC had provided a history lesson on ND, and Rock City is now filled with PAX that haven’t been blessed with this knowledge yet. So its time to fill them in. Brief disclaimer and we’re off to the rocks with a few straggling PAX rolling in hot post-train.

    Temp: Too Hot, Too Humid.
    Conditions: Ground surprisingly dry after a weekend of rain

    Quick warmup of an assortment of stretch-y and low-impact stuff. Then grab a rock and head to the field. I said “surprisingly dry” earlier, but the mosey to the field did manage to find the quagmire.

    Thing 1: ND History Ladder
    5 Burpees: for Blessed Basil Moreau, founder of the Order of the Holy Cross
    Add 10 Squats: for Fr. Edward Sorin, founder of the University
    Add 15 Merkins: for Fr. Andrew Morrissey, build the Grotto
    Add 20 Curls: for Fr. William Corby, Chaplain of the Irish Brigade during the Civil War
    Add 25 Imperial Walkers: for Fr. Thomas Walsh, oversaw rebuilding of ND post Fire
    Add 30 Rows: for brand new president Fr. Robert Dowd, 2 weeks on the job
    Add 35 Hello Dolly: for long standing president Fr. Ted Hesburgh

    In between, rifle carry back and forth across the field.

    Mixed in some ND trivia whereby Wedding Planner, Hand Grenada, Mahatma and Frac all managed to lose and earn 5 Blockees for the PAX. Pool Boy correctly guessed Navy, saving everyone from 5 more.

    Thing 2: Route 88s
    Like Route 66s, but better. Plus it evokes memories of ’88, the last ND championship year. Start with 3 Thrusters at Tree 1. Add 1 at each Tree. Halfway through, in the interest of time YHC had to modify as he was never going to get all 88 Thrusters. Mr. Rodgers, though, did. With a 30 pound weight vest too.

    Return the rocks and get back to the circle in the nick of time.

    Finish with COT: count-off (15 PAX!) and Name-o-rama. Ranging in ages from 20 (Good to see you Pinewood) through 60 (Kotter for the Mutt!)

    Thanks for putting up with me!
