  • Boisterous Rock City – from Fracsac

The Double Nickel week continued with 8 other Pax joining YHC.

Disclaimer given then off to meet Hand Grenada while Tenderloin hit the track. Once HG was finished pounding his morning Joe, the pax circled up for the warmup. Nothing to note except the squat twist, which brought much joy to Bogey. Mr Rogers did not like the squat twist, not sure if it was the name or the evolution. Either way, he protested during the SSHs.

Continue to the Rock Pile. YHC informed the pax that rock burpees would be afoot, so choose wisely. Rudy gave YHC the proverbial middle finger and chose the biggest rock he could find. Kilo heard him mutter something like “he lies.” Kilo responded with “I do too know how to land a plane!” And with that he grabbed an even bigger rock!

HG got tired of waiting and said he was headed for the hill. Fast Tax said “not so fast” and pointed out a railroad tie and said we should do 5 x rock burpees.

On we went stopping at a random tree Bogey seemed to connect with. He demanded 5 more rock burpees.

We continued to the hill for 11s. Rock burpees and OH press. YHC was going to do an ab exercise but HG demanded we lug the rocks. Vagabond yelled out “Do em right y’all”.

On to the playground for one last thing. Stations with 5 x pull-ups and everything else AMRAP. Two rounds.

Back to the rockpile and mosey to the flag

Thank you all for the brotherhood!

  • Park Squatters – from Hand Grenada

PSA: Hand Grenada doesn’t believe in backblasts. We believe it is because he doesn’t know how to type, or even read. Therefore, Mayhem is writing this BB for him. Although HG knows this favor is taking place, details were not discussed. Also, HG is not on Slack since he doesn’t want the government to know what is happening on his phone. So… first, feel free to leave thoughtful comments about him on Slack as he will never see them… second, if you need him, hit him up on SnapChat, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X or Truth Social since the government doesn’t watch those.

(Written as if HG was typing it himself)

Pounded my first coffee and took a stroll across the tracks

Conditions: 64 degrees, 64% humidity, nearly windless

Great to see 76-year old Tenderloin back at at Pontiff after a 1+/- year hiatus
We started with a total of 8 PAX

Disclaimer: this is peer led and there are peer reviews

“Wow, Mayhem, you look really good considering you just completed a pre-beatdown 5 mile jog. Good work, son.”

Mosey 0.16 mi the wrong way around the track to the intersection of the track and the street. Warmarama in the middle of the street, because I said so.

We did somethings: bend at the waist, self-love, bend at the waist, PP, IW, PP, SQUAT twist

Mosey 0.16 mi to the first pavilion. Some (Vagabond and Mr Rodgers took the short… um… scenic route). Others followed the Q’s instructions. Particularly Mayhem, what an example he was this morning to the rest of the PAX.

Two rounds, 4 stations at 4 tables.
Incline merkins, Dips, Derkins, leg lifts.

Mosey 0.4 mi to the hill. PAX moved at varying paces. “Dang, Mayhem, I said mosey not sprint. You really are impressing me today, son.” The Architect found us on the way.

7s… start with 6 merkins, backwards lunge up the hill, 3 SQUATS atop the hill, forward lunge down the other side of the hill, 1 SQUAT twist and so forth. Although YHC was the first to finish, I cheated. To punish myself, I was in a wall sit position waiting on the rest of the PAX, and admiring Mayhem’s form.

Mosey 0.22 mi to the rock pile. YHC only wanted to say the word “rock” once today since this is Rock City. We never intended on using the rocks. Once we all caught up with Mayhem, we got on our 6 for a few minutes of Mary.

Mosey 0.13 mi back to the flag. And there goes Mayhem…

Announcements – great to have Tenderloin back out
Intentions – cancer sucks & take care of our aging parents
    Prayed us out
Then Mayhem jogged off into the distance.

Just one last comment about Mayhem. Great work, son. You are a real testament of what F3 can do for a man. You not only pushed yourself but you pushed all of us. Thank You.

(Just a reminder… written by Mayhem but through the assumed eyes of HG)

  • Not meant to be a joke….the plan “easy” it was the partnered effort that made it challenging – from Mahatma

April 1 2024 70deg and it’s Rock City. YHC had his black box, playlist ready and a game plan….. Disclaimer given we headed to the field. Tenderloin hit the track to his standard routine so that gave us 9 no what a minute a late undecided 10th arrival; is he a Rucker, Knoter or interested in joining the pack? No amount of camaraderie coaxing could draw the 10th so off he drifted to wonder with out any real plan yet in his mind showing up was 1/2 the battle and a sure win.

During the warm up the 8 were instructed to choose a partner, who was choosing who? Bogey Elgapo Rudy Architect vagabond PoolBoy

Well it worked out and YHC ended up with some 49er from the hills of AR.

Instructions: start with Red Barchetta (for those that know: know 100 SSH, 75 BBS, 50 Squats (Looking at Hawg either I shorted 10 or his youthfulness was just showing off) 25 Hand slap merkins, 10 Burpees
Then straight to the bleachers for the stair snake upon completion run to the start 10 Burpees
Then hit the field for a partner bear crawl push swapping 1/2 way.
Once done head to the goal line where Hawg lead Mary until the 6 showed up.

With that complete we met at some random spot on the track where we were going to run partnered 200s – Rudy was showing his smarts and pointed out to the Q that we had to move to the middle of the track to keep it fair.

With a total mile complete we did a little
Mary: 3 rounds of something then off to the pull up bars for 3 rounds of 3 with 5 Merkins between each round.

Then line up at the track Bernie Sanders back to the start – several of the Yutes took off to push the pack.

Finished with another round of Mary and a few April Fools promises of it being the last round.

COT – with a little bit of passionate prayer for male leadership.

  • Do Hard Things or KnOT – from Hawgcycle

I stole the title from Mayhem. It’s too good not to use.

The overarching lesson of the book Do Hard Things is that toughness is not created by mercilessly driving someone past their limitations. That’s the old-school way of thinking about toughness. Think Bear Bryant’s Junction Boys or any Indiana Hoosier Basketball team under Bobby Knight. But science shows that people must be given some level of control over their situation to develop true toughness. The theory being that if everything you ever do is for a dictator, then when faced with a tough situation, you will likely give up in the absence of the dictator.

Tuesdays at Pontiff are not the typical F3 workout. Pai Gow takes the Q for almost all of them and he prescribes the sprint workout for the day. The pax has no control over designing the workout. That is always done by Pai Gow. However, he is far from a dictator. He gives instruction and goals for completing the workout, but leaves the rest up to the Pax as to how they want to complete the workout.

Today PVC, Two Yutes and I were faced with a Pai Gow – less workout. We started with a slow one mile jog. At the end of our warm-up we had a decision to make. Do we continue to take it easy and slow jog the rest of the workout or do we borrow one of the sprint workouts that Pai Gow has given us in the past and push ourselves? Suddenly the most recent chapter of Do Hard Things started to make sense. The temptation to slow jog the rest of the workout was there, and had we been beaten down souls every Tuesday, we might have taken the opportunity to take a Tuesday off. But we are not beaten down souls. Our pre-fontal cortexes are fully engaged and they encouraged us to do the hard thing:

    The Thang:

One Mile warm-up. Sprint a 100, 200, 300 and 400 with a 100m recovery between each. Finish with a 400m recovery lap. Then repeat the entire set. We did 3 sets and covered about 4.5 miles.

Meanwhile Tenderloin did his own thing on the track, while Scantron dictated the KnOT workout to Rougarou. Does Rougarou have any control? Is he building toughness or just hatred for Scantron? Only Roug knows.

    Things we learned:

    • Mosquitos eat bitcoin
    • More NHL players are born in January than any other month.
    • Dentists open at 7:00 am

  • 9 to the Left is 2 to the Right – from Hawgcycle

    Warm-Up:
    Moseyed to the t-ball field by the tracks. SSH x 20; IW x 20; LSS x 20; Tempo Merkins x 15; Windmills x 10; Jack Web to 10 (2:1 Air Press:Merkin)
    The Thang:
We ran back to the rock pile to pick a rock and then returned to the t-ball field. We circled up and did a Rock Stack. We paused between each set of exercises to share the number of children each man has. Once we finished that we shared their names.
    • Man Makers x 5;
    • Man Makers x 5; Presses x 10
    • Man Makers x 5; Presses x 10; Squats x 15
    • Man Makers x 5; Presses x 10; Squats x 15; Curls x 20
    • Man Makers x 5; Presses x 10; Squats x 15; Curls x 20; Rows x 25
    • Man Makers x 5; Presses x 10; Squats x 15; Curls x 20; Rows x 25; Bench Press x 30
We returned our rocks to the pile and finished with some Mary before Horses to the Stable back to the flag: LBC x 20; LBT x 20; Crunchy Frog x 15
    What we learned:
    • Hand Grenada named his kids Davis and Beauregard. Beauregard is a girl.
    • The Wedding Planner is a virile man (but we already knew that).
    • The most popular names among the pax kids were Colin, Christian, Colleen, Carrie, and Caligula
    • Mahatma and Boge named their kids the exact same thing
    • The Architect has never uttered a two-syllable word
    • Rudy originally told us he had three kids. When it came his turn to name them he only named two. He had originally miscounted.
