  • Under a Raging Okwata (and Moon)

After being totally motivated by a behind the music making of “Who’s Next” program the night before, I was motivated to lead a workout.  However the next morning had different plans.  The rain and wind questioned me why I should be going out on a morning like this and so did My Wife,  giving me no inspiration.  Put on my lead boots and get in a fast truck and I am there regardless,  I somehow volunteered to Q this week!

Surely no one would show up on a morning like this,  and I could call that a Bargain for Q workout,  but maybe not the best I ever had.  But the PAX did….,  and so did I,  that is getting use to colder wet temperature.

After a quick disclaimer and mosey, it’s time to for warm ups or Getting in Tune:

    25 SSH

    20 IW

    20 Peter Parkers

20 Abe Vigotas (a bit out of rhythm….)

Now we find ourselves Going Mobile along the levee and a couple hill sprints to the lake front.

The intended dryer part of the work becomes wet due to rage of Okwata.

It’s time to get our kicks on Route 66 wth Burpees,  increase of 1 Burpee each planter to a total of 8 all while running back to base between each one.

The across the street back to Canal blvd,  expecting a 4 corners…., no, we Won’t Get Fooled Again and instead complete a mild Dora 123

    50 – Merkins

    100-LBCs

    200-Squats

Each partner went mobile running to top of levee while the other did routine and kept counting.

Still got a lot of time….   Off to the house of pain where  no one hides,  not even Behind Blue Eyes

Timer — Bear crawl to top of levee

    squats — other group

    chin ups — other group

Back to the shovel flag for perhaps some ab work or even mindful yoga poses even Meher Baba or Baba O’Riley could become at peace with

    2:00 plank

    15 flutter kicks

Back to plank, with leg lifts 7 on each side

final request circle of Merkins by Surge to complete 100 reps as a collective.  Times Up.

Count off, name-a-rama, announcements and final circle of trust for faith so we can “get together,  before we get much older”.

here is the picture to prove it,  with the 7 Pax and the swagger of the other picture and a bit wetter.  This workout turned out to have a theme after all.  See y’all on the radio tomorrow morning.

  • Book Club: 3 of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

YHC arrived with the some trepidation as it had been a while (at least a year) since last Qing.   A large PAX was present missing a shovel flag.  YHC was going to start with the Pledge of Allegiance, but it will have to wait till next Q.

We moseyed to the great lawn for a COP (Circle of Pain/Pro-activity) warmup:

SSH IC 49, IW IC 49, Squats IC DU 49, Calf Raises IC UD 49, Arm Circles Small IC 14 F & B, Arm Circles Large IC 14 F & B, Merkin DU 7, Diamond Merkin DU 7, Wide Merkin UD 7, Staggerd Left DU 7, Staggered Right DU 8, Wide Merkins DU 7

There was some mumble chatter about the count of 49.  Many thought it was a birthday themed Q, as YHC  hit 49 in August.  But no, this workout was based on Steven Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, as  7 X 7=49.

YHC  directed the PAX to the museum fountain and stayed with 6.  Upon my arrival, I was pleased to see the PAX planking.  It was at the fountain YHC explained today’s theme and introduced the first habit.

Habit 1: Be Proactive. As men, husbands, fathers, and leaders, we are faced with numerous concerns.  Habit 1 teaches us to focus on the things we can do something about.  As we become more proactive, we expand our circle of influence.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind.  In his book, Dr. Covey asks the reader to visualize their own funeral. “To Begin with the End in Mind” means to start with a clear understanding of your destination.

I volunteered Rudy to run to the 7th tree along the green space known as Dreyfous Meadow and place a set of cones, approximately 100 yards.  The first set of cones represented our ultimate end (death).  YHC asked the PAX to think about their legacy and what do they want to accomplish during this lifetime.

Bear Crawl towards death – 7 trees est 100 yards.  This totally sucked, and there was in fact talk of death.  However, we all lived to crawl again.

YHC volunteered Hawg to take the cones and move them down another 7 trees.  This time the PAX was asked to think about life in 10 years.

We alternated lunge walks and bear crawls passing 7 trees.  86 was  the next volunteer to move the cones down 7 trees – This time we thought about what do we want to accomplish in the next year.

We alternated bear craws and lunge walks.  The fast PAX took the proactive step to move the cones one additional tree.  We covered the distance of the medeow which is about 300 yards.  Thanks to DaParish for bringing gloves for those who did not see the forewarning on GroupMe.

If you don’t make a conscious effort to visualize who you are and what you want in life, then you empower other people and circumstances to shape you and your life by default.  Highly effective people are driven and not drifters.

We collected the cones and moseyed to the green space called the John S. Mcilhenny Meadow.

Habit 3: Put First Things First.  In Habit 2 you set your vision.  In Habit 3, you manage your time by focusing on those activities that are the most important in supporting your vision.

We used the cones to  layout Covey’s Time Management Matrix. It consists of four quadrants.

Quad 1 Urgent and Important – Ex. deadlines, emails, meetings, tests.  The idea is you want to manage the activities in this quadrant and not get stuck in quad 1.  YHC used 49 RedBull Seal Jacks IC in an attempt to drive this point home.  YHC was later told by Douille that “Redbull Smurf Jacks” was called out in error leading to confusion and mumble chatter.

Quad 2 Not Urgent and Important – Ex. relationship building, exercising, spirituality, continuing education.  This is the quadrant we want to focus on for most of our time.  This quadrant was next to the singing tree in City Park, but with no wind, the chimes were silent.  Bogey sang instead.  YHC used 7 EMOM with 7 burpees as the exercise.   All 7 habits reside in this quadrant.

Quad 3 Urgent and Not Important – Ex. Facebook updates, phone solicitation, junk email. This quadrant should be avoided if possible. 21 Monkey humpers

Quad 4 Not Urgent Not Important – Examples watching TV, social media.  This quadrant should be limited.  Goofballs 14 IC.

There wasn’t enough time to cover the last 4 habits.  The first three habits deal with private/personal leadership.  The next three deal with pubic leadership and the 7th habit is about continuous renewal/improvement.  They will have to wait for the next F3Nola Book Club.

    Habit 4: Think Win Win

Habit 5: Seek first to Understand then be Understood

    Habit 6: Synergize

Habit 7:  Sharpen the Saw – Self- Renewal

With time running out, we headed back towards the virtual shovel flag stopping for water and some Mary and our last 7 merkins to bring us up to 49.

    Merkins 7 UD

    Peter Parkers – 21 IC

    Crunchy Frogs – 7  IC

In regards to  Habit 1, Being proactive, and Habit 2, Putting first things first, there is a saying attributed to Mark Twain. “If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.”

    COT

Countdown, Name-O-Rama.  Welcome Stitch (from Hawaii) and Navigator (Red Sock fan who was able to navigate from Uptown to City Park. A skill still rarely seen from our Uptown brethren).  We closed with a ball of man and a prayer.

    Moleskin

I challenge the PAX to work on Habits 1-3 and eat frogs as needed.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead.

  • 10k Foray

YHC stood in for Captain Sparkles today, as he had some excuse or another for not making it out – something to do with resting the week between running a half marathon and attacking a half iron man – or some such weak sauce non-sense.  I was, once again, admiringly impressed with the definition of punctuality that my F3 brothers are renowned for, as The Pelican arrived 2 minutes before 4:45 and Dundee and Carpool arrived 2 minutes after.

Commencing in reverse, as is Captain’s Cove tradition, we started out with namorama and prayerorama. After our illustrious QIC initially aimed the PAX towards the boat ramps, we comically course corrected and were off at a pace of 4 guys focused solely on endurance (and, well, survival).

I always love the cove because it consistently proves to be a great opportunity to get to know your fellow F3s a little better. Today’s PAX, for example, hail from as close as Metairie and Slidell, to as far as Arizona! We had  three loving fathers, a former soldier, and a blue devil.  They showed dedication by arriving at 4:45 am to run 10k. They showed heart by pushing themselves without complaints or gripes. There was even a showing off the wearing of big-boy pants  by the tightening of sphincters as they passed the point of no return, more colloquially known as the sunset point port-o-potty! I mostly appreciate the comaraderie and brotherhood of the men who aim to add value to their lives and those of the people around them.

  • Sumer Is ICumen In

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy … One of these mornings you’re gonna rise up singing
And you’ll spread your wings and you’ll take to the sky.” — Bess thinking of Porgy

But not this morning.  It felt like summertime had returned with a vengeance: hot, sticky and no breeze.  But livin’ ain’t easy, Bogey kept the singing at bay and all the moseying did was get the PAX plum tir’d.  So here’s The THANG for a hearty PAX of seven after YHC’s disclaimer.

  • Buckets, Basketballs, or Beatdown?

Upon arrival  at 6:15am, I see a bike resting on the flag. I also noticed the the parking lot was much less crowded than usual. At 6:30am, as Butt  Splice and Chewy ran up to the flag, I quickly learned that Splice did a pre-workout thang before the pre-workout thang by riding his bike to the mother ship. What an over achiever!!!   As we started the “warm-up”, we quickly grew to a group of 10, Grundy, Chewy, Butt Splice, Maverick, Bushwacker, Lonase,  Moby Dick, Einstein,  Tanked Up, and yours truly. As we started the Thang, we grew to a group of 12 as Skim Milk and his FNG, later nameed Bourbon Ball arrived.

Great job to Bourbon Ball who completed a great beatdown,  Lonas who, after a short rest that God was telling him to take, was able to finish running the rest of the beatdown, and for Bushwacher for praying us out.

Meet at the track when finished.

Thanks Rudy and Harry Caray for the F2!

    Thanks for letting me lead.

  • My O Face

    My O Face

Soooo almost fartsacked this morning to walk up to the Pax and get the “Oh you showed up!”.  Which prompts the immediate reply “Oh Shit! I’ve got the Q”

So a short mosey for an even shorter warm up.

    25 SSH

    20 Mountain Climbers

    20 Parker Peters

Mosey back from whence we came over to the pull up bar station.  On the way we stopped for a quick 10 Mericans and back on the track to the pull up station.  Broke up into 3 groups:

Count was 10 Push Pulls (1 pushup followed by 1 pull up) should have done 2 of each.

Other paxs did Lunges & some other exercise

We then moseyed over the the soccer field and separated back into 3 groups

Count was 10 Pull ups, while the Pax did some other exercises.  I didn’t plan it and can’t remember so lets just mosey on.

    Next session was DORA

    100 Carolina Dry Docks

    200 Dips

    300 LBCs

We then lunged our way to the end of the parking lot and jogged to the kick ball field for a circle of fire.  Increasing reps of Mericans around the circle till we each got to do 5 reps.  Tclaps to Pony Boy for keeping me honest on these.  We rotated on to our six and finished with a little Mary (Box Cutters & Russian Twist).

  • 41 is greater than 40

Mother nature treated the PAX to some great weather for the second morning in a row….T-claps!  Today is YHC’s 41st b-day so what better way to start the day than Q a workout.  After Hawg put a plea out on GroupMe the we need 41 PAX to post for the occasion, some of the guys must have felt the urge to head to Pontiff instead of Wolfpack or the elusive fartsack prairie.  I was suprised to see 11 eager men trickle in as we began the workout.  Here’s what we did:

Usual disclaimer and informed the PAX that 41 would be the number of the day.

    SSH x41

    IW x41

    Low Country Crab x19

    High Plank Hold x76sec

Grab a rock suitable for curling/pressing and circle up in the field for the following, all in cadence:

Low Plank w/R Leg up x41 sec

    Press x10

    Finale:

41 Burpess (in lieu of a cake and 41 candles) in 5 min.  (10 each minute on the minute for the first 4min then 1+plank or catch-up/plank on the last minute)

Times up, rocks back to base.

YHC had turned to the interwebs the night before to search “turning 41” and jotted down a few highlights to share with the PAX.  Thoughts on turning 41 according to the all so veracious Google search:

“You’re now old enough to give advice”

“You know what’s important in life”

“Your kid’s smiles will increasingly become band-aids for the soul”

“As you watch the way people age, you’ll believe fitness and health are increasingly valuable”

And to cap it off, a quote from George Burns – “You can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old”

COP concluded with a reminder we need to recruit some new blood and a shout out to The Sky Q.

Thanks for letting me lead.  Also, thanks to the PAX for continuing to push me and others.  I am confident it will allow us to age gracefully.

    “Eclipseville”

    Pre-Thang
The last time a galactic phenomenon of this magnitude spanned across the United States, planet Earth
was on the brink of its First World War. Strange things happen when the moon gets in the way of the
sun. Yogis amp up their sun salutations and lunar flows. Bats fly in the middle of the day. Animals get
confused, rabid, and frisky. Odd shadows dance through tree leaves. Humans flock to a single location,
and typically, a party ensues. Well this AM, three men from various parts of the country united for what
you may call an F3 Sun Worshipping session in preparation for what is to come.
    Warm-Up
How small of a world it is to meet out front of an old house that once belonged to YHC and Banjo’s
family. Mosey down Main Street to hit the Rails for Trail pathway stopping for a Quarter Cindy Q’d by
    Banjo:
5 Rounds OYO: 5 pull ups, 10 Merikans, 15 Single Leg Squats
    The Thang
Continue our mosey down the trail stopping before the bridge for a brief session with Mary Q’d by YHC
    IC Box Cutters x 20
    IC Vladimir Putin’s/Russian Twists/American Hammers x 20
Mosey across the bridge into the Justice Center playground to complete another Quarter Cindy:
5 Rounds OYO: 5 pull ups, 10 Merikans, 15 Single Leg Squats
Mosey through the Eclipseville festival booths, across Little River, past the blow-up Bounce Houses, and
by the fountain. Homes Q’d the PAX through a series of IC Dips x 14, 30 second hollow hold/6 inches &
arms above head, more IC Dips x lost count, 20 more squats for good measure, and lunges around the
fountain. YHC shall dub this routine…”Jelly Legs.”
Mosey back through the festival area and up the hill on Bethel Street. Now, what kind of sun
worshipping would it be without a little skipping? After turning back down Main Street, gay skip
frolicking with a smile on our faces definitely turned a couple of heads. Sorry, not sorry, for being happy
to share a beat down amongst brothers. We ended where we started with the obligatory picture and
    some sweaty fellowship.
Now, remember to where eye protection and see how frisky things get when the temperature drops 20
degrees at 1:23pm tomorrow afternoon. #Eclipseville
