  • Fueled By The Fallen and Fight Songs

Sat am @ The Muscleship, met at The Foundry for one last hurrah with Meter’s 43. Started off with a quick warmup, then payed respect to fallen Mandeville officer Capt. Vince Liberto, who we dedicated the workout to in “HERO” fashion.

  • It’s a Race!

16 men arrived to stomp through the streets of New Orleans this morning, but YHC had other plans. YHC has enjoyed tracking his endurance and capabilities through the IronPax challenge, H8, and bi-annual F3NOLA races. YHC thought it was time to throw in another way to measure himself and his brethren.

Going forward whenever YHC Qs the 610 Stomp, the workout will be a 3 mile race followed by some fun and games. YHC’s hope is that the Pax will be able to track their time and distance to see how F3 has made us faster and stronger on this journey.

    The Thang

Standard disclaimer and mosey from the flag to the track. The men lined up for an F3 race – 3 miles without using the inner two lanes in the track. This resulted in a 3.2 mile race. The times were as follows:

    1. Shuffles 20:16
    2. Screw Top 23:06
    3. Belloq 23:43
    4. Rudy 23:47
    5. Tua 24:11
    6. Sacagawea 24:15
    7. Jesus Juice 24:51
    8. Rev Sox 25:28
    9. Col. Mustard 27:20
    10. Swiss Miss 28:08
    11. Kuch 27:25 – 11 laps
    12. War Eagle 27:52 – 11 laps
    13. Tool 28:08 – 11 laps
    14. Complicated 25:05 – 10 laps
    15. Hokie Pokey 26:37 – 10 laps
    16. Hawg 27:04 – 10 laps

    The Game

The Pax moseyed through the mud and over to the football field for some ultimate frisbee. The Pax counted off by two and spit into 2 teams. The skins blew out the shirts by a score of 28-7. The winners were YHC, Jesus Juice, War Eagle, Tua, Col Mustard, Kuch, and someone else on my team that I can’t remember.

    The Conclusion

Count-Off, Name-O-Rama, and Prayer at the flag. Thank for playing some games and letting YHC score some touchdowns.

  • Thank you USMC Joey Bovia!

    Introduction to USMC Joey Bovia

Sgt. Joseph “Joey” Bovia, USMC, was a native of Metairie, Louisiana.  He served in the Marine Corps for six years.  Sgt. Bovia volunteered for two deployments to Iraq and his last deployment to Afghanistan.  He was the leader of a combat engineering platoon and was building an outpost to protect an elementary school in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, when his unit was attacked by insurgents.  Sgt.  Bovia was killed in action on August 31, 2010, in the name of freedom and protection.

On August 31, 2019, 10 men of F3 (including FNG Complicated) converged at Muscleship to pay tribute to this hometown hero through a workout, on the 9th anniversary of his sacrifice, created by Sgt. Bovia’s fellow Marines. Sgt. Bovia’s mom was notified of the F3 tribute and she sent her deepest gratitude to the men of F3.  Sgt. Bovia’s mom was assured Joey’s sacrifice would not be forgotten. She expressed her greatest fear is people forgetting Joey.

    Warm up

After an introduction to USMC Joey Bovia, we left the flag and took a slow mosey over to The Foundry to warm up.

Once there, Hokie Pokey solicited assistance from @SOGO for Warm Ups as SOGO has not held his VQ yet.

31 SSH, 8 Merkins, 8 Hill Billies and 8 Arm Circles Forward and Backward for the Warm up

The Tribute ~ 8 stations 31 reps “plus bonus burpees ;-)” in teams of 2 split between 5 stations and then rotating through the 8 stations

    • Hand Release Merkins
    • Low Slow Squats
    • Pull ups with FULL extension at bottom
    • Alabama Ass Kickers
    • Floyd Mayweathers
    • Dips ensuring you get DEEP into the dip
    • Lunges (stepping way out front and getting the back knee down)
    • Mule Kicks (possibly being renamed Sunday Mornings)
    • PLUS we started and ended with 5 burpees and 3 burpees at each transition … 7 transitions x 3 = 21 +5 +5 = 31

There was leftover time so we added some bonuses of planks while our partner ran to the track and back. We concluded by moseying back to the fountain in front of NOMA for step ups and then closing with a circle of 8 minutes of Mary

Thank you Joey Bovia & COT

We closed with our Circle of Trust and once again lifting up RED (Remembering Everyone Deployed) and giving special thanks to those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. We also lifted up @Bell Hop and @Rudy’s Dad and all those dealing with cancer! We also lifted up all those dealing with Hurricane Dorian and those traveling this weekend.

We also welcomed our FNG, Steven Arthur with the F3 name of Complicated which is way to complicated for me to explain here.

As always, I thank my F3 brothers for the opportunity to push myself and hopefully aid in each of you pushing yourselves through my attempt to challenge you at your fitness level while still being able to Q.

Thank you USMC Joey Bovia (RIP 08.31.10)
The tribute with 8 stations and 31 reps at each station
  • A bit of Notre Dame, and a bit of YIPPEE!

19 PAX (incluing Rewatch, downriver from Houston) in the morning gloom to help YHC celebrate the end of his 51st year. Yippee!

Started out with a disclaimer, trying to be more thoughtful than normal with thoughts of Holy Grove in mind. Everyone: be mindful of your health. Hydrate. Modify. Its Hot and Humid. Most important – remain healthy. All this, while continuing to push yourselves. So with thoughts and prayers for Holy Grove in mind, lets get started.

YHC brought along a YIPPEE! bag full of birthday gifts. The idea: all PAX feel free – at any point in the workout – come pick a gift from the YIPPEE! bag. What’s in the bag? A collection of goodies – exercises for the Q, exercises for the PAX, a few special gotchas. Each piece of paper is something new and different.

Mosey over to the Great Lawn.

Warmup with some stretching and SSH (x51). First dip into the YIPPEE bag produces 20 Dips for everyone at the benches! Its going to be a fun hour.

    7 Heisman Trophy Winners

7 of Diamonds, in honor of the ND 7 heisman trophy winners (Bertelli, Hart, Lattner, Lujack, Hornung, Huarte and Brown). Yes, Douille is correct in noting that Hornung is the only Heisman winner from a losing team. Douile was incorrect in thinking Hornung lost to Tulane.

PAX split into 4 groups. 4 cones set up in a diamond shape.

Round 1: 7 Bobby Hurleys at a cone, Bear Crawl to the next. Repeat all the way around

Round 2: 14 Merkins, Lunge Walks

Round 3: 21 Squats, Crab Walks

Round 4: 28 Flutter Kicks, Lunge Walks

War Eagle and Catfish seem to be greatly enjoying the YIPPEE bag – produce burpees, merkins, squat jumps for the PAX, for themselves, for the Q. “10 Burpees for Me”. “20 Merkins for PAX of choice” (tough break, Angie’s List). “15 Squat Jumps for the Q”. “10 Genuflects for the PAX”. The cards are flying faster.

YHC also especially enjoyed War Eagle’s “Sing Happy Birthday to the Q”. Thank you.

    11 National Championships

Yes, YHC is aware that our glory days are old. No, YHC does not care. Yes, YHC always believes that next year represents our return to glory.

11s with Burpees and Catalina Wine Mixers. Go. PAX now are running past the YIPPEE bag with more frequency, resulting in more draws.

Pop Tart pulls a “Sprint vs the Q”, and pays dearly for his arrogance – slipping and falling as he turns to mock the slower Q. The Tortoise revels in his glorious victory. Rewatch and Catfish both draw Laps around the park.

Triple Shift adamantly refuses to approach the Yippee bag. He must not like birthdays. Or presents.

    5 Pillars

YHC has to call off the 11s somewhere around half-way point due to time constraints. 5 Pillars of Holy Cross Education: Mind, Heart, Zeal, Family, Hope. For each one, PAX will do 5 Rise Ups (squat for a 5 count, then jump up, return to squat position). Even while explaining the exercise, Hokie is standing at the bag waiting to draw. And of course, he pulls “10 Burpees for the Q”. Everyone else gets a 10 count while YHC gets 10 burpees in.

At Zeal, Rev Sox pulls “20 Merkins for the Q”. Thanks. Rev Sox leads PAX in 5 Rise Ups while YHC knocks out 20 Merkins.

    Mary

Circle up for last 5 minutes of Mary. But we never get to Mary. More cards are drawn – “10 Burpees for everyone”. Seems there were more Burpee cards than YHC remembers putting in the bag.

Alas, we never got to the Duck Duck Goose game that YHC was really hoping for. Next time… But for now, return to the flag.

    COT

Count-off: 19 PAX (including 2 FNGs). Thank you all for celebrating my birthday with me! First, from Atlanta, still a dirty bird fan, so the PAX were unanimous in welcoming “28-3” to the tribe. Then – deep voice, handsome beard, claims he might kinda sing a bit: Pavarotti, glad to have you with us!

Close up with announcements, intentions and prayers to remember each day granted to us is a gift. May we treasure it, and use it wisely.

Thank you all for the opportunity to lead. I welcome your patience with me as I try new and potentially stupid things at workouts.

  • Bring in the lefty

Over the weekend my fellow LVCC member, and unofficial F3 chauffeur, Screw Top was injured (not seriously) in a purely unavoidable pool incident in which he was emulating Odell Beckham Jr. Thankfully Kuch being the big man that he is volunteered to step up as replacement Q. Unfortunately it was determined on Tuesday afternoon that Kuch’s schedule would not allow him to Q. So your resident relief pitcher stepped in to clean up the mess. I scoured the F3 exicon for a solid routine and came across one that had a fitting name for me but also would somewhat put me out of my comfort zone.

25 PAX gathered at our usual location for The Foundry on a typical hot, humid, windless morning. Disclaimer was given and off we went to the track.

    Warm Up (all exercises IC):

    • SSH x 20
    • Windmills x 10
    • Arm circles fwd/rev x 10 each
    • Grass grabbers x 15
    • Self love x 15

    Tha Thang:

I found a routine on the exicon called The Cooper which was fitting for me since my youngest 2.0 is named Cooper, who also happened to turn 3 y.o. 4 days ago. The Cooper consists on running a lap around the track then performing 10 burpees, 10 squats, and 10 merkins. Then run a lap and follow with 9,9,9, etc. in descending order until completed.

T-claps to Shuffles and Holygrove who absolutely killed it. Speaking for myself I still had over 2 laps plus exercises to go when they finished. As instructed (rather poorly) anyone who had finished all 10 rounds were to plank, perform the ISI squat, do some mary, or help sweep the 6. I apologize if I missed anyone deserving of T-claps.

Around 6:10 I yelled for anyone who hadn’t completed all 10 rounds to circle up back at the start with the rest of the PAX for some mary. To keep in line of helping newer members get practice with leading workouts Mmmbop, Tug Boat, and Pop Tart stepped to each lead an exercise. T-claps to all 3 men.

Mosey back to the flag. I explained to the PAX my reasoning for choosing this routine. I will never be the best distance runner, I will never be able to easily crank out merkins, and burpees are among my least favorite exercises. But I wanted to better myself in these areas and hopefully everyone that participated was able to do the same. Countoff, name-o-rama, announcements, sweat ball of man.

  • Kicking Some Grass with The King

It was a somber day on August 16, 1977.  Elvis Aaron Presley was just finishing up his morning glory when the King collapsed due to heart failure.  Today we honor that great American in the best way we know how; by empowering our bodies through exercise and our souls through listening to his music.  Elvis was a HIM before we know what a HIM was.

    W/U

    • Side Straddle Hop x 42
    • Imperial Walkers x 20
    • Hill Billies x 20
    • Arm Circles x 20
    • Mountain Climbers x 2o
    • J Lo’s x 10

The Thang – Complete each exercise for the duration of the song playing.

    • Hound Dog – Doggie Paddle 2:15
    • Teddy Bear – Bear crawl & Crawl Bear suicide – 1:48
    • American Trilogy – Merkins x10, Staggeredx 10, Staggered x10, Diamond x 10, Wide x 10, Chuck Norris x10,  Crossfit x 10, – 4:28
    • Burning Love – Pure Burn (1. Face the fence 2. Get in the squat position 3/4 up while holding the fence; 3. On the balls of your feet (tiptoes);  Pulse 3/4 down to 1/2 (90 degrees) X 10;  Pulse 1/2 all the way down X10; Repeat) – 2:50
    • Blue Suede Shoes – 1 merk, 2 LBC, 3 Squats,  25 Rocky Balboa’s – 2:00
    • Can’t Help Falling – Tunnel of Love 3:02
    • Don’t be cruel – Burp & Merk  (add a merkin to each burpee) – 2:03
    • Marie’s The Name x 3 – We brought those who had not Qed to the middle to lead.  T-Claps to Breadsticks, Tug Boat, and Fast Tax

Announcements –  IRON PAX!  Sign up at https://f3greenwood.com/ironpax-form/  We are currently in 2nd place by 11 Pax.

Intentions – Those with cancer, our new students starting another school year especially Brady Lefleur, those intentions unspoken and kept in our hearts.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead, thank you very much!

  • ARMAPALOOZA

The Uptowner Q list was running low, so YHC jumped at a chance to give Hawg a break and tryout an unused Uptowner resource YHC has had his eye on for a while. Turns out, a no running beatdown is more of a challenge than this F3 neophyte imagined. YHC was honored to lead 13 men through the gloom for this experiment.

    Warmup x 20

SSH, IW, Arm Circles (10 forward/10 back), Grass Grabbers, Plank Jacks, and Abe Vigodas. There was quite a bit of mumblechatter towards the end of the warmup by a PAX who will remain nameless to protect the guilty so YHC imposed a five-burpee penalty to maintain order. The offending PAX refused to clap during the burpees, which almost lead to another round of penalty burpees, but there was more work to be done so the group was spared.

    The Thang

The PAX was instructed to grab a medium-sized rock and slowsey to the parking lot in front of the gym. YHC is a fan of Dora 1-2-3 and merkin ladders. The PAX partnered up for 100 curls, 200 overhead presses, and 300 air squats (modified from squat presses with rock after a round or two of an excruciating arm and shoulder workout). While PAX 1 completed the above exercises, PAX 2 bear crawled from the parking lot to the steps of the gym for a merkin ladder (one merkin at the base of the steps and adding a merkin for each step up, for a total of 35), then lunge walk back and switch with PAX 1. Tclaps to mmmBop and Amnesty for bear crawling through a rather large puddle without complaining (guess Amnesty learned his lesson after the penalty burpees). After completing the ARMAPOLOOZA workout, the PAX circled up for a three-minute ISI compliant squat.

    COT- Nam-a-rama, announcements, and prayers.

Thank you F3 for another opportunity to lead. It’s never taken lightly and always an honor. Thanks to the PAX for participating in my experiment. Parts of this beatdown will be repeated at a future beatdown, but YHC will look to modify to strive for a full body workout with compound exercises.

  • Substance over Form

Conditions: 82 with a Heat Index of 91. Slight breeze and lots of wet, freshly cut grass to frolic in.

    Warm-up

    SSH x 20, Mt. Climbers x 20, IW x 20, Alternating Lunges x 14, 3 Rounds of the Suck (6 SSH, 6 Merkins, 6 Jump Squats)

    The Thang

Mosey over the 4 hills of Lafreniere landing on the top of the 4th. For a few rounds of 3-6-3 exercises (3 slow reps, 6 normal, 3 slow)

    • Merkins
    • Squats
    • Merkins
    • Sumo Squats
    • Werkins

Mosey back to the second hill (the highest and possibly the steepest) and gather together about 40 yards from the base. Here we broke out for one of my favorite Iron Pax workouts from last year:

    • 50 Squats
    • 40 Big Boi Situps
    • 30 Merkins
    • 20 MKGs (aka Bonnie Blairs) 2 is one
    • 10 Burpees
    • Run up and over the hill and back
    • Start rolling through the Suck until the 6 arrives.

We did two rotations of this and then headed back up the high hill for some Quadraphilia – 4 minutes of running down the hill forward and up the hill bakerds. #crowdpleaser

Back to the flag where we prayed a prayer of gratitude and prayed for those in need.

    NMM

The internet has this to say about a heat index of 91 – Extreme caution: at this condition, heat cramps and heat exhaustion are possible. Continuing activity could result in heat stroke.

Don’t listen to the internet. Today felt pretty nice. I only lost 3 lbs. of sweat, compared to the 5 I lost during the 10 mile run with Rudy the other day.

As you may know, YHC’s Merkin form ain’t great. I blame it on my legs. They are too heavy. Same reason I am a terrible swimmer. My legs sink. Maybe it’s all the muscles in them. I don’t know. Anyway, t-claps to Mahatma for pointing this out once again with a “Bruh, you gotta do somethin’ ’bout that form.” With tips about glute activation and some feedback from War Eagle (who should have been working out instead of standing around watching me), I think I made some progress.

We had to do the 3-6-3 Merkins twice, because I royally screwed them up the first go around. Didn’t help that I started in an ant pile. But that is no excuse, just a condition that I should have overcome. I’ll be better.

Quadraphilia brings back such good memories of Okwata. I have to get back out there. I will be overwriting some of the LVCC names that have copied and pasted their way through the Q-sheet so that we can all enjoy a round of Quadraphilia in the tall, wet grass of the steep Okwata levee.

And what’s up with calling running backwards up a hill Bernie Sanders? I see that term used all over F3 Nation. I don’t think Bernie would be all that flattered. Bernie is a man that never gives up, even after everyone else has, and the rest of the world sees absolutely no reason he should still be hanging in there. But Bernie doesn’t care what you have to say. Bernie don’t quit. He’s a fitting namesake for seeing how long you can keep your chin above a pull-up bar, or how long you can hold an Al Gore (oops that one is already named after a Democratic Presidential Candidate). Anyway naming an exercise after him because it burns and his first name is Bernie, is weak in my opinion. C’mon F3 Nation, we can do better. If anyone should be looking at the character of a man it should be us. Let the rest of the world focus on outward appearances and names that sound like Burn, but are spelled differently.

  • Rock City Rocks

YHC hasn’t been at Rock City for few months because of the launch of Sweaty Bells, which is a Sunday workout with kettle bells. Willie and YHC had thought of bringing their kettle bells to a Rock City workout one day but could only imagine the mumble chatter from a PAX named Rudy. Because it’s been awhile since the last Rock City, YHC was super excited to have an opportunity to Q again for the 2nd time at this AO. YHC is very happy to see many new faces just in few months. F3 Nola is definitely growing at a great pace, which leads to a FNG, later named Scam Newton, EH’ed by Marlin. At 5:30 am, YHC gave his standard disclaimer…. and off the PAX.

Everyone grabbed a rock and headed to the middle of the football field. Rudy apparently is not strong enough to do that because he’s so used to warming up first before the PAX pick up the rocks. But Rudy somehow managed to suck it up and do what the Q said.

    Warm-ups

Because there are so many new PAX who have never Q’ed before, YHC took this opportunity to invite Baloo to help with the warm up exercises:

    SSHs x 30 IC

    Windmills x 10 IC

Arm Circles and Seal Claps x 15 IC

    Hill Billies x 20 IC

    Mountain Climbers x 15 IC

    Round 1

Picked a partner for the entire workout. Everyone lined up at the 40 yard line of the football field. While one PAX lunge walked toward the field goal post, the other PAX ran backwards to the field goal post then ran back towards his partner. Flap jack until the team crosses the end zone. Once in the end zone, each PAX did 10 burpees each. However, while one PAX was doing the burpees, the other PAX was in Goblet Squat position with the rock until his partner finished with his burpees and then flap jack.

    Round 2Broken up Dora

    Starting from the end zone….

Dora Part 1 – finished 80 thrusters as a team. While one PAX was doing the thrusters, the other PAX ran out to the 40 yard line and did 10 curls and moseyed back to the PAX. Flap jack until 80 thrusters were completed by the team.

Dora Part 2 – finished 200 LBCs with the rock as a team. While one PAX was doing LBC’s, the other PAX ran to the 40 yard line and did 10 chest presses and moseyed back to his partner. Flap jack until 200 LBCs were completed by the team.

Dora Part 3 – finished 300 shoulder taps as a team. While one PAX was doing shoulder taps, the other PAX ran to the 40 yard line and did 20 Rocky Balboa’s on the rock and moseyed back to his partner. Flap jack until 300 shoulder taps were finished.

Round 3 – Sprint Relay Race

Starting from the end zone, one PAX sprinted to the 40 yard line and did 5 manmakers and sprinted back and tagged his partner. The partner did the same thing. Rinse and repeat until finishing a total of 4 rounds as a team so that each PAX did 10 manmakers.

After the sprint, the PAX did some active stretching with “open gates” and “zombie walk” to stretch those legs and hamstrings. Mumble chatter again from Rudy saying that we should have done these stretches at the beginning of the workout and not at the end. YHC believes Rudy is just getting anxieties because college football season is almost here. And he knows how crappy the losing Irish is going to be this season. Ouch!!!

Brought our rocks back to the pile and moseyed back to the flag. YHC didn’t managed the time correctly and ended the workout at 6:17 a.m.

    COT

Count-a-Rama – 24 PAX, Name-a- Rama, announcements, and intentions. One FNG named Scam Newton because he is an Auburn alumnus. Once again, thank you for the opportunity to lead. SYITG

    King Kong

Willie, King Kong, Gabrielle, and Jingle Vader managed to meet up for coffee at PJs on Magazine Street after their respective beatdown. Today was also the inaugural beatdown on UNO campus lead by Tool. During coffee, YHC found out there were 14 PAX at the newly launched AO and 17 PAX at the Skinny. There was a total of 55 PAX on the Southshore participated a workout today. Great way to start off the week!!!

  • Sandbagging it

Started with a short jog to the Tulane sign and circled up.

    • 20XSSH
    • 20XWindmills
    • 20XArm Circles
    • 20XReverse Arm Circles
    • 20XPeter Parkers

Ran back to the park and grabbed the sandbag that I stashed earlier.

Started running on the track while doing something I like to call “no bag left behind”. The idea is that one person takes the sandbag and the group runs on the track. The first person to run pass a “running man” on the ground has to run back to take the sandbag from the person holding it. Repeat until you get to he next exercise.

No bag left behind to the drinking fountain by the greens. Circled up for some Mary while passing the bag around.

    • LBC
    • Freddy Mercury
    • American Hammer

More no bag left behind to the monkey bars and split up into 3 groups and did the following:

    • 10 Pull-ups as the count
    • Dry docks
    • Pass-the-bag which is basically just throwing the bag around.

Back to the track for no bag left behind again. Stopped at Magazine street entrance. For 10 OYO burpees.

No bag left behind back to the flag for COT.
