  • We are better than that.

Thursday came quickly and yet again that means YHC is the Q. YAY!!! So that means plan the morning of.

    The Warm Up

    SSH x30

    Windmills x20

    Copperhead Squats x20

    IW x20

    Arm circles FWD/BWD x20

    Merkins x10

    The Thang

Started off with 5 rounds of pull-ups x7 WW2 sit-ups x7 then sprint 2x40m (sort of). Once done all 5 rounds plank and wait for 6. After completed the 5 rounds YHC did forget to mention that after each round we should have a 60 sec rest, but here at Troubled Waters we are better than that. Therefore we continued and completed 4 rounds, then 3,2,1.

    Mary Time

After the last round we started to hang around one last time for some leg raises IC x10.

Then on our six for some windshield wipers IC x10

    LBC x20

    Penguins x20

Then last but not least Rotisserie Chicken holding for 1 min each side.

Then wrapped up with COT and prayer.

Thanks for letting me lead and always remember if you want to quit…YOU ARE ALWAYS BETTER THAN YOU WERE YESTERDAY!

  • Soup Sandwich

Start off by letting you know that when someone in the military does not look up to standard the get called a soup sandwich. Just a big mess. That is what this day went in a nut shell. It all started with Chipper and Torque using GroupMe app making a plan for the following day Q situation. It went something like this.

    Torque: Who is Q?

Chipper: IDK. We could do a round table style Q!!!

Torque: Cool!! I will be there!!!\

    Chipper: Me too bro!!!!

Then the gloom came and low and behold they both pulled a Shorty aka NO SHOW!

YHC texted the group saying that he woke up late and will be there ASAP. Then pulled into the parking lot seeing Joe Dirt and Terabyte standing around. Then without a blink we started immediately.

    Warm Up

    1 lap around the park

    SSH x20

Windmills x15 enough of that wimp up

    The Thang

Ok to keep up with the soup sandwich tradition we each picked an exercise and just went around. Do  I or the other PAX remember the exercises we did? Not a chance. It went something like this: Joe started of with a upper body then lower body then a core workout. Close enough. Then 10 mins before it all ended Joe Dirt had to cut out early to go to work. So Terabyte and I finished strong. Never again will this sort of thing happen to Troubled Waters but it did make a great story.

Always great to better oneself with this crew

  • A Forecast of Lies

The AO is conveniently sheltered beneath the I-310 concrete umbrella; so although the forecast warned of severe weather, three men confidently posted and were reminded why meteorologists have the best job.  So, without a drop of rain, we circled up to begin treatment.

    Warm-Up:

    1. SSH x20
    2. Copperhead Squats x15
    3. Arm Circles
    4. Forward x15
    5. Backward x15
    6. Merkin x10 (4-count)
    7. Imperial Walkers x20

    The Thang:

Mosey to the basketball courts for some group activity.  One PAX ran about 200 feet to the pull-up bar and back while the remaining PAX worked on completing 50 pull-ups, 100 Squats, and 100 Merkins, alternating runners and exercises until completion.  Still lacking rain but staying under the concrete canopy anyway, PAX got on their six for some core work.

    1. Bay City Scissors x10
    2. Leg Raises x15
    3. LBCs x20
      • 20 seconds of Rocky Balboa’s
    4. Crunchy Frogs x10
    5. Dying Cockroaches x15 (4-count)
    6. Flutter Kicks x20 (4-count)
      • 30 seconds of Rocky Balboa’s

Now we’re awake, but it’s time to get woke.  So the PAX were given two options and chose the next exercise to finish off the morning.

Captain Thor: Ratio workout consisting of 1 Big Boy Sit-Up to 4 American Hammers (Russian Twists). Reaching 10:40 as the time limit elapsed.

    Moleskin:

I think my favorite part of being Q is finding something else Kim Chi says he “hates” and then including that in my next workout.  He liked Dying Cockroaches today (who likes living ones?), so I’m scraping that from all future workouts. I have yet to Q a workout that leaves Torque on the mat, so I may have to start doing two-a-days to catch up. Or outsource my Qs. Either way, there’s something about taking the red pill and getting out in the gloom that provides a unique accomplishment and motive for the day. It’s a limited time offer we have every day, and I remain thankful for the men who assemble to partake.

  • Merkins, Burpees and One Eyed Jacks

Troubled Waters was abandoned Thursday morning, by all but 1 lonely, faithful fermented cabbage.  So, I decided to keep absolutely quiet before this morning, and unsurprisingly, 5 faithful men rolled in before 6:30, including a mothership regular, Maverick who EH’d an FNG from the river parishes.

Plant the flag, no discussion of who was Q’ing, so I was ready to go.  Thankfully, so was Kimchi.  Quick mind-melt.  We’ll tag team.  Perfect, because I was not prepared for a warmup or Mary.

    Kimchi led the warmup:

SSH x Infiniti, with some slow jacks at the end and some strange counts that basically made sure none of the PAX knew how many we did.  It was 50…and it might as well have been 1,000.

Arm Circles – 20 forward, stop. Keep hands up. 20 OH Claps, stop.  Keep hands up.  20 Arm circles backwards, stop.  Keep hands up, 20 Seal Claps.  Kimchi is a shoulder terrorist.

    Merkins x 20.

    Mosy to the Tennis Courts.

Quick stop at the pull-up bar, because I had a wild hair.

All PAX hold a position while one PAX does 5 pull-ups & rotate

Holding: Al Gores, Planks, Left Planks, Right Planks, Al Gores again, (cause I’m not creative)

One More time, but just hold the plank.

Let’s just go to the tennis courts:

    Prisoner Cell Burpees

Start at one corner of the tennis courts, 10 Burpees, run to the next corner, repeat for all four corners, plank for the 6.

    MUCHO MERKINS

We have 2 courts side by side, so we did merkins in the doubles lanes.

    10X Merkins

    10X Wide Merkins

    10X Diamond Merkins

    10X Left Stagger Merkins

    10X Right Stagger Merkins

One more round of Prisoner Cell Burpees and all of our arms were swollen and at 45 degree angles from our bodies.  This was pretty cool.  Kimchi hadn’t told me what he had planned at this point, but I was eager to find out.  I shouldn’t have been.

Kimchi takes over…and pulls a DECK OF CARDS out of his pocket.  All Mary…

Diamonds: Some kind of Russian twist with our legs in the air, Diamond Twists? IDK

    Clubs: Marge Simpsons

    Hearts: LBC’s

    Spades: Windshield Wipers

We did this for a solid 25 minutes and got through most of the deck.  Good stuff. But awful.  Thanks Kimchi.

  • Squat did you say?

Three loyal men took a red pill and entered the gloom with cash in hand to put a downPAINment on our mission to serve each other through accountability and leadership. And what better way to do that than through mutual misery before the world wakes up?  There’s no better time than now, so once the PAX circled up we got things started.

    Warm-Up:

    1. SSH x20 IC
    2. Copperhead Squats x20 IC
    3. Arm Circle – forwards then backwards 15x IC each way
    4. Merkins – 4-count x10
    5. SSH x20 IC
    6. Peter Parkers x20 IC

    The Thang:

Run/Squat: PAX ran half a mile, stopping at each quarter mile to do 25 squats.

Mosey to the tennis courts for some tennis.  Unfortunately, the entire PAX forgot their rackets, so we did 25 squats instead.  But, we’re still here for a good time, so we formed a Circle of Pain.  Before we began, Joe Dirt mentions we were at 95 squats and asked for a nickel to get us all to a dollar.  We all had some change, so we did an extra 5 to satisfy the PAX OCD.  Who doesn’t love even numbers?

    Circle of Pain: 2 rounds

    1. Prisoner Cell Merkin Burpees x10
    2. Bay City Scissors x10
    3. Squats x25

Mosey to the Pull-Up bar for some… you guessed it, core work.

    Core Work:

    1. Leg Raises x10
    2. LBCs x10
      • Break for Squats x25
    3. Flutter Kicks x10
    4. Crunchy Frogs x10
      • Break for Squats x50

Q figured since we were at the pull-up bar, we might as well go ahead and do some pull-ups.  We broke it up into two sets, each with three rounds as we all went around the circuit.

Set 1: One member does 25 squats while the other two either do pull-ups or an inverted row on the low pull-up bar.
Set 2: One member does 50 squats while the other two either do pull-ups or an inverted row on the low pull-up bar.

PAX finished up with two minutes to spare utilize, so we moseyed back to the front of the park and banged out merkins until time ran up.

Counterama, Namerama, and announcements.  Huddle up and prayer to send us off into our

My thought for the day: Lord, chisel us. In this life we fight. And this world is our arena. And like those before us, we stand side by side with our brothers as we press towards the mark of the high calling. And along the way, we pray, Father God, chisel us, and make us more like you.

  • Troubled Skies

It was a dark and dreary day in troubled waters where the skies had keapt all but 2 away from the challenge at hand.

After a disclaimer and extra 60 count for any possible stragglers, the pax proceeded to the spot where the flag should’ve been and began the warm up.

    SSH x 20

    imperial walkers x 20

windmills forward and backward x 15

    overhead seal clap x 20

bird stretch each leg x 10 seconds

after a mosey to the basketball court and finding a dry spot,  the pax cranked out 25 squats, 20 flutter kicks, then 20 scissor kicks, followed by one half mile lap.

Now that we’re awake, the pax then embarks on a trust challenge. At the basketball court, the pax does an exercise while one member runs to the flag and back. Once back that member rejoins the pax and then the next member makes the journey. Normally exercises change for every member that makes the journey, however, with a limited pax, those not running chipped away at their 300 squat challenge. After a few rounds of that, the flag changed to the pull up bar/ box jump bench for 10 reps a piece, 2 rounds each. The Pax finished their squats, moseyed to the flag area, finished out with some flutters, scissors, and ww2 sit-ups and called it a morning, completing our daily challenge in the process.

For those of you who haven’t put it together or don’t know, the flag area is right by the cars and the basketball court is on the other side the park. The trust in the trust challenge was trusting the guy making the journey to come back and not leave you stranded doing squats. However this pax in troubled waters doesn’t have to worry about that one bit.

tclaps to kimchi for making it out

  • Troubled Waters – Wait for the Q!

As the Flag was planted and the PAX arrived, the disclaimer was given with the warning this was my first Q so lets get on this and ride this thing.

    Warm-up

    • Side-Straddle Hops x 10
    • Windmills x 20
    • Side-Straddle Hops x 10
    • Copper Head Squats x 20
    • Side-Straddle Hops x 10

Once the Q learned how to breath and keep cadence, it is a workout all on its own, we then mozy over to the tennis courts, to have a little variation on 4 squares.

At each corner we stood waiting for instructions from the Q – Q getting his breath once again.

4 stations – once all complete, rotate to the next station until all done each for 1 round.

    Round 1 – 4

    • Med Ball Burpbees x 10
    • Merkins x 10
    • WWII Sit-Ups x 10
    • Hollow Body Rocks x 10

Round 5 – the Burpbees were the timer

    • Med Ball Burpbees x 10
    • Merkins x as many as possible
    • WWII Sit-Ups x as many as possible
    • Hollow Body Rocks x as many as possible

And just for some core fun, Superman holds were completed, 3 x 15 seconds each, leaving a mark on the tennis courts to prove we were moving it. Mozy over to the play-set for the next round of fun.

    Follow the Power Merkin

Using 15 Power Merkins as the timer, we worked through each pain point below for a total of 3 rounds.

    • Box jumps or Step-ups x as many as possible
    • Rows x as many as possible
    • Pull-Ups x as many as possible

After all that fun was done, we mozy over to the Flag to do a little ab work on our six.

    • Hello Dolly x 20
    • LBC x 20
    • Full leg raises x 20

Once all was done, the body was beat once again into submission and a great day was in store for us all. Thank you for letting the large guy Q for you!

  • Holding Down the Fort

On the 6th of May 2017, two men gathered in the gloom with a mutual objective. The regulars of Troubled Waters went to support another AO, leaving only two to keep watch over Troubled Waters. And even if our wannabe FNGs had escaped the EH we put them in, it was go time. Mammon was calling on Q after the gloom, so Q audibled and decided we’d try to condense the beat down to 45 minutes. A mosey to the starting line for the morning delight.

    Warm-Up:
Ain’t nobody got time for that, it’s go time! The PAX was on the move and did our rounds around the park, dropping every quarter mile for 25 merkins. But today isn’t chest day.

The PAX lapped a few power walking FIAs (unofficial), realizing the 6:30 AM Saturday “gloom” might as well be the afternoon. Halt at the pull-up bar for a change of pace.

    Quick Circle Line of Pain:
    1. PCMBs (Prisoner Cell Merkin Burpees) x10
    2. Pull-Ups x10
    3. Merkins x10
Well that was nice, let’s do it again.

Okay, enough of that, on your feet! Double time to the tennis courts. A set of 10 Bay City Scissors just to say we did abs today too.

Now, who’s bright idea was it to do 300 squats a day? That’s irrelevant. 6 sets of 50 squats coming right up! The PAX took brief rests in between sets to do bench dips and daydream about what the crew was doing at the Mothership AO. With burning quads, Q thundered his seal of approval during the last set. I believe it went something like this:

    PAX approved.

Our watch was over and the PAX was content with our decision to take the Red Pill today and continue our quest to be HIM. Counterama and Namerama (nothing but mutual hate today), Announcearama, and the Ball of Man to send us on our way. T-claps to Joe Dirt for his DRP commitment and healthy competition. We may have to upgrade our EH to ETKs to bring in some more FNGs. But for now, the core is strong, and we’re committed to the mission.

  • Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen

And that’s because I took a week to write the backblast.

    The Thang

Warm-up (All IC):  SSH x 30; Imperial Walkers x 30; Windmills x 15; Low Slow Squats x 25; 8-count Body Builders x 15 (Apparently this week’s warm-up area was much cleaner than the one Torque likes to choose).

Back to the flag for some GRT training.  I brought a ruck to share.  We circled up.  One man did Shoulder Presses in cadence while the rest of us did two 8-count body builders.  So that’s 8 shoulder presses and two body builders before the ruck is passed to the next man.  We did two sets so each man did 16 shoulder presses and 28 body builders.

From there we headed to the levee for 5 rounds of Tyson D’Han style.  Start at the top of the levee, run down to River Road for the 10 reps of the prescribed exercise, back up and over the levee to the other side for 10 more reps, back up and over to River Road again for 10 more reps, then to the top to plank and wait for the six.  We did the following exercises:

    • Merkins
    • Lunges
    • Hello Dolly
    • Donkey Kicks
    • Burpees

Quadraphilia – 4 minutes down the levee and back up always facing River Road.  #crowdpleaser

Back to the flag for Jack Webb – 1:2 ratio of merkins to air presses ascending to 10.

    DJ style Mary

    • YHC – Russian Twist IC x 20
    • Chipper – Flutter Kicks IC x 20
    • Joe Dirt – Tin Snips IC x 20
    • Mathlete – Dragon rolls x 10
    • Torque – American Hammer IC x 21 (because Rocky won)
    • Terabyte – WWII Sit-ups x 20
    • Reformer – LBC IC x 20

    Moleskin

    • T-claps to Chobani for posting on his trip to New Orleans.  He asked for prayer as he prepares to travel to Greece for a church plant.
    • T-claps to the D’Han krewe for their continued run of successfully naming FNGs.
    • The levee at Troubled Waters is a definite asset.
    • The Croissant Sandwiches at Donut Land are another asset.  As are the Apple Fritters and the Bacon Maple Donuts.
    • T-claps to Joe Dirt for his box jumping skills demonstrated after the workout.  T-claps to YHC for having enough sense to not try what he did
    • I thought it would be cool to show the pax how I packed my ruck.  They decided it looked like I was smuggling coke into the AO.

  • 2 Miler in Troubled Water

3 dedicated, disciplined, fartsack-averse PAX met in the gloom.  5:30am on the clock, disclaimer Mosy 1/4mi to the basketball court for some warmup

    COP

20x high knees, 20x butt kicks, 20x Windmills, 10x Buddhist Pushups.

YHC had a cool, new beatdown that he found on a BB from an F3 somewhere in Georgia or something, but alas, it was a partner thang and we only had 3.  We’re still growing.  We switched to the standby beatdown.

    1 Mile Run, 100 Pushups, 100 WW2 Situps, 100 Squats, 1 Mile Run

Straight to Work, took a few minutes, but we all finished with time to spare.  Mosy back to the flag for some mary.

20x Weezy Jeffersons, 20x Round the World Weezy Jefferson, (kinda just made that one up, but we did a Weezy to our the right side, returned to parallel, Weezy to the left).  1 min plank.  The plank was too easy.  The PAX didn’t even breathe hard.

    NNM:

We only have one pullup bar in Troubled Waters, but I spotted a nice spot to add some more.  On a picnic shelter, similar to Okwata.  Is it considered vandalism if add pull up bars to a public facility? Also, the basketball court definitely works as a large area for work, rather than the dirt patch on the north end, but dirt is cool…so – whatever.
