  • Brick Fest – from Rudy

Weather: muggy, but fortunately a break between lines of rain. Contrary to Ballast’s prediction, we had a dry workout.

My first Renny Q. YHC is usually tucked away in bed at this time on Sunday am. But with M out of town, I decided to meet the group, and pick up my Renny VQ. And what better way to do it than with one of my favorite workouts – a Brick Fest.

7 PAX were there to watch Frac struggle mightily to park his truck. On the circle. With no other cards within hundreds of feet. Back and forth he went, valiantly trying to figure out how to get close. Then it appeared frustration got the best of him, so he just abandoned the truck and made it to the workout. So 8 PAX went to face the bacon and start a warmup. Then the 9th PAX showed up on typical Triple time.

Thing 1: Off to the Mini, all PAX grab a pair of bricks. Partner up for Dora: 100 Merkins, 200 Floyd Mayweathers, 300 Dying Cockroaches. Heisenberg earned a quick 5 burpee penalty for everyone by asking “Are we supposed to use the bricks for Floyd Mayweathers?”. The timer is a run around the bacon (yes, with bricks) stopping for 1 Mayhem Merkin.

Thing 2: Don’t have time for 11s, so we’ll do 7s. On top of the steps – Brickpees, starting at 6 and counting down. At the fountain, Newtons, starting at 1 and counting up. A newton is like a Floyd Mayweather (sorta), but side-to-side. Shorty of old returned, as he griped and groused about the unfairness of having long arms.

Thing 3: Around to the back of the museum, and take a seat in the People’s Chair. And stay in the chair. Wonder Bra (yes, with bricks). Out and Up, in cadence. x20, then x16, x12, x8 and finally x4. Then (and only then) could we stand up from our comfy chair.

Final Thing: Sunday Mornings x3. Then return to the flag where we could all finally put down the bricks.

For the Renny-Regulars, thanks for letting me Q!

  • The Daniel – from Kilo

YHC woke up ready to Q, ready to pick up the pace to get through this week and ready to honor one of our fallen heroes. Inspired by The Architect’s callout a few weeks ago to Q more this was my 2nd Q in as many weeks. And so on the Eve of El Diablo, YHC did what all good non professional trainers do… googled “hero workouts” and scrolled a little bit until the Daniel popped up. The PAX came out from the gloom, some in cars, some on foot coffee in hand, some on bikes and we began the Thang.

    The THANG:

WOR: SSH, GG, Hillbilly’s, Slow Pagodas, Imperial Walkers, and finished with some TIE Fighters

    @ the Playground
    5 Rounds: 10 pull-ups, 10 merkins, hold a plank and rotate

Mosey to the track for a 400 m Washington Football Team Run

Rock Pile Partners: 10 thrusters, merkins, 11 thrusters, merkins

Mosey to the track for 800 m on your own

Different partners: 10 squats, merkins, 11 squats, merkins

Started a Washington Football Team run but cut it short, PAX were beginning to think something was wrong with YHC… moseyed to a wide spot in the road,

20 count merkin Ring of Fire
    Broga
10 count merking Ring of Fire (lest Vagabond not feel like he was exercising)

Finished with COT: Gratitude for community of F3

  • Crawl Wars: Bear vs Crab – from Space Cowboy

When I arrived back home late Sunday night, I noticed some Scrum commitments from several PAX nursing foot injuries; so, I had to adjust Monday morning’s beatdown to avoid jump roping and running yet still set the bar high.
It was a warm but comfortable morning when I arrived at Kennarie Ridge and I was soon joined by @Frac Sac, @Kenna Brah, @Boo Boo, and @ PVC…in a walking boot. Gave disclaimer and headed to JPAX.

    Warm-Up
    Samson Stretch x10
    Self Love x10
    Low Slow Squats x10
Tie Fighters x10 right leg front and forward arm circles, flapjack x10
    Seal Claps x10
    Overhead Claps x10
    SSH x20

Headed to the possum’s den under JPAX stairs to retrieve cinder blocks

The Thang – Each round performed as a group
    Round 1
    Alternating Block Merkins x 30
Bear Crawl up ramp, run down stairs

    Round 2
    Blockees x 20
Lunges up ramp, run down stairs

    Round 3
    Block Swings x 30
Crab Walk up ramp, run down stairs

    Round 4
    Squats with Blocks x 30
Crawl Bear up ramp, run down stairs

    Round 5
    Overhead Block Press x 20
Backwards Lunge up ramp, run down stairs

    Round 6
    Block Curls x 20
Walk Crab up ramp, run down stairs

    Round 7
    One-Armed Bench Press x 10 each arm
    One-Armed Rows x 10 each arm

The ramp work was challenging especially the up hill crab walks but the “50+ year old only” group endured and marched on. As we reached the apex for the last time, I think I even heard a “Kennarie Ridge” war cry from @Boo Boo! The Scrum Bunch had conquered the bears and crabs! Returned the blocks to the possum and commenced with pole-dancing back to the flag with a mix of high knee slaps, lunges, and KOT’s.
COT and coffee time with Frac

  • Burpees in the Garden – from Fracsac

YHC committed to take the Q a day before, which was good cause when the alarm went off anything but having the Q may have resulted in a fartsack.

7 total posted to see what nonsense the Q had on tap. Not gonna lie, YHC delivered! It was total nonsense.

    It went like this:

    Warmup facing the bacon.

Stations involving sand bags and a jump rope. The timer was run into the temporary garden for burpees x 10. It was originally only 5, but YHC had to take it up a notch when I heard the fountains and felt the peaceful and serenity like conditions. Perfect environment for burpees. Finished off with a bear crawl through the garden.

Ring of fire around the closet art, burpees and squats.

Mosey to the singing oak throwing the frisbee and last man doing 10 jumps with the rope. Burpees for a frisbee drop.

Frisbee toss to make the oak sing. Thumb War made a perfect throw…into the tree. Burpees for missing the chimes.

Mosey back the using the same frisbee and jump rope nonsense. Sunday mornings x 3.

What a start to a great day with a great group of men!

  • Celebrating with Mayhem Merkins – from Rudy

Lovely 65 degree morning at the lakefront. A far cry from last week’s 40 degree gale force winds. 10 PAX to celebrate Mayhem’s birthday. YHC received a few texts suggesting that I use the Mayhem Merkin in the workout. Fear not, that was definitely included in the plan.

5:30am sharp – a quick sing-a-long for Mayhem, then across the street for a warm up. Despite the warm temp, Squints refused to part with his NYY sweatshirt, celebrating opening day.

Thing 1: Route 66, with Mayhem Merkins.

YHC caused confusion by incorrectly calling it 11s. That’s what I had planned – until he arrived and saw how lovely the waters of Okwata were. Fortunately, people quickly figured out what was up. Frac played the roll of Triple Shift by critiquing my form as I demonstrated the MM. Jesus Juice seemed quite confused as to how it was a 10 count exercise. No amount of counting it could quite solve his issues. Thumb War managed to convince a few people to go Shoulder-Tap-Hip-Slap rather than the approved technique. Mayhem and High Rise led the way, while YHC brought up the rear.

    Thing 2: 3/27. YHC has a thing for numbers. Today: 3/27. 27 is 3 cubed. 3*3*3 = 27.

Run the H8 loop. At each corner, do 3 burpees. Counting the starting and finishing point, that yields 9 stops. 3 burpees each. 27 burpees.

Thing 3: The PAX utterly failed when given a choice between a) Repeating 3/27 2 more times (total of 81 burpees) or b) What YHC had up his sleeve. Confusion reigned, and voter fraud was widely reported. So YHC chose plan B.

Top of the levee for a bear crawl indian run to the House of Pain. Then pair up for 5 stations: Pull-ups (or hangs), Big Bois, Dips, Sweat Angels – and the timer: run over the levee for 3 burpees and back.

Bongo talked for the entire 15 minutes – something about how he received an email from a Nigerian prince and was now traveling to go collect his money.

COT – Great to see Floaties out again. Becoming quite a regular already! Okwata never fails to disappoint, so many possibilities out there. And getting to watch the sunrise over the lake for a few minutes afterwards – offers YHC a chance to reflect on life and how to follow the example of these great men and “be better”.
