  • Float like a butterfly, sting like a…

The Killer B’s ended with a bang Saturday morning, with Grundy taking the Northshore lead by mere seconds.  Sure, we could debate the fairness of doing it on the lakefront’s luxurious grass vs. the Marsh’s unyielding concrete, or the legality of the proctor himself taking home first place, but when it comes down to it, we must (begrudgingly) give Grundy due credit (and hate!) – it was a pretty inspirational effort.  In fact, Tank was nipping at his heels the entire time and it seems the two were feeding off one another’s energy to push each other to their record times.

So t-claps to those two men for giving it their all and, while we’re t-clapping, we might as well toss another one out to Zoo and his miraculous self-healing leg, for taking the opportunity to hit the challenge for a second time and improve upon his score.  Alright, the rundown:

Usual pre-thang 2 miler featured guest appearances by both Bushwacker and Garfield, and then we went right into the warmorama: Arm circles (forward/back), IW’s, copperhead squats, toe touches, hillbillies, SSHs, mountain climbers, all x20 IC.

Thang:  Half the PAX followed Grundy to complete the IP challenge, while those that had already had their fill followed YHC.

First stop on our tour of the lakefront was an old favorite that can be difficult to use with a large pax: Rips.  Instead of the traditional stair run/Rocky Balboa’s, though, we simply grabbed a handrail and did one legged negative calf raises, at a slow cadence: x15 per leg.

Then, eastward towards the baseball field, stopping for a quick COP of high knees and a burpee wave.  About 6 rounds, and then onward…

To the pull-up bars behind the baseball field.  Circled up on our six for flutter kicks, while 2 men got up to do 5x pull-ups.  Around the circle again and again and again, until each man had 25 pull-ups.  We maxed out on flutters and at some point switched to Freddie Mercs, which did not really help all that much.

Next up, flip over to a plank for plank jacks, while 2 men got up to do hanging knee tucks x10.  Round the circle a few times, switching about halfway to shoulder taps, until each man had 30 tucks.

Mosey back towards the boat launch to split into two teams for a 100-yard sprint relay race.  Losing team gets hit with 25 burpees, winning team gets 25 merkins.  (YHC has learned that, in the realm of F3, the winning team never takes the easy way and sits out on the work so why even bother pretending there’s a reward.)  With Bean pulling double duty for Team 2 to secure the win, they performed their merkins and then jumped in to help Team 1 finish up with their burpees.  And then everyone took a page from Pik, who’s been keeping Old Mandeville clean for the better part of two years, and did a quick sweep of beer bottles before heading over to the playground for a quick partner routine.

P1 holds people’s chair while doing air presses, P2 bear crawls up the small hill to the swingset pad for 10 merkins and then bunny hops back down to flapjack with P1.

Just enough time to Indian Run back to Rips, get in one more set of calf raises (x10 each leg this time), and back at the flag for a round of boxcutters, x20 IC.  The rest of the gang joined us at this point, looking thoroughly destroyed, and we circled up for COT.  Zoo encouraged all to share the gift of F3 and bring out some new brothers, and Maverick took us out with a prayer, encouraging us to be men of strength. Then off to coffeeteria.  Thank you men for the opportunity not only to lead, but to get stronger and sharper alongside you.

  • Running Games? I Thought You Said Fun ‘n’ Games!

The mumble chatter started the previous night at the successful meet n greet campaign party for our very own Hammer about the fact that if Turbo had the Q for Saturday, then it was either fun n games or, more likely, plenty of running, much to the consternation of more than one PAX both present and away. While, in a sense, fun n games were in fact afoot, today was a run day!

    WARMORAMA

    x20 IC:

    Seal Jacks

    Imperial Walkers

    Toe Touches

    THANG

Mosied westward down the lakefront for a stretch before we stopped for some merkins. Continued up Marigny and stopped for some Mountain Climbers. Finished up at the Marsh where we partnered up for a little competiton.

4 4 minute rounds with a running total per team:

Round 1- P1 SSH while P2 runs to opposite side of the court and performs 2 Burpees

    Round 2- P1Butt Kicks, P2 2 180 degree hops

Round 3- P1 Lateral Hops, P2 2 Tuck (Squat) Jumps

Round 4- P1 imaginary Jump Rope, P2 2 Bobby Hurleys

In between each round was 30 seconds rest, 1 minute of Plank, and 30 more seconds of rest. Teams that scored under 82 total points (all?) dropped for 10 penalty burpees.

Next, the Pax split evenly and competed head-to-head in a relay race from one end of the court to the other. The Odd numbered team performed another set of 10 penalty burpees. YHC must note that never has he seen such an intense show of drive and performance from every man at the same time as was displyed during this race!

Same teams did a double-line Indian Run back to the Lakefront, where the PAX planked for the 6, followed by a slow mosy before an all out sprint to the flag.

    COUNTORAMA

    NAMEORAMA

Naming of FNG Black Cat. Welcome brother, better late than never!

    Phoenix prayed us out.

T Claps to Turbo Tax for a well put together, high intensity beat down. It’s always a privilege to follow a great leader. Who says running can’t be fun!

  • SHOULDERING the RUNNING Responsibilties of F3 Membership

Foregoing the 2 mile pre-thang this gloom, YHC arrived in time to plant the Marsh flag next to the Scramble flag at the blustery AO and greet the menagerie of men gathered for a proper Saturday beat down

    WARM O RAMA

With a focus on the shoulder demands of what QIC had in store…

    All x25 IC:

    Seal Claps

    Overhead Claps

    Air Presses

    Cherry Pickers

    Torso Twists

    Imperial Walkers

    Windmills

    High Knees

    THANG

    Mosied to Grundy’s Noah’s Ark for…

Burpee Mile – 4 laps, each followed by 12 burpees

Mosied to between Lamarque and Foy for…

T Bombs x25 IC – Starting in crab position, 1 legs straight out, 2 feet wide, 3 feet back together, 4 legs back in

Mosied to the splash pad area for…

Blackjack – 1 merkin, run a little ways, 20 LBCs. 2 merkins, 19 LBCs, etc. until 20 merkins, 1 LBC

Q had SO much more fun in store for the PAX, however with time running short, a 2 line indian run back to the flags capped off the somewhat HIIT-like beat down that kept heart rates elevated. By Q’s count, the ISI total was 378 . Also, 3.5 miles (5.5 for the pre-thangers).

    COT

Count o rama (17 present), name o rama, and Suckles, who was back from Georgia for a quick visit, prayed us out.

Guys, a valorous and highly impressive effort was put forth by each and every one of you. I am humbly appreciative of your willingness to show up and follow my wackie lead.

Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads, and to those without kids, a happy Father’s Day to your own dear old man!

  • The Bear Necessities (Song)

    Look for the bear necessities
    The simple bear necessities
Forget about your whining and your strife
    I mean the bear necessities
    Old Grundy’s evil recipes
That brings the bear necessities to life

Wherever I wander, wherever I roam
    I couldn’t be fonder, of my F3 bro’s
The PAX as fussy as can be
And to think it’s all because of me
When they looked into the groupme chats
And took a glance at the glove demands
Then said, maybe I’ll fartsack this too…

The bear necessities of life will come find you
They’ll come find you! (Looking at you EIEI)

    Look for the bear necessities
    The “simple” bear necessities
500 yards of bear crawls will suffice
    I mean the bear necessities
Then after we can rest at ease
With just the bear necessities of life. (Coffee and F2)
With just those bear necessities of life!!!

Hope you enjoyed the song! I’ll be releasing an album of all of my F3 hits coming this Fall.

YHC thought that all of us needed a good reminder of just how hard a Saturday F3 beatdown could be. Those 15 extra minutes can be absolutely brutal. We always need that reminder.

With that in mind, this beatdown was going to bring a pain that will never be forgotten.

    #NeverForget

    Warmup

    SSH 20 IC
    Seal Jacks 20 IC
    Shoulder Series
    Carolina Dry Docks 10 IC

Mosey to the open field for the main event.

    THE THANG

    FIVE ROUNDS:
    20x SQUAT JUMPS
    50 YARD BEAR CRAWL

Before we moved onto the next set of crawls we hit core with some Reverse Manny Crunches and LBCs.

    FOUR ROUNDS:
20x SPLIT JUMP each side (sister mary catherines)
    40 YARD BEAR CRAWL

    THREE ROUNDS:
    20x BURPEE
    30 YARD BEAR CRAWL

We formed two lines and staggered back indian run style to the flag. After we got back, an excellent display of what F3 is all about occurred with many men going back to leave no F3 man behind.

We circled up and counted off and Butt Splice prayed us out.

I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this group of the highest quality men and to be pushed beyond what I believe is possible. It’s an absolute honor to be able to lead you men any opportunity I get.

Until next time (after I’ve recovered from this one…)

  • Memorial Day Murph at the Marsh

Fourteen men posted this morning to pay their respects to Lt. Michael Murphy and the millions of others who have sacrificed everything for our country.    To honor that sacrifice, we did The Murph.

YHC gave a quick recap of Lt. Michael Murphy’s story – he was part of a four-man Navy Seal team that was overwhelmed by Taliban forces in Asadabad, Afghanistan.  All four men had already been wounded and, unable to radio for help from their sheltered mountainside position, it was Lt. Murphy who opened himself to more gunfire in order to successfully make the call.  In fact, after being shot in the back and dropping the radio, he picked it back up and finished the call before returning to the fight. He saved one man’s life that day.

The crazy thing is just how many similar stories there are.  There’s PFC Ross McGinnis, 19, who deliberately threw himself onto a grenade in Iraq to save all four people in his vehicle.  Or Sergeant Henry Johnson, part of the Harlem Hellfighters, who suffered 21 wounds while rescuing a soldier and repelling a German raid in WWI. Or 1st Lt Jack Lummus who continued to give orders at Iwo Jima after losing both legs to a landmine.  The list goes on and on.  And today, we should take a minute while we are at our family BBQ’s or poolside and reconnect with that history and remember the legacy of these heroes.

With that in mind, we began the simple benchmark workout:

    • 1 mile run
    • 100 pull-ups
    • 200 merkins
    • 300 squats
    • 1 mile run

The PAX broke up the middle section into 20 rounds of 5 pull-ups / 10 merkins / 15 squats, then hit the final run hard, finishing right around 50 minutes.  COT and Grundy prayed us out.

It was an impressive sight to see so many men post to the Milestone Marsh at 0500 on their Monday off.  For me, the legacy of our fallen heroes is folded into the DNA of F3.  I see the qualities of leadership and selflessness spreading across F3 nation as if they’re contagious.   And it’s not simply as a group, but the individual men of F3 all seem to embody that spirit personally.  And isn’t that the best way to remember our heroes, to try and embody their greatest qualities?  Thank you men for the remarkable effort, and enjoy your Memorial Day!

  • ZOORICH CLASSIC

After a quick disclaimer and Warmorama (18 x SSH, 18 x Toe Touches, 9 Windmills), the Pax moseyed westward and partnered up to commence a frisbee golf challenge. We had 18 holes i.e. crawfish trays (‘tis the season!) with a total course length of ~1 mile. For each hole, one partner threw the high quality, PDGA-approved disc (courtesy of Dollar General), while the other partner performed the following exercises between strokes for the respective holes. Partners alternated throwing and exercising throughout the course.

    Between Strokes

    Holes 1 – 3: Bear Crawl

    Holes 4 – 6: Wheelbarrow

    Holes 7 – 9: Lunge Walk

    Holes 10 – 12: Groucho Walk

    Holes 13 – 15: Frankensteins

    Holes 16 – 18: Burpee Broad Jumps

Once the team completed a hole, both team members performed the following exercises with the rep count equal to how many strokes the team took to complete the hole.

    Hole          Exercise

    1                # x Freak Nasties

    2                # x Jump Squats

    3                # x Derkins

    8               # x Burpees

    9               # x Donkey Kicks

    10            # x Plank Jacks

    11            # x Sister Mary Katherines

    16          #  x Dive Bombers

17         # x Box Jumps (No one completed as time ran out)

18         # x Patty Cake Merkins (No one completed as time ran out)

Team BEAN HAMMER started out rough with the first throw on the first hole in the Lake, but quickly recovered.

Team STEVE GRUNDY put on a racy display of Squerkins, which are very likely to never be incorporated into another F3 Northshore beatdown.

Welcome back two Pax back from Injured Reserve, Butt Splice and Tanked Up!, who inadvertently won unattributable points for best team name: BUTT TANK!

Thanks to team JOSE RUSSO for scooping up the coupons at the end.

Team scores were recorded on scorecards provided by the Q and tallied below with penalty 6s for unfinished holes. This simplified scoring normalization yielded team Shooting Sparks as winner of the 2019 Zoorich Classic. Congrats guys. Wear this badge of honor proudly!

Counterama, Name-orama, ceremonial naming of FNG – Speedy Gonzales, and Butt Splice prayed us out. 19th hole coffeeteria at our usual spot. Thanks for allowing me to lead, Men. Hope you enjoyed it as much as YHC had dreaming it up. SYITNG!

  • HardCORE in the Foggy Dew

RunRangerRun is 50% complete, and according to northshore team 1 captain, Steve, we are in 7th place for runners nation-wide! The maverick machine, Amnesia, has taken sole ownership of team 2, and chugging along! With all of that in mind, YHC pulled in this gloom just in time to jump into the 2 mile pre-thang along with the other pre-thangers, as well as the pre-pre-thangers. With Butt Splice in the mix, there would indeed be a competitive pace man to chase.

The rest of the Saturday warriors were eagerly assembled in the hazy morning around the flag in anticipation of the beatdown in store for them. With the House of Steve under quarantine, Captain Core stepped in to cover Q.

  • NOLA No Call Beatdown – Northshore Edition

It was great seeing the South Shore on the North Shore. I am sure they were happy it was not at 7pm, in tank tops, and 30 degrees!!!! Thanks for making the trip across the bridge to take part of our beatdown. Let’s get this thing going!

Warmarama: Toe Touches – 15 IC, Windmills – 15 IC, IWs- 15 IC, SS Hops- 15 IC, Seal Jacks 15 – IC, High Knees 15 – IC, Butt Kicks 15 – IC, Eight Count Body Builders 10 – IC

    Mosey….

11’s : Start at the seawall by doing 1 step with each leg. Bear crawl to the street, and do 10 plank jacks. Lunge walk back to the sea wall. Rinse and repeat, increasing the step ups until you get to 10 and decreasing the plank jacks until you get to 1.

    Mosey….

With it being the eve of Superbowl 51, where our beloved Saints received the shaft, I thought it would be fitting to incorporate a part of our beatdown dedicated to the Black and Gold. All pacs were asked trivia questions regarding The Saints. An exercise was performed that was coinciding with the answers. The knowledge of the pacs regarding out team was quite impressive.

    1. How long was Garret Bartley’s field goal that sent the Saints to the super bowl in 2009? Answer: 40 yards, Exercise: 40 Jump Squats OYO
    2. In what year did the Saints play their first season in the Super Dome? Answer: 1975, Exercise: 75 Air Presses OYO
    3. What is the most touchdowns that a Saints player has scored in a season? Answer: 18, The original exercise was 18 burpees. Due to The Channel Mullet knowing that the Saints player who scored these 18 touchdowns was Dalton Hillard, we only had to do 17 burpees, IC. Thank You Channel Mullet!!!!
    4. What team did the Saints give their first victory after starting 0 and 26? Answer: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Exercise: 26 Merkins
    5. On what date did the Saints beat the Rams for their first playoff win? Answer: Dec 30, 2000, Exercise: 30 American Hammers IC

Merkin Wave – with a twist

All pacs take the plank position, starting with THE Manny, do one Merkin. Going in a clockwise direction, each pac does one Merkin while all other pacs hold plank position. Rinse and repeat this 4 times. In between each wave, all pacs move a 1/4 turn to the right in a plank position. This is Butt Splice’s absolutely favorite exercise on the F3 website.

With @the-manny being out of comission for the moment he had to call is a substitute Q.. and who better than @butt-splice himself!!! 16 men including myself decided not to fartsack and overcome the sad clown syndrome! 6 got the worm with 2 miles of foreplay and @josemourinho showed us all what a 10k foreplay looks like. With excitement we return back to the flag with smiling faces awating us and an almost unrecognizable @eiei (because of the beard not the belly!) Glad to have you back brother!
