  • The Ruck Suck, No Joy at the Joy – from Bolt

YHC was thrilled he switched with Frac for today’s Q bc at 5:28 it looked like he would’ve been solo otherwise. True to NOLA roots 2 more PAX rolled in hot before the disclaimer while the fifth/final one, Papa Smurf joined during our first warm up exercise:

Warmup IC: SSH (25x),arm circles forward/back, tclaps, seal claps, Moroccan night clubs, self love; Abe Vigodas, Toy soldiers, Hillbillies (15x), static hold Jamie stretch (center, R/L leg over leg)

Mosey over levee with rucks plus Sweetness splayed out across Papa Smurf’s shoulders who would be his partner (sans ruck) for the suck.

For time (20 min): add 5 reps to each exercise in the next round.
    * 5 x Burpees (Ruck on Back)
    * 5 x Squats (Ruck on Front or Back)
    * 5 x 4-Count Mountain Climbers (Ruck on Back)
    * 5 x Push-Ups (Ruck on Back)
    * 5 x Sit-Ups (Ruck on Front)
    * 5 x Ruck Curls

Props to Kennah Brah for getting into the round of 30 reps!

Mosey back over levee to flag for 4 min of Mary 45/15 tabata style)

Close it out with all the trimmings. (COT)

  • Uptown(er) Beat Down – from Bolt

Warmup IC (to Rapper’s Delight): Windmills, SSH, arm circles forward/back, tclaps, seal claps, Moroccan night clubs, self love (all 20x); Toy soldiers, IW (15x)

    The Thang:
Mosey to gym and grab some wall for a plank to the song Bodies Hit the Floor: plank>donkey kick title>merkin the count>plank between

With moisture in our foreheads it was time to mosey to the rock pile and select medium rocks and three heavy ones.

Rocks in pairs at stations lined up with each tree along the parking lot. 2 PAX doing 20 reps/exercise: chest press, overhead press, squats, triceps press, curls

Return to pile and finish with 30 dying cockroaches before a mosey to flag for the standard closing.

  • Glorious Return to WPM – from Fracsac

26 Pax made a choice to take the DRP on their journey to get right and posted to The Legendary Wolf Pack Mountain to see what YHC had on the beat down menu. With a shovel flag planted, disclaimer was given, then:

Mosey over to the Rosy Palm Court and circle up for a warmup:

    IW IC x 15
    Abe Vigodas x 10
    Grass Grabbers x 10
Bat wings AC, SC, OH, MNC (dancing encouraged)
Catalina Wine Mixers IC x 10

Count off and pax instructed to remember their number. Then count 1,2,1,2….

    Mosey to the mountain…

Two columns, hence the 1 and 2 count. Run to the top of the mountain with last pax sprinting to front all the way up.

Once on top, take the stairs back down to level 4.

Burpee broad jump the short side of level 4, then bear crawl the long way.

Head back up the mountain, with quadraphilia on the inclines and sprints on the straight aways, all OYO.

Circle up on the top for a mental test. The Q has the pax recall their number, then combines the numbers in some fashion for SSH. The instructions are clear: execute SSH IC up to the first number followed by SSH in silence and completing together, with the Q being the cadence to follow. Failure to follow instructions results in a penalty.
    Spoiler alert: there were penalties.
    Penalty 1 – Heisenberg Seal burpees x 10 (burpee with 2 Merkins)
    Penalty 2 – Heisenberg Seal burpees x 15
Penalty 3 – Sprint to far wall and back and do 10 burpees.
The 4th time the Pax got it, sort of.
Time for one set of Tin Snips IC x 20.

Return to the flag for COT

    NMM

    – YHC hasn’t done WPM in a while, and wow! What a rockin’ AO!
    – The uptown crowd was surprisingly quiet today, minimal Mumblechatter going on.
    – There’s a rumor going around about doing burpees even if the pax were in perfect sync. I cannot confirm nor deny this rumor, except to encourage the pax to continue to reach for perfection.
    – Coffeteria was awesome and well attended.
    – Thanks for allowing me to be part of such an incredible group of men, and for gifting me the opportunity to lead.

  • Mothership with Frac – from Fracsac

14 Pax made a choice to take the DRP on their journey to get right and posted to The Mothership to see what YHC had on the beat down menu. With a shovel flag planted, disclaimer was given, then:

Mosey over to the Great Lawn and circle up on the grass for a warmup:

    SSH IC x 31
    Abe Vigodas x 10
    Grass Grabbers x 10
Bat wings AC, SC, OH, MNC, Chinooks
    Self love x 10

Cones were already set up like a basketball court for the first item on the menu:

    Bear crawl burpee suicides
Bear crawl from baseline to quarter line, 5 burpees and bear crawl back.
Bear crawl from baseline to half court, 5 burpees and bear crawl back.
Bear crawl from baseline to three quarters line, 5 burpees and bear crawl back.
Bear crawl full court, 5 burpees and bear crawl back.

    Next up, Embrace the Suck

Circle up and do the following AMRAP for 3 minutes:
    Jump squat x 7
    Merkin x 7
    LBC x 7

    Four corners:

    Corner 1 – Catalina Wine Mixers IC x 10
    Corner 2 – Sister Mary Katherine IC x 15
    Corner 3 – 8 count Body builders IC x 12
    Corner 4 – Bobby Hurleys x 20

Mosey across bridge behind Cafe Du Monde to the rarely visited area of the park.

    Circle up for Merkin Wave:

All pax in plank position, first person does one merkin, then the next person to the right does a merkin, looked like a wave flowing around the circle, until we got back to the first person who then performed 2 merkins, repeated all the way up to 10.

EMOM x 5 minutes of Burpees just because!

Finish off with a little Mary.

Mosey back to flag for COT with last 2 minutes of stretching.

    – YHC was happy to take the Mothership and try a couple new things.
    – City Park cleanup followed with Coffeteria at Cafe Navarre
    – The heat and humidity are back, drink lots of water!

  • Fear and Self-Loathing in El Diablo – from Bolt

After a cold-induced break and a quick trip out of town, nine days lapsed between posts so yours truly was full of self-loathing and fearful of phoning in the Q. Hopefully the PAX didn’t feel that way after I decided to try out an idea I’ve been toying with: a Yin/Yang themed workout taking advantage of the universal truth of equal and opposing forces that keep all things in balance.

Mosey to rock pile, cue obligatory highly curated playlist (which began with the classic “Rapper’s Delight”) and warmup then carry a medium rock to the pavilion, grab some bench. YHC explained each round would consist of an exercise done as we always do (Yin version), followed by a modified version that incorporated doing it from an equal but opposite perspective (Yang version). After doing the first two exercises in cadence we switched to OYO for the designated reps on the Yin and IC for the Yang.

Warmup IC: SSH, arm circles forward/back, tclaps, seal claps, Moroccan night clubs, self love (all 20x); Toy soldiers, Hillbillies (15x)

    YIN-YANG:
Squats(rock)/Yang (no rock): hold bottom of squat for 3 count and push ground away, squeeze glutes at top for each rep

Merkins/Yang: hold mission impossible for 3 count and extend arms with plank jack at top for each rep

Reverse lunges R/Yang: hold left leg at 90 degrees/R leg full reverse lunge with tall torso for 3 count, stand up and touch L elbow-R knee

Derkins/Yang: one derkin to Peter Parker to derkin for each rep

Reverse lunges L: hold right leg at 90 degrees/L leg full reverse lunge with tall torso for 3 count, stand up and touch R elbow-L knee

Irkins/Yang: one irkin to Parker Peter to irkin for each rep

Side lunges R then L: focus on driving through lunged heel, “pushing Earth away from you” on the up

Diamond merkins/Yang: diamond mission impossible for 3 count, extend arms with shoulder taps at top

Return rocks to pile, mosey to flag for COT, etc., welcoming FNG>Satchmo who happens to be my 17yo. Thanks, men, for joining me in the gloom and hope you enjoyed the suck as much as I enjoyed the Q. Until next time…

  • A Few of My Favorite Things – from Fracsac

Unable to join Hawgcycle for his mid year 10k a day milestone, YHC did the next best thing and took the Q at El Diablo.

With the shovel flag planted, a disclaimer was given, then start with a lap on the track, which was sort of a tribute to Hawg.

    Warmup

    SSH IC x 31
    Grass Grabbers IC x 12
Arm circles IC x 15 both directions
    Peter Parkers IC x 20

YHC had cones set up at the goal line and the 50 yard line.
Starting at the goal line, burpee broad jump to the 50 yard line.
Catalina Wine Mixers IC x 10
Bear crawl back to the goal line.

Next up was an exercise in breaking things down….

Deconstructed Burpees! Do the following IC:
    Squat IC x 10
    Squat Thrust IC x 10
    Merkin IC x 10
    Squat Thrust IC x 10
    Squat IC x 10
    OH clap IC x 10

    Squat IC x 9
    Squat Thrust IC x 9
    Merkin IC x 9
    Squat Thrust IC x 9
    Squat IC x 9
    OH clap IC x 9

Continue down to 1 of each! Then put them all together and do 10 Burpees OYO!

Now that the Pax has been introduced to YHC’s favorite things, time to put them together with 11’s:

Starting at goal line 1 Catalina Wine Mixer, then run to 50 yard line for 10 burpees.
Continue until 10 Catalina Wine Mixers and 1 Burpee.

    Return to flag for COT

    – The grass was surprisingly overgrown on the field, perhaps making the mosquitos worse. It just added to the overall suck….
    – Due to time constraints, the bear crawls were omitted from the 11’s. That’s the only thing that would have made it worse. Catalina Wine Mixers and Burpees in 11’s? Who is crazy enough to do that?
    – We lifted the troops in the COT, especially the 156 and 256.
    – We prayed for Landing Strip’s Father as he goes into surgery this morning.

Thanks for posting with me today.

  • WF3Q: all the hits, all the time – from Bolt

This early morning radio show included classics by artists such as Ludacris, Kenny Chesney, Darude, and Survivor, so basically a playlist created by a total nut job.

Guest appearances by WB Pax (Frozone and Short Bus—thank you!) that’s what happens when cocktail-ing with Mahatma…

Warmup IC: SSH, arm circles forward/back, tclaps, seal claps, Moroccan night clubs, self love (all 15x); Toy soldiers, IW, hillbilly squats (15x)

Mosey to bleachers for dry docks up the bleachers, increasing by one rep each row except top one for 10 reps. Tricep dips down the bleachers staring with 10 reps, decreasing by one each row.

Mosey, grab rocks, carry to parking lot and place pairs of rocks at each tree. Pair up for 5 rock station circuits (10 reps each) plus bonus track (Deca-die of pain): Squat , OH press, Curls, Lying press, tricep press. 3 rounds, moving between stations differently each round: mosey, reverse crab walk, bear crawls. Fracsac, ever the masochist, rolled out first deca-die after which we had to perform the move/count it landed on.

Return to rock pike and circle up for Mary, Pax choice/lead in cadence. Return to flag for COT; thanks men for showing up and allowing me to lead!

  • Joyful June 21st at The View – from Rudy

Short detour as I got lost on my way to The View (but at least now I know how to get to Westward Ho for a future visit). But fortunately, I’d left my house early enough just to cover that possibility. At 5:29, YHC and the Old View Reliables (and yes, I mean Old) started off in the humid gloom (though I will say – the weather on the other side of the levee was delightful!)

Grab a cinderblock and rifle carry to the top of the levee, our home for the next 45 minutes.

Warmup with some stretching, SSH, IW, etc… Then lets get started

6/21 – Happy June 21st. 6 Burpee variants at top of the levee, then carry the coupon down to the bottom for 21 reps. 3 rounds, each with 3 sets. Burpees/Curls, 8-Counts/Rows and ManMakers/Chest Presses.

Partner up: 1 pax take the 2 cinder blocks for a farmer carry down the levee and back up, while the partner does burpees. Repeat x3.

Now for something new: YHC has been seeing PT for hip problem. Apparently, YHC has the worlds weakest right Gluteus Medius. That’s led to lots of homework for YHC with Gluteus Activationus. Lets try it out with some PAX.

Bridges: Heels only (toes let the Quads do some of the work). Shake your hammies to make sure they lose (don’t want them doing the work). PINCH those Glutes. That’s it. Hold it. Hold it. ACTIVATING GLUTES. Then rest. Then Up again. Repeat x8 – each hold for around 10 seconds. Then with the glutes sufficiently activated, lets try some sllllooooow squat, holding at the the bottom. AND FOCUS ON FORM. Sit, don’t lean. Hold the core tight. Let the glutes do the work. Then lets do a lunge walk for a bit. Then some more squats. Don’t know about the other PAX, but my butt muscles were feeling it. (and on the positive side – hip pain has decreased greatly in the 4 weeks that I’ve been doing this…)

Rifle carry coupons back down, and circle up for a final round of LBCs at the flag.

Count-off/name-o-rama for 4 geriatric PAX (Hate for the youngster of the group, Frac, at a child-like 51…). Prayers – especially for my Mom who is still trying to adjust to life on her own. Father’s Day was a tough day for her yesterday. Thanks for the kind words, guys!
